Masters of the Universe

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 336
Thread images: 223

Since the last thread got bumped off the board by the 25 plus Samuari Jack threads currently on the board. I had more art to post and now art in need of reposting as well so let's do this.

Also we need an 80s shared universe something or other complete with Masters of the Universe, Thundercats, Rock Lords, Sectuars (for extra-planetary Fantasy/Sci-Fi Barbarianism) and Dinosaucers, COPS, Gobots, Centurions (for Earth based adventures) and Galaxy Rangers, Silverhawks, Bravestarr and Dino-Riders (for Cosmic shit). Fuck it, anything not owned by Hasbro just throw it in there.

It's a shame this franchise only has a fanbase of insane reactionary men and women in their 40s and 50s who declare anything done after 1987 to be heresy. Or sometimes anything after 1985.

How someone can still idolize the Filmation cartoon is beyond me.
>>
>>
>>92604576
The funny thing is that Filmation is the worst MOTU series ever. It completely destroyed the entire building of an alien post apocalyptic turned to a Sword & Sorcery world, that came before, with the mini comics, the box art and the first comics. The 2002 animated series was by far superior from the Filmation cartoon. And the comics that released during the 2002-2004 and 2012-17 were great. Heck even the New Adventures is a better animated series than Filmation.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>92604683

Pretty much, but american children can't read and only grew up watching shitty cartoons so that's the only version they accept.

Filmation has some good episodes, but the percentage of good to bad is abysmal because they shat out like 140 fucking episodes of the show with the same reused backgrounds, animation and music. Over and over and over again.

And people still say they love it.

The filmation series was great and still is a good show without pink glasses.
But you are right they are too nerdy if they dont take anythin past 2000 as addition.
>>
>>92604745
This.

Filmation had maximum 10 decent episodes (Shokoti, Dragon's Gift, the Sorceress's Origin and few others). But this doesn't mean we should oversee how bad the rest it was.

The best parts of MOTU are the Alcala/Glut minic comics, the 2002 animated series, and the modern comics from 2002 and afterwards.
>>
>>
>>92604785
>The filmation series was great and still is a good show without pink glasses.

It really isn't, even compared to contemporary toy merchandise shows. Filmation was exactly like Hanna Barbera, a company filled with penny-pinching jews dedicated to showering the marketplace with inferior product and getting into syndication.

There's a reason that animation stars like Paul Dini who worked for them only have scatching remarks about the experience.

One word: Toys.

Mattel fucked up the marketing with a myriad of unwanted He-Man and Skeletor variants, and the action figure line failed. As a consequence the animated series had to ended soon.

It had consistently good ratings through both seasons but since the toys weren't selling Mattel decided not to go through with financing a third season. Toys which didn't sell, by the way, because Mattel famously fucked up distribution so shelves were only filled with crappy He-Man and Skeletor variants.

That's one aspect.

Immagine a world ravaged by wars between barbarians, wizards, warlords, gods, in order to gain controll of the greatest power in the universe. Immagine a world with snake men and goblins fighting not only with swords and axes but also with laser guns. Immagine a world where cyborg dinosaurs live side by side with dragons, giants and any kind of mythical creatures. Immagine having together the worlds created by Howard, Kirby, Burroughs, Tolkien, Lukas, Miller all in one. This is the Masters of the Universe.

If I remember correctly, He-Man's mother and Evil Lynn were astronauts from Earth and they crash-landed on Eternia. Evil Lynn used her knowledge of physics to become a powerful sorceress. He-Man's mom married the king of Eternia, gave birth to Adam and Adora and never did anything interesting ever again.

He-Man's mother Marlena is an Earth astronaut. But not Evil-Lyn. There was an intention in the first scripts, before the action figure or anything else came out, that she and Trap-Jaw where on board in the same spaceship with Marlena, but it was never became official canon. In the 80's media, Evil-Lyn was never explored, until the 2002 animated series revealed that she was an Eternian witch, daughter of the Faceless One (pic related), an ancient immortal wizard and lord of Zalesia an ancient Eternian city state, who fell in love with Keldor before he became Skeletor.

