the PJs of the world end up working in fortune 500 companies and making their family proud. The movie ends on a good note for Goof because it's still a kids movie and they have to appease children and can't get too dark. The decision on the part of the directors to include the Pete exchange was a clear showing that there is something wrong with Goofy's parenting. His love is good, but if his kid doesn't respect him, his kid will walk all over him. Giving someone a hug after they make a mistake and need comforting is meaningless if they will constantly turn around and spit in your face the next day.

You're oversimplifying things. Parent-child relationships are complex and come in more than just two ways. Also, kids like PJ will end up being bitter people with no character that only got to where they are through some form of nepotism or overly paid education. The moral in the movie really was that there needs to be a balance of love and punishment.

Respect is not everything. I know tons of stories where the child ended up cutting his ties from his shitty father or simply never developed a care to him. Respect made only with punishment is not a true relationship and will end up making your child never actually care about you.

Respect and love are equally important in a parent-child relationship.
