Dunno if we've had one recently. Apologies if so. Got a new phone so I can show my GN's in all their glory as opposed to doing them shelf by shelf. Bit messy but damn that's a good collection even if I do say so myself....
>>
>>92639658
finally (was too lazy to make one myself)
got Legionnaires Book 1 now, it's pretty thick.
Would post shelf but it looks like shit right now because I'm reading some of the big books so everything else fell over.
>>

Also got these this week...Crickets and The Blood of the Virgin arc keeps going from strength to strength, Harkham is at the top of his game, it's the best small press floppy out at the moment, he's as good as Jaime now. Literally at the top of his craft. There are some jaw-dropping sequences in the new ish where he shows so much with so little...just astounding work. I got two copies so might storytime if anyone's interested

Sorry, your comment came through as mine was posting--yup, it's mine. Cheers /co/mrade (Captain Easy Sundays vol2 and Kramers 7 not shown because they won't fit, finally got two brackets for a new shelf, gonna put it up tonight, all those books on their sides look messy af)

To lazy to grab my camera

Bought Bodycount by Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley, it's a TMNT comic published by Image and collected by Heavy Metal. It was alright, for the 90's it felt like Bisley wasn't giving it his all

Also all three issues of Monkeyman and O'Brien, Arthur Adams' Dark Horse comic.

Been on a print buying spree lately. Just got a print from Ichabod the Optimistic Canine and Stupidfox. Still waiting on my Nucleus and Andy Price orders. The latter is getting annoying since it's going on two weeks now. Things I've ordered after it have already arrived.

I need to stop because it seems like I find a new favorite artist every day. Just emailed Meg Park to see if she had any prints from Alver available. Also found an artbook from something called Fonky Poulp. A bit of research showed me it was a submission at Real Time Film Festival. Anyone have any idea where I can find it to watch?
>>
>>92640394
And anyone here buy children's books as art books? Haven't bought anything from him yet, but I love Jon Klassen's style. I'm planning on buying this print in my next batch.
>>
Feels like we've had less of these threads lately, prolly because of SJ

I haven't bought anything recently but just put in an order for the new DC collections of Ostrander and company's WASTELAND, and Wolfman and Colan's NIGHT FORCE

>>
>>92640546
Thanks, I'm waiting on the Mall print and this one by Teagan White right now. Not really /co/ I guess since as far as I know, most of these people are just artists. Are picture books /co/ or /lit/ anyway? Might see if I can get a thread going later on.
>>

It also looks like DC pulled the pre-order for Jack Kirby's Kamandi omnibus off Amazon

They've all been reprinted but even those are selling fast...Harkham has gotten insanely good, the difference between the Everything Together collection and the Blood of the Virgin arc from crickets 3-6 is like night and day...I always liked his work but now he's one of my favourite cartoonists. Glad you dig pretending is lying, half way through it, all the different visual styles are very effective.

Still got these on the to read pile (apart from Flintstones) so they're unshelved, Black Rat is avant-garde to fuck, completely different from Little Tommy Lost (which I fucking LOVE) and Ron rege's What Parsifal Saw is very, very good

>>
>>92647545
I've had that happen before. I order from them often, and they clearly have a very particular processing routine. I've found that if I order ASAP on Tuesday when new releases come out, and the order doesn't contain anything out of stock, there's a high chance I'll have it by Thursday. I've ordered out-of-stock items three times, and each time it happened exactly how you described.

It has a ton of artists: Bilal, Michael Dorey, Arthur Suydam, John Howe, Val Mayerik, Nicollet, E.E. Davis, Barbe, Azpiri, Alberto Breccia, Juan Gimenez, Sicomoro, Schuiten, Horacio Altuna, Petillon, Voss, Zoran, Dick Matena, John Workman, Nino, Preiss, Arno, Pepe Moreno, Alias, Caza, Chichoni, & Richard Corben.
Most of the stories are a couple of pages long. I'm unfamiliar with most of them, but I'll definitely be looking into some of the authors.