But MOTU's Thanos is Hordak (or maybe Horde Prime if you wanna go that route)

That;s the guy you build up, and then force He-Man and Skeletor to join forces.

That said though, if they made the movie with KELDOR and the build up was to him transforming into Skeletor, that could be GOAT. Especially if they built up Adam's transformation, and had the two mirror each other

The huge hardcover collection of the mini comics can be found less than $20 on Amazon. It's freaking magical and weird to see how the franchise morphed so much over such a relatively short amount of time.
Like everybody having a battle cat, Skelator being a multi-dimensional conqueror and living in Greyskull, Sorceress looking like Teela's toy and all that

Strangely, it makes sense for the skull faced man to live in the skull castle, while the snake themed people like Teela and early Sorceress lived in the snake themed one.

Having it take place on Eternia and not some suburb in Kentucky would be a huge improvement.

You think it would be easy, Eternia is 99% desert anyway so just take the cameras about 40 minutes outside LA and start filming out there with robot horses and monster people.
>>
>>92607807
Chris Pratt would play He-Man (complete with dance-offs & 80s references) and Skeletor would be played by Adam Sandler (since it is Sony), Will Ferral could play Man-At-Arms or Fisto and Jim Carey would provide the voice of Cringer while Peter Dinklage would play Orko and the movie would be a tongue-in-cheek comedy for the most part since the producers at Sony would be too terrified to take the source material seriously: "From the studio that brought you the Smurfs comes..."
>>
>>92607994
Jim Carey wouldn't be Orko?

Or also provide the voices for Two-Bad and Sinkor?
>>
>>92607994
>the movie would be a tongue-in-cheek comedy for the most part since the producers at Sony would be too terrified to take the source material seriously

All the rest of what you said aside, this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

MOTU is ridiculous already. And if it's played for laughs, that increases the chances of seeing Mekaneck and Snout Spout in the film.

That's what's great about MOTU, you can really go either way with it.

Of course, I do acknowledge that in practice, the humor would more likely come from typical drivel and nostalgia pandering rather than being genuinely clever. Which is a shame.
>>
>>92606851
There is not Thanos's MOTU. There is only the top dog. Hordak killed Horde Prime. Skeletor killed Hordak. Skeletor is the top dog of MOTU.
>>
>>92607633
Nope it's not. Skulls and snakes are just religious symbols in the MOTU mythos.

Have you ever seen the 2002 MOTU animated series?
Have you ever read any MOTU comics from 2002 and afterwards?
Do it and then we talk about what it's ridiculous.

But judging an entire franchise because of a couple of names is dumb. Or do you really believe that names like Captain America, Spiderman or Batman sound less ridiculous? Or isn't ridiculous the concept of crime fighters dressed like clowns in a modern city? At least the Eternians are aliens so the exotic and strange names make sense. The capeshit characters in Halloween customs what excuse they have? It's only because you are used to them, that you can't comprehend how ridiculous the capeshit is.

First off, it's not about just the names. If it was, I would have brought up Evil-Lyn, but I didn't because despite her retarded name, she has always been portrayed as a serious character

The guys I listed are a skunk man with the power to stink; an elephant headed fireman; a cowboy (in a sword and sorcery setting) full of shotguns; a froggy snakeman who licks you with a paralyzing tongue...that shit is all ridiculous in concept.

And second, why drag capeshit into it? I recognize capeshit is retarded. I would never ask for or expect an "epic serious" Spider-Man movie, because while Spidey can do serious stories, it would be shit to try and make it devoid of any fun or humor. And since the initial topic was live action adaptations, studios also recognize that fact, and that's why there has never been a completely serious cape movie. So why would I want a serious adaptation of He-Man?

I want it to embrace the absurdity, not brush it aside

It's not only Spiderman. It's Batman and any other capeshit character. But just try any Batman thread and tell them how ridiculous he is.

What you say as absurdity it's actually the testimony of a war ravaged world. Most of these characters that you suprficially consider the as ridiculous are actually battle hardened warriors that got injured seriously in battle. Mekaneck was badly injured in his neck, and he needed a cybernetic replacement. And any other MOTU characters like Rio Blast who was a galactic ranger tortured by the Horde at the point that he transformed to a cyborg. But apparently your knowledge about how deep the MOTU mythos is, it's poor, so there it's pointless to continue argue.

