It's actually not. Most companies will hold on to works because it means no one else can get their hands on it.

CN writing this off as a taxbreak also means that they would have to re-register it to continue. It's not lost in the sands, it's just in an area where CN would have to register for its trademark and copyright, again.

Cartoon Network was able to get a roughly $15 to $30 million tax break for writing off Megas so a deal would presumably have to be worth more than that for them to go to the trouble of getting it back.
