"THEM!" are a fun little "villain"
>put on the collar
And here we go
Something kinda weird I realized when reading my Showcase Presents volumes, Egg Fu wasn't introduced until 1965! Far, far after there was any excuse for really negatively racist depictions.
I mean, I-Ching is racist, but it's not really a big deal because it's a positive character.
The Golden Age omnibus contains the following:
>The comics reprinted in this volume were produced in a time when racism played a larger role in society and popular culture both consciously and unconsciously. They are mostly unaltered in this collection, with the understanding that they are presented as historical documents.
Showcase does not, though I suppose it was printed in a time where PC culture wasn't as prevalent.
Despite the fact that the Golden Age comics don't really have anything as racist as Egg Fu.
I actually love Egg Fu despite that. Or maybe partially because it's just so hilariously unabashedly racist.
Which makes it disappointing no one pre-Crisis version ever really stuck.
Interesting letters.
I wonder if any fanzines from this time discussed this series.
Oh shit just announced Seeley is writing Hellblazer
>>92588248
I love Diana's facial expressions in this run.
>>92588175
Wait, the current book, or a new one? He might be an okay fit, but Hack/Slash is very, very pulpy
>>92588282
Assuming it's continuing the current one.
Haven't read Hack/Slash but I've liked Seeley's DC work, though none of it strikes me as Hellblazer-y.
>>92587968
I dunno, I feel like Asian stereotypes were pretty acceptable well into the 60's.
>>92588322
Well, it can't be as bad as Denise Mina
>>92588330
I guess I can't say for sure since I wasn't there. But I always think of 60's comics in relation to how closely they came out to Fantastic Four #1 and Spider-Man, Marvel as a whole was quite progressive at least concerning black people.
>>92587991
I'd say I-Ching is more tone-deaf than racist. The only thing I'd change about him is his name, because calling someone "I-Ching" is like if I called some white trash redneck "Bible"
They might as well have made this Duella Dent and had her call herself Penguin's Daughter.
Are you and Saxet Anon gonna fight?
>>92588403
Good way to phrase it.
>>92588427
Saxet Anon is providing a valuable service and I welcome him.
>>92583464
Fun test here. Last time I read this run I probably got like half of them, now from a cursory glance I could probably get most of them.
Also my Twitter namesake, Tex Thomson gets a shoutout!
>>92588390
Black people are a little different, because generally their depictions were of American blacks who were from the same basic cultural background as the writer. Asians looked different and had a different culture, not to mention they're a smaller minority.
This is a REALLY fun issue
>>92588529
A friend of mine who is working on his second degree, in history of race relations, we've had a lot of lengthy conversations about how comics reflect how things actually were at that time. But we only talk about black people, so I didn't know what Asians were considered like.
Bruce getting practice for the beginning of TDKR
Also for full disclosure I am not black and my friend is not black, and we are not Asian either
It's hard to read this at the same time as the other Anon's Odyssey
We were discussing in a previous thread when exactly Diana became aware of Bruce's identity, pre-Crisis I expect this will be that
>>92588655
Kinda goofy, I guess? I'm trying to find this panel from Silver Age Flash with a Japanese guy going "Wercome Bally Arren-san!" There were a couple exceptions like Jimmy Woo, but his conception was pretty obviously trying to make up for Fu Manchu being a really racist caricature.
>>92588894
I fucking love Batman's helmet.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming
Guess where Morganna would once again run into Diana?
BYRNE'S RUN
I'd like to reiterate that the last arc where Diana goes and fights with the Amazons I had totally forgotten, and it just feels so weird in comparison to the entire rest of the run that's like this.
>>92589541
But when are Top Hat, Moose Momma, and Pinto going to show up again?

Really, this of all things is what you don't believe?

Then years later you had Moore and Morrison actively trying to turn readers into toads

Well yes but she grew up with those folks

It's funny, a common criticism of comics artists is that they tend to default to generic perfectly sculpted people with nice pecs and big breasts, but every artist I've personally known has told me they love "unique looking" people
I know he didn't invent it or anything but a storytelling technique I always associate with Gardner Fox is starting by showing you the climax and then going back to the beginning

Little to nothing. It's a device used by lazy writers like say the guy who thought every episode of Firefly should work like this.

I miss Egg Fu, cause he's one of those characters who screams COMIC BOOKS. And that, I think, is one of the reasons people persist on that "WW villains are lame" meme, precisely because they are indeed comic book villains, and not monsters from Greek myth.
>>92590451
>that it's entry level and pedestrian
It has the distinction of being a cowboy show in space, but the cast of characters play to the writer's…tendencies more than they do to genre.
>>92590499
>one of the reasons people persist on that "WW villains are lame" meme, precisely because they are indeed comic book villains, and not monsters from Greek myth.
Fucking this.
I liked Byrne's version of Egg Fu until he had to drag New Gods stuff back into it. I'm a sucker for "19th century inexplicable super technology"
>>92590533
I thought Cowboy Bebop was gonna be cowboys in space, but it was actually Lupin III in space.
I remember how confused I was when Egg Fu was introduced in Showcase Presents, because there was literally no explanation for him. He was just a Chinese warlord who was also a fucking giant egg.
>>92590619
More people need to actually read the original Arsène Lupin novels.
IIRC the Grant Morrison version of him kind of kept with that. He was just basically a bizarrely deformed man with a mysterious backstory.
>>92590391
The worst way I've seen this done was in Bendis' Daredevil. He flashed forward a year and had Urich narrating what happened to Matt during that year. He tells a mysterious person about Matt meeting Milla, falling in love, and marrying her. The final issue of the frame narration reveals that Urich is talking to Milla the entire time, begging the question, why the fuck did he tell her about Matt's love life with her?
In short, Bendis is a fucking hack who managed to mangle a frame device and in media res.
>>92590678
Reading League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has made me want to read some more 19th century fiction, and having already read a lot of Sherlock Holmes in my youth that may actually be my best bet.
Diana cosplaying as original She-Hulk.
>>92590731
Well you're in luck because Lupin was created specifically to be a French counterpoint to Holmes. There's even a novel in which they compete for the some mystery (he had to rename the characters to avoid legal problems). Ironically the author met the same fate: publishers no longer wished to see manuscripts without his most popular character in them.
>>92590718
Bendis just broke his leg in a bike accident
Nice meme magic

