Maybe, Diego said "it has to be Jeanne" heavily implying someone had to die, but it was never actually stated, or properly implied that the operation was to create a guardian in the gorge, that's just something we've all assumed.
Could be it was accidental, and it would make thematically sense for GKC, since it has a tendency to make plotlines seem very big, but then they resolve themselves

keep in mind that the robots are willing to displease Kat so that she can continue her work. But how can they ruin her day with an arrow that kills people for the purpose of capturing a soul. Or as above anon said, keeping a soul sealed.

Ricassos are present in some flavors of two handed sword. They wouldn't be present in the one handed sword you or Tom showed.

The ricasso is an unsharpened section of blade above the crossguard and below a second, smaller crossguard. It's used to "half sword" the weapon for close in combat.