But the last cartoon was like 15-ish years ago so the youngest actual He-Man fan is on average around 20. Do you think a serious reboot aimed at a more mature audience could work?

Apart from a small hardcore base He-Man is a niche franchise known by few. Technically they can do an epic fantasy movie, since there are many MOTU canons, with a completely different tone the one from the other. For example all the canons from the 2002 animated series and afterwards including the comics are more serious high fantasy interepretations.

Give him a cool personality and play up his role as a soldier. Maybe give him enhanced sight and hearing to go along with his cybernetic neck.

Mekaneck is a good character. He was an Eternian soldier that was injured badly in the neck, so Man At Arms had to replace it with a mechanical neck apparatus. He is the Eternian warrior that he spies at the enemy's lines. He is one of He-Man's closest friends and when things with the Horde got tough, he was the only one who stand at his side.
>>
>>92615304
He had a bit of inferiority complex, something that Count Marzo got advanced from in the 2002 animated series, but he got over it at the end.

Also in the old cartoon Marzo kidnapped Mekaneck's son. Those two have a long time feud.

I feel like Skeletor needs some female mooks
And the Snakemen need some females period.

Like, look at the Horde. They got Shadow Weaver, yeah, but they also have Catra, Scorpia, Octavia, none of which are particularly brilliant or powerful, they're just soldiers.

Skeletor has Evil-Lyn, but he doesn't have lower level female henchmen, like girl equivalents to Beast Man or Clawful.

I'd like more of that. It seems like virtually every female villain can be summed up as "evil powerful witch."

I dunno I started watching the Filmation series yesterday and overall am finding it pretty enjoyable

but I do agree that the Mini-Comics are the best fiction, but I do feel that if we were to get a new series any time soon it needs to hit the right balance between serious and silly, something in tone similar to Batman The Brave & The Bold or Transformers Animated or Ben 10 Omniverse would probably be a good fit

>>92608901
yeah as I said above MOTU is a franchise where you need to acknowledge both the Ultra Serious and Cornball Silly aspects of the franchise, go too far in the former and it just feels fake & tryhard, too far in the latter and you can't do anything lasting with it

>>92619040
very true, heck the Masters/Heroic Warriors could use more female members as well, not really any besides Teela or The Sorceress, at least in the main continuities(I think MOTUC introduced one or two new ones, but it is still lacking)
>>
What kind of female characters would you like to see, thematically?
>>
>>92628908
The only good MOTU animated series is the 2002 one. The Failmation is garbage. The 2002 show is the one that brought Eternia in the right way, abbandoning the campy and corny elements, developing the characters, adding depth to the mythos. And of course the modern comics are very good, showing how MOTU works better as epic fantasy than a silly and dumb cartoon from the 80's

I agree with you all this Filmation vs. 200x is dumb. It seems that some are really autistic about their 200x to be superior.
For me it all has bad and good aspects. And it served different purposes and approaches.

>female
Isnt this what She-Ra is for?
I mean they could be used just as good as the Horde female characters.
>>
>>92632929
It's not autistic at all. It's simply facts. Filmation completely fucked up the original concept of Masters of the Universe from the mini comics as a Sword & Sorcery alien world, turning a great concept to something that even the 5-6 years old would consider atrocious, while the 200X it restored at the franchise its dignity and did justice with its epic tone, while gave more depth to the characters. Characters like Tri-Klops and Trap-Jaw who have been completely turned to brain dead morons by the Filmation crap, after have been introduced as freaking badasses in the mini comics. So better put out the nostalgia sunglasses and face the truth.

>Characters like Tri-Klops and Trap-Jaw who have been completely turned to brain dead morons by the Filmation crap, after have been introduced as freaking badasses in the mini comics.

Sorry to be contrarian, but at the same time, 200x made Clawful into a braindead moron when in the FIlmation show he was actual a decently clever villain.
>>
>>92633068
See thats what i meant with autistic,

Btw sure Filmation was more Robin Hood and for the 8-10 audience.
200X was for the older ones.