>>
>>92649269
Yes, definitely. He's blowing jaime out the fucking water as far as the alt scene goes. There's an announcement in the back of #6 that they're all back in print, I mean I have 1 and 2, the D& Q issues with the Black Death story (which is good) but 3-6 are indispensable . I'm after the Julie Doucet 365 book, if you have that I'll swap you it for a first printing of Crickets 4! (They've all gone into second printings now, I bought two copies of 3, 4 and 6 when they came out, the first prints I mean, and sold my second copy of #3 for £140 on ebay, believe it or not, this was before they were reprinted.)

I personally liked it. Changed origin to be Judas (yet another answer for Phantom Stranger's multiple choice)
I remember there's this moment where (spoiler) he gives his chain of silver coins to one of the sons of Trigon, and they spend a page watching that demon slowly get engulfed in the guilt that Stranger walks with daily.

>>92659104
for 2-5 bucks there's no loss at all. Even if you only enjoy half of them and the other half you end up throwing away it's a good deal. You go to a library you can easily end up with the same in late charges if you are me and forget easily (cause I take out 10 books at a time). And as a bonus you can sometime run into hidden gems that you would look past most of the time
>>

/a/ keeps deleting tyreads when I try to show it to them so maybe I can show it off here.

Possibly the least manga type manga I've ever seen.

Writer from NY, artist from The Philippines, printed in Canada, story is a Lovecraftian horror involving an LA teen in New England.
Still reads right to left, sold in the manga section of bookstores, and published through the company that published the Afro Samurai manga and other things.

I bought it out of pure curiosity alone, still need to actually bother to see if it is any good to read.

How much come in library editions?
Like is it Absolutes and it's an oversized version of a average sized trade? Or is it more like an more tall than fat omnibus that prolly equals 3-5 trades worth?
>>
>>92661230
Hellboy Library Editions have two trades each.
>>
>>92661230

Depends really - there's a little variation in Absolutes, for a start. For example, the All Star Superman just has those 12 issues and some added features, while the Top Ten has Vols 1 & 2, and the Smax and Forty-Niners series all in one book.

Depends on the series, but most of them have 2-5 trades, and they're basically the Dark Horse equivalent of a DC Absolute. Nicely bound, extra bits, oversized. No slipcovers though, and I can't speak for other companies...

the problem with Annihilation is that it largely relies on properties that belong to the Fantastic Four intellectual property:
Skrulls, Silver Surfer, Galactus, Blastaar, Annihilus...
You know Disney, they don't want to further develop it if they don't have all the rights to it.
>>
>>92660965
How's top 10?
>>
>>92662666
Don't they still own the toy and cartoon rights and still profit plenty?
>>
>>92663552
yes but not as much as with the movie rights, shit shifted nowadays. I still haven't seen a single GoTG kids toy that an actual kid played with/carried around, have you? it's just not marketable enough, while anything "Marvel" related is a sure bet blockbuster in cinemas with a huge profit margin for Disney, plus the following DVD/BluRay sales.
The "you get the ticket sales, I get the merchandising rights" equation Lucas pulled off in the 70s doesn't really work any more.

Great collection. Really need a copy of Hot Potatoe, Marc Bell's complete Shrimpy & Paul collection (the Highwater Comics edition, long OOP now, next to Pure Pajamas in my pic) is still one of my favourite comics ever (and I had the chance to tell Tom Devlin when he was a guest at Thought Bubble--really nice bloke). Wouldn't mind The Neat Stuff collection either, I love the Studs Kirby comics.

not at all, looks like a good variety. It was to help push it over but I read >>92665616 and the joke doesn't land.

I'm going to be making myself a bookshelf this summer. Thinking of what to do about floppies. There is the boring bottom drawer pull out but I want to maximize front facing room. So I was thinking of having the drawers pull out the side of the bookshelf and still have room for my softcover novels in front of that to hide the drawer. Only drawback is that it would limit where I can put it when I move. I should probably KISS but I have a bad habit of over complicating things.

Anyone else build their own bookshelfs?

