I just finished bloodlines, and I had this whole thing written up but it got lost so here's a much shortened version.

I'm sad that Ransolm got his irony within an irony death, and I thought the bit where Leia feels an urge to kill innocents in order to save someone also suddenly giving her realization that maybe Darth Vader's initial cause was to protect someone or to avenge some great wrong, and that she, even a little, understood what Luke meant by that Darth Vader had good in him.

And Carise's comeuppance being a little bit petty I thought was a perfect consequence for a character whose ambitions were very vain and I suppose petty in and of themselves, and that the fact that Carise thought being stripped of title was an awful humiliating experience makes the punishment fairly appropriate.

I wonder if in the new canon if Leia will ever learn the full story about her parents.

Personally my issue was that it WOULD have been a great capper to Ezra's arc in season 3, if he'd actually had one. He starts off very Dark Side, then just sort of stops for very little reason, its kind of jarring to tell the truth. I think that's kind of the issue- it should have been either have Ezra be more involved or not involved at all. As it is he barely has anything to do with the episode's story, he's a completely passive participant who was lured there by Maul to lure Obi-Wan out, then leaves because his part is done.

Which is fair enough but that means we still wasted a significant amount of the episode on Ezra fucking around in the desert.

So I went through my copy of Rogue Planet to suss out some details of the jedi order and they gave a few numbers about how much money the jedi make. That is to say, the jedi should have an annual discretionary budget of about 100 million credits. The most expensive missions, which are the kind Obi-Wan and Anakin go on in the book, use about three million and the numbers they pitch around make that seem like a whole lot.

Obviously though the exchange rate isn't perfect. Some things are much cheaper than their real life equivalent, while others are far more expensive.

The Saga edition rulebook lists a liter of water as being one credit. Which is a decent guideline since that's an objective good rather than sci fi tech or made of foreign materials. Doing a bit of rounding and going by averages that costs about 4.60. Which is more or less what a bottle of Smart Water or Fiji comes to in that amount. Meaning that one credit is worth about 4.6 US dollars.

Ergo, the jedi somehow protect the galaxy on a budget of about 460,000,000 dollars a year when there's no war on. The book makes it clear the jedi can't be everywhere and trade routes are increasingly unstable, but that's the number I've been able to suss out for somewhere between TPM and AOTC.

Rogue Planet does make it obvious that the jedi don't normally spend that much though. The Jedi don't actually have many private vehicles at this point and mostly just bum rides of any republic or third party ships passing through. They mostly just use their lightsabers and a small amount of secondary tools. The average jedi doesn't actually do much fieldwork since early apprenticeships and Padawans spend most of their time in the archives or training rooms. It took Anakin like three years to actually go on a jedi mission.

I look at these covers and I think of the first stanza of this poem, The Second Coming, by Yeats:

The widening gyre part interests me the most, the idea of society collapsing in on itself, with the metaphor of the falcon unable to hear the falconer. An idea of loss of communication, a directionless continuation of culture without any real substance. It's impossible for society to become transcendent or for true art to be created without cause or reason.

I look at the eyes of these people on the covers and they speak volumes. No real emotion. A cynical expression, perhaps, 'acting'. A frown. A slight grin. A snarl. But in their eyes they lack any conviction, any substance, any direction. They are in the movie because they are in the movie, because its a Star Wars movie and Star Wars movie's are things that happen. Events that occur, but are devoid of any true reason beyond their own existence. Just drifting for the sake of drifting. Thoughtless and weak.

A spinning gyre collapsing in on itself. A falcon drifting in the wind. It's like looking at the opposite of art. Or not even that, the absence of art. The absence of direction. Do I care about Kylo Ren? Fin? Poe or Rey? No, I feel complete ambivalence towards them. I am absent of care or hatred or lust or anger. Nothing. And I don't think that anyone who made this film really cared about the characters either.

I see photos of people standing in a studio, all pretending to be invested in something inherently emotionally detached and dishonest.

I think you're reading too far into or misdirecting your thoughts towards Vanity Fair's style of photography, because this looks like a fairly run of the mill style for fashion photography which isn't an inappropriate playbook to take from given that revealing what these characters look like is a big part of these covers, and either way from an artistic standpoint this stands head and shoulders above the stuff that you'll be seeing on the covers of Empire and Entertainment Weekly.

Star Wars is great, but if you honestly believe that it ever aspired to the level of "art" that you're soliloquizing about the state of then you're deluding yourself.

Look into what Lucas says about morality, spirituality - there's more to Star Wars than meets the eye, but beyond that - the point I was trying to make was that SW had purpose beyond just existing as a film and beyond just telling the story of some characters, it had a reason to exist and was created by a man with vision. These films exist to serve themselves, and lack any reason beyond that.
