I feel like "plot device" is used almost exclusively for nice characters, namely girls, who serve as love interests. That's the only context I've heard it used here, namely with Wendy and now Jackie.

It's pretty much a meme at this point.

Because no matter how true it is, I never see anyone using "plot device" for any other different type of character. They always have to be tied to romance, which is clearly a factor in just how liberally the "plot device" moniker is used for characters like Wendy and Jackie.

There are tons of others that can be considered plot devices that are never called out as such.

I liked how ready and truly excited she was to share her passion with Marco in this scene. It was a brief shining moment that solidified making her feel like a person in my mind for some reason.
I honestly will feel bad if she gets screwed out of a place in the show.

because love interests are low hanging fruit, they are so much easier to point out, and are the ones that actually get people riled up

spear carriers are not gonna get your goat, since we only see them for a short while, and you wont have as much of a personal attachment to them