I got it as a gift and don't think I even got halfway through it. Not a series for me. Too unrelentingly grim. You need some levity when you go dark or it just becomes a chore to slog through.
>>
>>92663399

It's good! The sheer amount of detail that's gone into some of the backgrounds, they're all filled with obscure superheroes from the Golden Age and references to things no-one but Moore must remember. Solid story as well.
>>
>>92667972
Not the one you're replying to, but I'm assuming it is because the one you're replying to liked it, but never saw anyone promote it beyond that image of a guy buying the whole run.

People'll talk about Demon Knight or Penguin or All Star Western or Animal Man or whatever like they're the hidden gems that people overlooked and had short lived success.
And Phantom Stranger is in that boat too, with even fewer talking about it somehow.

If ya didn't care for it, it looks like the niche of the niche.
If ya cared for it, it is prolly viewed as the most underrated thing from N52.

Not the guy you asked, but Alpha Flight is an okay purchase if you like Byrne.

The stuff in between X-Men #140 and Alpha Flight #1 is okay at best, needless at worst. A lot of the backgrounds are lazy, and there's some issues that you can tell Byrne was writing/penciling too many things at a time, but it's entertaining, and he's not screwing up characters that he didn't create in the first place. Byrne does actually shine when he's either writing blank-slate characters or his own creations.
Be prepared for seeing a Canadian dwarf get very blatantly pushed as "the next Wolverine" and having it not go as intended, though Puck was a cool character in most cases.

Quick question. I'm planning on getting some ms marvel collections but i'm not sure if I should go with the omnibus or the HC's. I know marvel has a bad habit of only releasing the first omnibus and I hate ending up with an omni that never continues. Though omnibusses would save me some money.
Also, what would simply look better on a shelf?
>>
>>92689947
Ah yeah I think I got Excorcism in some tiny graphic novels from a used book store.
Where there's a fat Cajun black woman who can see ghosts and Deadman has been left to himself and gone CRRRAAAAZZYYYY.
>>
>>92696716
You more worried about them not matching or you missing issues?
>>
>>92696776
omni collects hc1 & 2 so missing issues probably won't be a problem
>>
>>92665723

Its good, but only if you're into what it is... if that makes sense.
>>
>>92696716

Omnis are heavy as fuck and only a reasonable option if you want shelf porn of something you've already read, or only read at home at a desk or table or something like that.

The value tradeoff with omnis is that theyre one giant as fuck book. Personally I'd go with the HC's
>>
>>92696941

Oh you meant Kamala ms.marvel that makes more sense i couldn't think of a early one with Carol...

just get the omni its not even really an omni just a double thick hc, Marvel has a habit lately of calling those little things "omnis"
>>
>>92696716
omnis any time. they're best bang for your bucks and you have to be retarded if you are unable to wield a heavy book, either put it on a desk or read it in bed by, you know, sitting cross-legged in it and having the book in your lap. bonus points for doing that on your favorite couch. the only problem comes if you don't have a proper desk-light.
>>
>>92698045
>they're best bang for your bucks
if you are paying full price maybe. But I rarely pay full price for trades. Just have to deal hunt and can find tons of good trades for $5. Got almost all the Robert Rodi Thor hardcovers for 5 each.
>>
>>92684798
Yeah, I wish all the Omnibuses were the size of the first Amazing Spider-Man and the Wolverine one. I haven't read the Alpha Flight Omni yet, but I've got a scattering of the singles from that run and I enjoyed them.
>>
>>92696716
The Ms Marvel (Kamala) omni isn't really that large. I'm hoping they'll release a second volume once they get enough issues.
>>
>>92682994
Sandman. Save up for the regular TP's or buy the omnibus books that will feature the Absolute versions recoloring. There's only one problem with the latter, and that the pages will pop off the spine.
As for the spin-off stories, I'd buy Endless Nights and Dream Hunters first. Skip the Death comic if you're purchasing the omnibus edition, cus it's just repackaging all the stories included with her plus bonus material and sketches.
>>
>>92698481

How are the DC Golden Age omnibuses? The hardcover ones, not the the softcover ones. Is the binding good/sturdy? Thinking about picking up the first Superman and maybe Wonder Woman ones, but I think sometimes DC's omnis are just too big/unwieldy and feel like they're going to break.