Clawful was about to turn in a formidable foe by Evil-Lyn in the 3rd season, but the show was cancelled. It was revealed by the producers of the series. But apart from Clawful every other character had its background story. Heck even Stinkor had a touching character development.

And there is nothing wrong with it. But Filmation isnt that bad as the other anon makes it.

Its different in the target group.
Filmation is tales for younger kids, hence its a little bit more naive. But not bad.
200X is for teens a Dragon Balls version more adult and a little bit darker.

Its just edgy to despise that Filmation is too kiddy like for an adult anon, so he hates it.
Thats why i get this face palm.

And i see that Filmation had triple amount of episodes than 200X. Makes you think.
Guess the 200X was too expensive to make as much as classic or She-ra.

Filmation even for kids's standard it's pretty much unwatchable now. On the other hand the 200X is one of the best animated adaptations ever hapoened for a Fantasy property. The difference is huge. As for the number of the episodes, this had to do with a lot of different reasons. In the 80's, was usual to do make a big number of episodes by dropping the quality od animation. In the early 00's each season of an animated series could include usually 23-25 at max. In case of MOTU the 2nd season was about to have 25 episodes as well, but because Cartoon Network did a horrible job with the hours that the series got in air, and since the action figures line tanked after Mattel's mess up with the variants, the 2nd season was cancelled prematurely. The 200X MOTU series is one of the great losts of the modern animated history.
>>
>>92636565
And still the 200X tanked.
But an "unwatchable even for kids" show did better.

Its just buggs me that there need to be a superior or whos better war. It doesnt make sense, since there are so many He-Man series that have their own timeline.

Is there any comic series or animation from different companies that are connected?
I mean real connected, take inspiration and use some things dont count.

Guess the MvCreation Comics was the only that connected to the 200X that was made by another company?

Filmation did better, because first there wasn't much of competition back then. When a more sophisticated animated series namely Thundercats came out, MOTU gone to retirement in less than 6 months. And second MOTU was a product of its time. The early 80's was the gold era of barbarian Fantasy. When the 2002 MOTU came out, barbarian Fantasy's best days have been long over. So it was much harder for it to suceed. But between these two versions, the 2002 one still holds, while Filmation is unwatchable yes.

As for other media, MOTU is offcialy a Multiverse. So appart from the 2002 Era, each animated series, comic or live action film is basically its own canon and not connected with a previous or a next incarnation. And it's better this way, since every version is accepted, and every creator that comes to work with MOTU, can do it without the necessity to follow any particular tone or canon.

It's not pure excuse. It's an explanation of why something worked back then and why doesn't work afterwards. Take for example the western films They were the hot stuff 50 years ago, but now they are almost forgotten.

No unfortunately Mattel didn't continue the 200X canon. Though the mini comics that came with the Classics line can be consider a continuation from a plot point of view.

Nope, still funny.

If it makes you feel better I've never seen a piece of media that isn't a bit ridiculous, and I'd say the difference between a good story and a bad story is that the former accepts the presence of the ridiculous and the latter tries to fight it.
>>
>>92638270
But sci-fi fantasy worked back than,
Avatar, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Fairy Tale, Final Fantasy all a fantasy with sci-fi worked over the years. You even could consider turtles as fantasy in modern times. But maybe 200X tried to hard to be adult stuff.
>>
>>92638413
So no MOTU knowledge, just a casual. Good to know for not waste time arguing.
>>
>>92638472
I spoke about barbarian Fantasy specifically, not Fantasy in general. Barbarian Fantasy the so called Sword & Sorcery and Sword & Planet's best days have ended with the 80's. All movies that came afterwards like the new Conan, John Carter etc failed miserably. And no the tone has nothing to do with that. Actually if it wasn't for the 2002 series's world and character building, MOTU would have been completely forgotten by now, since Filmation failed hard the test of time.
>>
>>92638340
Basically these, plus the New Adventures animated series and mini comics, the 87's live action movie, and the 80's newspaper comic strips.
>>
>>92638475
Why do you care so bad about whether the MOTU franchise is considered ridiculous?
Not to insinuate anything but that was my attitude when I was a 13 year old.
>>
>>92638856
And why you bother about the contrary, if you don't know nothing about the franchise? Just move on.
>>
>>92636789
200X only tanked because of the toyline's poor sales which Mattel was at fault for in screwing up shipments and distribution.

