Yeah, you're right. The problem is Ashi's death comes off like a comedy, rather than a dramatic and tragic moment.

I'm all for compression, and cutting out the unnecessary parts when editing, but there are times when things need to breath. Otherwise, you get that tone deaf death.

Jack saved his past but he also saved the future, making all friends he knew to get a better life in the good future.
Ashi was the last price to pay, for finally completing it.
in fact Ashi sacrified her own existence to allow it and make Jack happy, she was really his true love and stay with him to the end.

I don't even like Ashi, but this was a dumb way to send her off. All of that character building and she just suddenly dies at the end. It's not even a heroic sacrifice where she chooses to die to save Jack. Just "Oops, I guess I kinda fucked myself. Peace bro."

You don't even need to kill her to make a bittersweet ending. All you have to do is