DC should really go with the thinner paper though. or do archive edition formats again.

Not sure whether to get that or not....

Forgot to say that Harkham IS putting out B.O.T.V. as a single collection when it's done, I think he's approximating another three parts, though. So, yes, get the Crickets floppies! I promise you won't regret it! He's making Clowes look like the aged fuck that he is (sorry, I love the guy but after Patience I'm completely Clowesed out, now), he makes Tomine and Seth just seem kind of boring, like I said only Jaime is really putting out regular comics to the same standard. Every cartoonist working in that broadly "arty", "realistic" literary type of genre, that kind of "Great American (Graphic) Novel" work is just completely fuckin' overshadowed by the last four Crickets comics. Ethan Rilly is getting there (in that same territory) but Harkham's growth as a cartoonist has been absolutely STUNNING since he started self-pubbing Crickets. You should be able to get the reprints from whatthingsdo.com--they have some wonderful Jordan Crane posters and other things too. Oh Crane is doing dope "realism" but the last Uptight had sci-fi and all sortsa shit in there, and Keeping Two is "literary realism" but he's just keeping apace with Harkham. Sorry for the rant...!

Savage Sword of Conan is Black and White and was the "adult" one (it was a bit more bloody than the colored ones), the Chronicles of Conan were the regular colored ones which ran until the late 80s I think. Roy Thomas basically wrote the most successful runs of them throughout (that is, actually he wrote the overwhelming part of the whole, but most of the well known stories are based off the original Robert E. Howard pulp stories, which are very much recommended reading by itself, his prose is superb and you totally feel "in it") Both of them are licensed by Dark Horse but some of them are already OOP and hard to find, if you know how to get a complete run, go for it (though you'd still easily pay 400 bucks since it's so much and you better have the shelf space). after that they ran a lot of minis (they followed each other and sometimes built on each other though) until Marvel finally canned any kind of Conan in the late 90s (besides it got really shallow) and the license moved to Dark Horse completely.
Dark Horse revived the title under Busiek in 2004, it is a much much bloodier version and the whole thing is a bit modernized, but they are on par with the old ones and more accessible for a younger audience, since the old comics (since they are silver/bronze age with lots and lots of text and exposition) may feel a bit dated for current readers.

Long version short: If you like lots of exposition, pick up the old ones, if you like it bloody, pick the new ones.
check over in the current win-o and the older ones, empire ripped the chronicles in HD (new batch should come this week)

NYRC is definitely putting out grand slam after grand slam. I haven't read Agony yet, but I have read Soft City. I really liked it. It has an amazing sense of scale. Some of the spreads look like they've been copy-pasted in order to have as many people/cars/whatever as there are, but you can see variations in many of the individual pieces that show they were all hand drawn. Really impressive stuff.

I bought Crickets 3 & 4 today as well. Looking forward to reading them.

>DC should really go with the thinner paper though

uh, no.... they shouldn't thats what Marvel "the electric jew" does.
>>
>>92703267
it's not about the price, it's about the fact that the thick volumes DC currently puts out are under serious risk of breaking apart. my Green Lantern by Geoff Johns vol 2 broke apart on its own weight and I had to glue it back as best I could but still rather poorly. I doubt that'll ever happen with any of my Fantastic Four omnis or my Annihilation Conquest one.
>>
Awwh, nice one, Anon! You'll fuckin' love 'em! If this thread is still alive when you've read 3, please tell me what you think of, I dunno, the sequence with Seymour in the editing suite, all draped in film?! That part is masterful..heck the whole BOTV arc is just a tour-de-force...as a wanna be cartoonist myself I've been buying two copies so I can have one to study, each issue is a fuckin' masterclass, Harkham can do so much with just a talking heads scene for instance...and I'm in love with his drawing , overall design and page breakdowns...I really think BOTV will be taught when it's published in one volume. I storytimed 4 when it came out, the shooting on set issue, Joy is such a bloody great character, there's something so guileless and even a little naive abut her...I'm kind f jealous you getting to experience it fresh and new! You had a flick through? And have you ever seen Harkham's illo's for the Bonnie Prince Billy records? Wonderful stuff. Do you get Kramers as well? Oh, and where didja get the Crickets issues from if you don't mind me asking mate? Ya LCS (great shop if so!)? I am actually buzzing for you, man...compare the BOTV stuff to Poor Sailor or the D&Q stuff, the difference is staggering...as I said Crickets 3 was when I started to LOVE Harkham's work--well, actually the Kramers 6 Jewish manuscript illustrator story was when I started to really take notice but he stole my comics heart with Crickets 3...oh and the cover which echoes a scene from the party is a disturbing little sequence (from #3)...sorry again,I just wanna spread the word to /co/ about Crickets, man...

