What a magnificent buildup to perhaps the most rushed ending in toon history. I don't even feel mad or happy or satisfied. Just empty. I loved almost all of it, but this really is a case of the ending just completely taking away any excitement you once had for something. Now whenever the show as a whole is mentioned I'll just be thinking: "Wow, that last episode was shit."

Honestly, I'm not upset that he got back to the past. It's that everything in that episode was rushed as fuck, and I really wanted Jack and Ashi to get married and live happily ever after. Logically, going back was sound as it was clearly the easiest way to kill Aku as shown by how easily Jack wrecked him. But even if the whole series was basically a battle between him and Aku, a final battle should have been incredibly satisfying to punctuate Jack's efforts. Have him sink low against a nearly unstoppable evil but prevail in the end. That's not possible if Aku is a bitch to begin with.

Also, Ashi's death could have been executed even better. As he learns how to move on and rebuild his life from his old relationship he helps the world rebuild from the tyranny of Aku.

So here we are, back to square friggin one huh? You think Jack made it out alright? Well let's see, he was robbed a good bit of his childhood, possibly still unaging, good chance he's still a bit nutty, most of his friends and his lover are now erased from existence and will never again see them even in the afterlife. You're happy with ending, that's fine. Jack got back, and saved the future from 1000 years of evil. But personally, I think a stronger ending would have been realizing you can't change the past, to move forward for a better tomorrow. After all, Jack has denied himself the way home several times to save the innocent.

I didn't mind Jack and Ashi going back to the past, and past Aku dying so easily made sense since he was weak from his fight with past Jack
What was dissapointing was that Ashi didn't die right after Aku died, instead of all the forced sadness with their wedding and shit. Also, it was bad that the Aku fortress ust blew up, it would have been much better thematically to have it wither and die, since Aku basically is a demon tree

Everyone excepts the Scotsman's daughters and spartans was killed by Aku's rain of death, there's no conclusion or goodbye for any of them.

Killing Future Aku would have been impossible - Aku gathers his strength from the worship of him. Through evil beings existing in his pressence and giving him favor, he draws on that power. Additionally, not only was Aku at his weakest in the past, he had also been further weakened by the sword, making going to the past a guaranteed assurance.

The reaaon Aku advanced technology and reached out to so many planets to bring in extra-terrestrial life was to empower himself. The future most likely would be one less technologically advanced and still without the majority of his friends except humans like the Scottsman.

The only genuinely bullshit part was Ashi regaining full control and not sending him back in a fit of brief freedom, with him reminiscing of her in the past (future). Her being 100% fine until right at the wedding was fucking stupid, even if it was "the power of love". If it would ended ideally, he could travel the world making new friends, find the Scotsman's ancestors and tell them of heroic tales of their children to come and end there.

After 3 satisfying episodes, I was expecting more of the same style instead of what followed. I think it would've been better if Ashi lost track of Jack and did her own thing as a side character, like Scaramouch.
She could be trying to track Jack down, only to eventually figure out what aku really is and change by her own decisions instead of being told to by Jack and every non evil person.
Meanwhile Jack is still the main focus and the story continues as the final chapters of his quest.
But to cut Genndy and his crew some slack, mistakes were made and the first 3 episodes were some of the most solid cartoons I've ever seen.

I agree that Gennedy should have just worked with his 10 episodes to conclude the show properly. It's obvious that the first three episodes were good because they were paced properly and shit, because Gennedy was most likely trying to negotiate for more episodes. But by Episode 4/5, it became glaringly obvious that he failed, so he had to bum rush his plot to it's conclusion, or leave the series on an embarrassing note yet again.

The whole point of sending him to the future was so that Aku could spend that time trying to figure out a way to not get harmed by Jack's sword. When that failed, he gave up and tried to let Jack die of old age by just constantly running from him and just living longer then him. When that failed, Aku stopped trying to beat the sword, but he still cares about living and will run anytime Jack has the sword and is within range.

When Aku was discovered by Jack thanks to the mafia, Aku was avoiding him. Jack gets knocked out, and Aku ABANDONS HIS LAIR AND RUNS shortly after. Are you a fucking idiot? If Jack could just go to his lair and kill him, Aku would have been dead years ago.

After the mob episode, there is a episode where Jack is in a city controlled by Aku, with a giant Aku pillar in the middle of the city. Someone he talks to asks why he doesn't just go to the pillar and defeat Aku, and Jack replies by saying "Aku has many castles that he constantly switches between. He never stays in one place long enough for me to get there and defeat him. That pillar is probably empty."

The viewers are more attached to the future than Jack's time. Outside of the first episode, and a few flashbacks the series takes place in the future. All the characters people like, all of their favorite moments, and adventures are from the future. Jack going back to the past poofs all of that out of existence. It's like genndy ripped out a piece of your childhood.

You could argue that he was going for the ultimate Kurasawa homage though. A lot of Kurosawa films have the theme that everything will change, and you can't bring back what is lost, even you fought for the right thing.

For Jack. He saved millions from thousands of years of torment but he has to live with his decision. It's the same as the ending to the Seven Samurai. "The victory belongs to the farmers, not to us"

Aku was only teleporting around because of Jack. If Jack had snapped and wasn't hunting him anymore he'd have no reason to move around.

And this is a show where Aku has a gigantic rotary phone in his hell towers, it's best not to take the lore too seriously.
