If you watch BvS, during the Doomsday fight, Superman looks like he's about to ice breath, and then he hears Lois screaming for help and flies off to save her

So... has there ever been an actual explanation of the mechanics of why Supes can fly?

Originally, Superman just jumped really high. And then I believe it was the first television show that made it so that he can go places by getting a running start and leaping forward, basically a one way trip. And then those cartoons basically gave him the ability to fly because it was more convenient, and the comics adopted that.

They did try to give explanations for his flight ability. When they introduced Superboy, they gave him "tactile telekinesis" as a way to explain certain inconsistencies in regards to Superman's power, and flight was one of them. He flied via limited telepathy. But since then they quietly phased that explanation out so. He just flies. And that's it.

Incidentally, his heat vision is basically just him expelling the solar energy stored in his cells through his eyes.