Agony is wicked, I've always loved Beyer, he's like, I dunno, the Klee of comics...guy's a legend, really. Wouldja recommend Soft City, then? I love that cover and what I've seen of the comic--there-s a kind of "playful" oppressiveness to those cityscapes and traffic jams I find fascinating. Not to mention the somewhat brisk,dashed-off nature of the art. (Cont.)...
>>
>>92703139
...(Continued) the first comic that came to mind when I saw Soft City was Travel by Yokoyama, d'ya think there's anything in that comparison or is it purely superficial? And who was Pushwagner again?, some sorta pop artist who dabbled in comics? or has he done more sequential narrative? I read the TCJ review (actually I think they reviewed it TWICE) and I was taken by the art...is that really what it is, a showcase for Pushwagner? Or is there a deeper narrative/theme at play?

I've not bought anything /co/-related in a bit, but finally broke down and bought a copy of Udon's Darkstalkers Ultimate Collection based on the recommendation of a few /co/mrades in the Street Fighter vs Darkstalkers storytime thread. The book is huge for a paperback, only slightly smaller than the Blacksad: Amarillo hardcover I've got, and they absolutely were not kidding about the crappy binding. Amazon sent a replacement after the first arrived with the top of the spine banged in and then it fell apart when I tried to read it while waiting for the new one. New one came today and, though in perfect shape, separated from the spine just from a cursory 30-second flip through. I reported this to Amazon to let them know that their stock was defective and they just said not to worry, they'd send a third copy that surely wouldn't fall apart like the first two and have me mail the defective ones back. I even emailed Udon to suggest they try a different binding method and they basically told me that it's an older book gone OOP and the binding's probably reached it's age limit by now, so they can't do anything but offer me a complimentary copy of SF vs DS #0 so that I might pick up their new series.

Well, hot damn. I might finally have to check out some Devilman. Now if only we could get some of Ishinomori's stuff out there too. I'd love for collections of Kamen Rider manga series to hit the U.S.

On a manga/Rider-related note, I got a nifty surprise in the mail earlier this week. I've really gotten into Kamen Rider Amazon recently, so much so that I'd possilby call it my favorite among the Showa series so far, and ordered WCF figures for Amazon and the Mole Beastman as a set "with bonus gift". Turns out that bonus gift is a trade collection of the Amazon manga with a retrospective/making of for Ishinomori's original Kamen Rider manga.

Mixtape in name only, it's a single with an A-side original recording by Gerard Way inspired by Cave Carson, and a B-side highlight from a fictional Cave Carson audio documentary

It's clearly an attempt to introduce Way's musical fans into comics, as the 'Mixtape' issue itself is just a sampler of the line with a new intro drawn by Mike Allred

The casette was given away as a promo to anyone who attended the YA panel at NYCC 16

Actually it does work, since that's what I did (I skipped out on Batman '66, Wonder Woman '77 and Bombshells though but just for completionist's sake I'll probably put those in, too). And I didn't stop there: I sorted everything by release week, renamed everything so that I can actually properly look at it without my autism kicking in (turned all .cbzs into .cbrs since I hate cbzs for some reason, removed all scanner/ripper names, looked through all files and removed backpages, ads and resized double pages if they were too small) and duplicated all crossover files into a separate crossover folder so that I could properly put the files into crossover-order.