>>92590834
He tries to do right by Holmes but makes Watson a bit of an abuse magnet.
And now Negative Man cosplays as Deadman
This is so fucking 60's spy show and I'm in love with it
BRB sandwich time
>>92590560
I like how steampunk Egg Fu got in-universe criticism for being a creepy racist as fuck caricature. Making it a thing lent some legitimacy while keeping the classic look. Byrne actually had a decent idea for once.
And frankly, the "problem" with Wondy's rogues is that nobody fucking uses them outside the main book. Sure, Dr. Psycho gets some mileage, but the others only tend to get use if Simone can fit them somewhere. Meanwhile, Bat rogues get spammed everywhere, so people are more open to them. Hell, speaking of Simone, look what happened when a writer decided to make extensive use of a Wondy rogue. Giganta is now waifu-tier. Bless you, Gail.
>>92590478
>Why is the head of the Hong Kong police a white man
It's 1969 and HK is the property of the United Kingdom.
>>92591118
> trap door
These just don't get used as much as they used to any more. Pity
Thanks for the break in SJ threads
>>92591170
If enough storytiming happened I presume it would slide a few of them off the board
>>92591020
People really like to make female rogues less villainous too. Like Gail doesn't always, necessarily, but as you say look at the bat villains.
>>92591020
IMO Wondie has as good of rogues as the Flash, at least potentially. In her ongoing Cheetah and Circe are incredibly strong villains. Silver Swan kind of lacks her gravitas if she's not against Diana, but then Dr. Psycho is very versatile and very threatening, Dr. Cyber has great potential, even Veronica Cale has potential. They just need exposure.
>>92591208
The Poison Ivy push lately and even fucking Killer Frost have been absolutely hilarious
>>92591170
Mods were doing a pretty good job of deleting threads that were basically just people wanting more attention than they'd get posting in the main thread.
>>92591235
Right, but even consider Rucka and Cheetah and Veronica Cale. I know you IIRC quite like the Cheetah thing and I think stuff like that is fine as long as it's not everything, but no question female rogues get that treatment at a far higher % than the dudes.
>>92591149
Trap doors are too comic book-y, and comic books being like a comic book is a bad thing.
Also, to be fair, waaaaaay too many heroes can fly, so sadly, trap doors have largely lost their practicality.
Byrne tried to reboot Giganta, too, but failed spectacularly.
>>92591288
Absolutely agreed. Making Cale more sympathetic was a mistake. I really hope Circe is the big bad of this run like I think because she's so incredibly unabashedly evil.
>>92591304
Too many incredible Mr. Burns trap door jokes have made them harder to take seriously
I'm not really sure why I'm missing so many digital copies
>>92591304
In favor of trap doors because they lend themselves to interesting page breaks desu. Unsounded had my favorite of the last few years.
>>92591394
Which, if anyone is interested, starts here: http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch07/ch07_28.html
I don't think any of the story will make sense but I love all webcomics that use the web format.
>painting her face yellow
>>92591384
I generally like paper scans better, although this digital coloring hasn't been as bad as others (like the WML issues you ran).
>>92591342
Dunno what I'm really arguing for here 'cause it's like I'm glad the villains haven't got exposure and I'm not. Basically 1. I'd like Wondie villains to get more exposure but 2. Editorial needs to come down hard on attempts to make them nice, because that's gonna happen.
I would find it easier to make Circe nice than Veronica.

Yeah, my girl is always up to something.
Speaking of that, notice how Circe wanted two backstage passes? I think the other person is Lyta. I always liked how Circe remains fabulously evil, but still genuinely loves her daughter.

Although, that's mostly due to lack of options. I mean, she doesn't really like hang out with anyone, Lyta's pretty much the only person she actually gives a shit about.
Also, did you see Circe's house? She has a fucking swank ass mansion. I think the implication is that she got rich putting out her magical services, like an evil Harry Dresden.

They did and they fucking HATED it.
Depowering WW was one of those dork ages from hell, even Gloria Stenheim was calling for DC's head and if you believe the urban legends, played a major role in killing powerless WW by way of threatening to take her magazine (published by the same publishing house that put out DC's books) to another company if they didn't restore WW.
Powerless WW was one of those things that was hated when it came out but it was followed by such dogshit, that it was retroactively branded as not being THAT bad. Think Clone Saga/Ben Reilly for context
>>92591342
Byrne didn't do anything with Giganta (that was the guy who came after Byrne who brought Giganta back).
Also, I'd argue that Giganta is fucked up because she has a super fucked up origin (an ape turned human) that has a lot of unfortunate implications. They should just use her Superfriends origin and say she was a runaway juvenile delinquent who stole magic indian powder from Apache Chief or someone close to Apache Chief.
