Power of Love works if it's written well. I don't think it was that bad this episode. A bit cheap and contrived, but that's Genndy.

From a storytelling standpoint it makes sense, the idea isn't a flaw so much as the execution

Some guy avatatfaging Shaggy saying that Ashi would be a daughter not a love interest. He was based, and later admitted that was shitposting for "Yous".

That anon seems to be trying to imitate him, but changing the discourse for "samurai jack never was good" which has nothing to do with what shaggyfag defended. He is doing it also just for (You)s and likely doesn't really believe that.

A big flaw though.
And I don't know if it's the only problem. The idea of Ashi, for example. Is it really a good idea to introduce a secondary protagonist into your One Man Show and make her crucial to his goal in the span of 10 episodes?
Sure, it could have been done better, but even still, it's a short time span to force in a character. That's just one example. To say the only problem is the execution isn't really true

Shaggyfag was basically saying Genndy is a hack and was giving him the benefit of doubt he wouldn't hamfist romance into the story but he did anyway, which proved shaggyfag right in which "Jashi" really did ruined season 5 with the awful writing and terrible pacing to force "muh feels" into a donut steel character.

Jashifags were hit hard because they knew he was right, but there's no arguing when it comes to waifufags. Season 5 was a disappointment, something not only shaggyfag called form the start but many others drowned out in the sea of autism of the retarded fanbase who believe genndy can do no wrong.

Honestly I think it could have worked if he spent more time in the episodes fleshing out characters and the like.
As it is I'm not sure anyone actually felt a connection to Chinkerbell. When she died I just saw it as a a good thing for the story of Jack, rather than an emotional moment. Hell, I probably had more qualm over Scaramouche being killed. Ashi on the other hand didn't have much of a character, she was just a plot device and when a plot device gets used up, it's hard to care.

Even the idea of romance in S5 isn't inherently bad. It just has to be done right.

Im SO HAPPY that all this buildup regarding Ashi/Jack's romantic relationship was all for deus ex back to the past where she could die in the most rushed, dramatic way possible. All that time spent, and for what? Personally I wanted the crazy kids to be happy, but I would have accepted her dying if it was handled with actual weight and decent pacing. See this what also gets me, we were robbed of Jack dealing with the moral dilemma of choosing the past or the present/future. Copypasting from another thread

>village and imperial palace completely rebuilt
>Emperor and Queen healthy again
>the landscape around the village rich and florid like before Aku's arrival
>the marriage had to be prepared and invitations had to be sent all over the globe
>the guests had to arrive from all over the globe
>Ashi was introduced to Jack's parents and became accustomed to that time's customs

I think it's pretty clear that some years have passed and that's also why Ashi sounds so surprised at the end, as if she suddenly realized what was supposed to happen to her. The effects of Aku's death had "reached" the future and the ripples "came back" right during the marriage.

So unless Jack managed to keep it in his pants all that time for the sake of traditions and politeness, he at least scored some before losing the love of his life

Does anyone else think Jack's character was kinda bastardized because of the Ashi shit? I mean I always assumed he knew better than to let his instincts like that get in the way of his quest. I mean when the southern belle was hitting on him in The Good, The Bad, and the Beautiful, he didn't budge. Even with Ikra, the montage implied all this time passed and they still weren't as close as fucking Ashi got in a few episodes.

I also hate how the tone instantly shifts in one cut in episodes 3. As soon as Ashi gets stuck on that log, he's suddenly out of 'fighting for my life' to 'dealling with annoying 'cute' brat girl.' There was no reason for that. From that point on the focus shifted from Jack to fucking Ashi. I get it was to try to fevelop her, but even with all that time spent on her it didn't do shit. She's such a boring shallow character, her entire backstory can be summed up in a sentence. There is no reason Jack should develop any feelings for her or anyone enough to jeopradize his mission. Also she was like many of the things just put in the show to be 'mature,' when really, in retrospect, that and the penis jokes and all that kind of spoil the show's reputation. Again, I get that they wanted to spread their wings with the new freedoms, but I think they were too eager to show 'cartoons can be mature.' SJ was already plenty mature without the crude shit
>>

You mean when he drops her to her "death" or after that?

If it's the former I don't see an issue with it, the threat was largely dealt with and he was tired of her rambling. If it's the latter, I don't see a big issue with it either. Sure he could have just killed Ashi right there but he had a second to think about his actions, doubted himself and then Ashi attacked and really she wasn't a threat at all, so he kept her alive.

He was saying that Ashi showed her love for Jack through actions rather than words. Which isn't untrue. Not many people would take the 'ol non-existence bullet for someone; and hers is the REAL non-existence bullet. Now, whether or not you think she should've gotten a love declaration of her own is another matter.

It mattered for Jack to say it because while the audience already knows Jack loves her, Ashi needs to hear it.

This will probably get buried in the noise but my main criticism is that the show didn't know what to do with itself

>never kills another human for the rest of the season
This bugs me. They never did anything with regards to the killing thing. 3 episodes of Nuclear Jack and then Ashi got forced in.

The others I can excuse.
>let's spend the episode looking for it before saying lol no he suddenly knows he needs to go on a vision quest for it to magically appear
Fits, because he got his hope restored and decided to actually look for the sword. When it wasn't there the realisation dawned and metaphorical losing hope sword bollocks. It makes sense basically, he said he realised the sword left him and he got his hope back so the sword came back.

>nah let's spend an episode and a half on an alien prison ship to focus on le awkward pauses and cutesy romance and then randomly wander into aku
I genuinely think this episode was laughably bad. It was seriously terrible. But that said, I don't have a huge issue with it in the larger context because an episode showing Jack and Ashi travelling to Aku's lair or at least some part of the Journey was surely needed.