Filmation actually had more competition than 200X, but occurred in a market where toy-driven media was at its peak and thriving as never before or since then. He-Man was also a pop culture and media center-stone of the movement so it had success by that fact alone, not its quality in story telling. 200X came out at a time where toy makers were still trying to salvage the declining toy industry and virtually non-existent toy-driven media adaptations at that time. Same thing happened to the Thundercats remake years later (despite it's writing suffering after the promising first episode), then again Thundercats was far more remembered for its syndication rather than it's toyline which was only a single wave.

tl;dr, Filmation's success was due to the time and place, not it's quality, just as 200X's being dropped despite having strong ratings was due to bungled toy sales, factors completely immaterial to it's quality.
>>
>>92638906
Because I'm curious and that atitude isn't one I've seen irl in a long time.

And while yes, I'm not the biggest fanboy out there, I've read through a chunk of the comics and the filmation series and think the franchise is pretty great and has a lot of interesting and creative ideas. So I'm glad to see a MOTU thread turn up once in a while.

So again, why do you care so badly about the idea that 'MOTU' is ridiculous?

New Conan and John Carter failed because they were without a soul and a good advertisment.
Otherwise the He-Man film in 87 should be a success, but it wasnt really He-Man.
Problem here is that they dont take off, because too much money is shot into these projects, but plot or film isnt what it should be.
And Sword and Sorcery or Sword & Planets are in tv series very popular, like the examples i wrote.
You even could add Adventure Time or Attack on Titans, because they fit into this genre too.
But still 200X needed to rely on toys to be published. But She-Ra which toys didnt sold well got even more episodes than 200X. Guess Filmation did much better than the new one.

But i hope you see, that its ridiculous to compare classic with new. its a different approach and maybe time.

You clearly have no idea what Sword & Sorcery or Sword & Planet actually is, if you bring Adventure Time or Attack on Titans as examples of this genre. Conan and John Carter which are the typical examples, both tanked. The barbaric Fantasy is not popular anymore.

Filmation's episodes have been produced in a different way from the 2002 cartoon, which was on Cartoon Network, and all we know how it cancelled other good series, apart from MOTU. But if we are talking with that logic, considering the chronological endurance, then the modern comics that have been out for 6 years now, they should be considered more successful than Filmation which did well only for a couple of years.

I do, thats why my examples fits.
But you dont or at least thinks, because its with planets, there have to be a planet than just a anachronism with swords and sci-fi.
Or if there is just one higher technic than medieval and sorcery it automatical cant be sword & sorcery.
>>
>>92643613
Ok let me explain to you. Attack on Titans it happens on Earth, so automatically it's not Sword & Planet, and it has not wizards and barbarians so it's not Sword and Sorcery. Adventures Times has nothing to do with barbaric Fantasy either. If we are talking about Sword & Sorcery and Sword & Planet, in terms of animated series or films, we have MOTU, Thundarr, Blackstar, Fire and Ice, and in a certain extension, Thundercats in part. So if you want to see how barbaric Fantasy characters should like, well here take a look.

Attack on Titan is never said to be on earth. Or do you have some source? As far as i know its never said its earth. Ok it never says its not. But its fits the term.

And now to be clever, than men-at-arms kinda dont fit this barbarian theme, so motu cant be barbarian. Or can it? And Thundercats you consider to fit at a certain extension? But you wont consider Adventure Time?

I believe that you try to shoehorn things that have nothing to do with this genre. I semplify it further. Take as example the Warlord of Mars. They are basically barbarians with advanced technology. This is exactly the same case with the Eternians, and MAA. This is called Sword & Planet. If you find me one picture of Attack on Titan, on Adventure Time that fits in, i will agree that they are Sword & Planet or Sword & Sorcery.
