I think a lot of the "sad" scenes are more for emotional release for the characters themselves than actually making the audience weep, if that makes any sense.

And in spite of this overuse, I can still feel sorrow for them when the writers really try, like in Too Many Birthdays and Maximum Capacity. Not in tears, but this gut wrenching feeling that throws me for a loop.

The last time that happened was Super Robot Wars OG The Inspector and holy fuck that got praise.