>spend 30% of the episode showing people walking up to tv's and the scotsman listing all his daughters
Yeah this was annoying, every episode started off slow though so the same could be said for quite a few of them.

>okay jack did it! he defeated aku and is in the past!
Mostly caused by the pacing issues leading to no proper closure and instead just one scene hurrying on to the next.

I don't feel like you can say the show didn't know what to do because Genndy clearly had a 10 episode plan and it's not like he was writing it on the fly. Just the way he went about it in general could have been done better. Honestly I'm more bothered by how generic some of the stuff he wrote was, and sort of contrived.

>Jack just gives up the sword immediately to Aku, abandoning his entire life goal
>could have just said "I won't fight Ashi"

i never got people wanting to give up jack going back for that theme when it already happened with jack getting his sword back and letting go of the bad things from the past the weird thing about ashi though is she ended up representing both moving on to have a better future but also letting go of the past at first jack had to accept the past was gone but he has her and then he had to accept she was gone but he has a future not clouded with darkness now

Jack belongs in his time frame.

Ashi was never supposed to exist at all (just like Aku's future was never supposed to exist), and had no point of origin, either. At least she got a few years (?) of peace in a vibrant land with a man she loved.
>>

the whole thing was so damn dumb, maybe if they had fought or some shit before that, i wouldve accepted it, something that casted doubt on jack's affection for ashi
>>
>>92592858
>wasnt it obvious he loved her?

To you or me, sure. But obviously not to them. They were still acting in the nervous "I don't know what this is, I'm nervous but I want more" stage of first love. Add to that the fact that Ashi has never actually experienced love before, it might be she really needed to hear it, that it wasn't just a passing fancy.
>>
A friend of mine joked during the prison episode that it at least did a semi decent job of showing off the differences between Jack and Ashi's personalities.

Its like if they sat down to play an MMO, Jack would actually read the lore of the game before starting while Ashi would just grab a sword to start killing dungeon rats.

You people need to see this from an adult perspective.

The attachment you have to the cast of the original run is evidence that this show is impactful you because you grew up with it and/or its generally a work of art and a great show as well. Either way, you care more about their lives, some small yet significant amount of people with newfound hope rather than anyone else who suffered from Akus wrath.

Millions of lives were destroyed. Cultures and peoples decimated. Suffering of unprecedented proportions for eons.

This was one of the worst possible outcomes for humanity and life in general but you're too sentimental towards the only lives you saw presented to you because the show is a master of storytelling, and ill give you that, but stop and think of it from an outside perspective. A simple matter of numbers if you need to

To undo the future that is Aku is to restore balance to the world and save humanity. Thats what Jack knew from the very start. Its what he said all the time and was mentioned in the opening intro and the god damn song as well. This is from the responsible and noble viewpoint.

This is not even mentioning Jacks own family, people, and culture as well.

What makes the last scene pretty fucking sad but very touching and heartwarming is that Jack touching the ladybug again makes him realize a small truth. Not something that can make the pain go away but something that helps him heal.. Is that he remembered Ashi valued life and life's beauty in nature. And as he waves off the ladybug he sees the sun melt the fog and illuminate the valley of trees. Beautiful, and as real as he described them to Ashi, who imagined a reality so pure and bliss when she envisioned it in ep.5. And its the very same valley he took her too to see the one tree Aku left as a sign of his destruction.

He stands underneath it and realizes this is truly a world Ashi would have wanted to live in. Something she never had growing up in a life of pain and abuse and misery. A life dedicated to killing him. And sure enough, she ended up saving him instead. Because he saved hers. She was doomed from birth and yet he broke through to her and showed her a whole new reality. One of love and freedom. See it as living on borrowed time if you will. But she would have given her life for his because of this. For this reality Jack sought all those years.

And that gives him peace

They could have ended it with Jack killing future-Aku, Jack, and maybe even Ashi for silly Aku reasons, being basically immortal, they could lead the world into global peace.

Instead, they go back to epispode 1 following the original goal, kill Aku, and the entire show's events are all basically nullified. It's like one step below being as bad as a "it was all a dream" ending.

Time travel is the worst story element.

Its always a lafybug or butterfly that makes villians realise, "t-the world isnt all bad? WOAH." Why is this /co/?
>>
>>92597420
To be fair, they'd been traveling together weeks or months before their relationship took a turn for the amorous, and it seems quite a long time passed after they went to the past. I mean, the kingdom is completely rebuilt, Jack's parents are healthy again, and people from all over the world have had to had to be sent for and then arrive for the wedding. Still a short courtship by realistic standards, but this is the sort of narrative where things like 'first love is true love' are accepted as a conceit of the genre without the usual sneer.
>>
>>92597420
It's seen that a lot of time actually passed between returning home and the marriage.

Which obviously makes it more bizarre Ashi didn't disappear but he had to force bittersweet in there somewhere
>>
>>92597704
I mean, it would've been bittersweet anyway if Ashi had given Jack his heart's desire and helped him strike Aku only to die instantly from it. I suppose if some time passed, at least they got SOME loving peace, rather than none.

Yeah the butterfly effect logic is bullshit in my opinion. It doesn't make any sense when you think about it. Of course most people can't write time travel properly anyway so I'm not surprised.

In my opinion though the biggest problem with this season wasn't the ending. It was how rushed everything had to be to fit into a 10 episode season. Had the project gotten a proper duration of say, 24 episodes, we probably would have seen something different. However I will ultimately take what I can get, because the fact that a beloved CN show actually got revived and wasn't butchered completely for the sake of money is a miracle unto itself.
