I know this is a bit of an odd question but if a kid basically grew up only around their parents (English speakers) and one of their parents had an English accent (the other has a more standardized English patterns), would the kid pick up the accent or have a weird mixture of both?
>>
>>92510198
no mixture.
they'd be able to speak both dialects fluently and probably use the one at home that is spoken most predominately in the family.

I think simpsons did a joke about it with the italian guy who could only speak broken english because that's what his parents spoke, but that's not how it works irl...
>>
>>92510198
Depends on their exposure to other English speakers. If those two parents were the only people the kid listened to on a regular basis, then the kid would probably pick up a weird mix of the accents. If the kid regularly listens to other people/Tv/radio in just one accent, the kid will probably just have that accent.
>>
>>92510130
real proud of ya
plus it's always nice to see a pistol grip barrel-over-tube shotgun
>>
>>92510198
I went to school with a kid like that, it was a mixture but it came off 'american' to most ears. only kids who watched a lot of british TV like I did could pick up on the difference. he actually sounded a tiny bit canadian
also he used words like 'rubbish' and 'bin'
>>
So let's say the heroes and the villain hate each other with a burning passion, and this very much informs their actions towards each other, but you can't think of a good reason for the mutual loathing. Is it actually necessary to explain it?

Right now, I have two vague ideas. One, the villain did something awful to the heroes and they retaliated with something equally awful, or they just had a hate at first sight sort of thing. I got nothing for the details of either, though both involve each party knowing each other since high school.

Again, them knowing and hating each other is actually important to the story, so I feel like if I'm gonna make this a thing, I should figure out how the thing started.

mmm no, we have very few sort of cartoony newspapery funny animal things. I suppose it's because it's something we're all familiar with, but usually in childhood, so we either think of it as memorable and something we imprinted on, or something lame and babyish or meant for your grandma and we're not into it. there's few people who just 'kind of like' that kind.
>>
>>92512802
As long as her jaw and brow and nose are still small, her hips are broad, and her shoulders are still narrow, she's feminine. no matter what her muscles look like.

I really love that mouth design. I think it might help achieve a more buggy look though if he had either really small or really large pupils. As it stands it doesn't look buglike other than the mouth even though it does look pretty good as a random creature design.

His species is a mix of things, so bugness is only about half the intent. I'm happy to know the mouth is effective though, thank you!

How do you feel about panty shots, /hyw/?
>>
>>92514222
As long as they fit with the mood/tone of the scene and series, sure. Bonus points if they're diegetic and makes sense in the story. If there's a panty shot in a scene where a girl is trying to turn on a guy I'm all for that, but panty shots in serious scenes are just distracting.
Also, this is just me but I prefer panty shots when they aren't all over the place. Having a few well times ones are nicer than just having a panty shot in every scene. When people start to overdo it I wonder why they aren't just making a porn comic.
>>
>>92514222
A seal of quality, and an understated means of communication between men of taste. The discerning reader knows what a panty shot really means. "You've had a hard day, rest well, friend and brother."

>>92514222
I think as with all "fanservice" it depends on tone and how maturely it's handled. I don't want to watch or read anything that feels like it was made by a horny middle school student but I didn't mind, for example, how skimpy Motoko's outfits in Ghost in the Shell were because it didn't feel out of place and no attention was drawn to it really.

You also shouldn't expect someone to empathize deeply and have serious respect for a character that the comic constantly uses to comedically sexualize. It just makes it feel contrived.

if your comic is trying to be "serious" I'd say abstain from it altogether unless it really isn't focused on at all and is just coincidence.

Another weird question but where can I go to learn about astronaut/cosmonaut training in the 1950's? I know astronauts then were mostly test pilots but I really want to know the nuances of what they'd do in a lot of situations. Like operations, safety measures, how they'd run a ship. etc etc

A part of my story takes place in an alternate universe in an entirely different cultures/ planets with aliens that are part of human society so there are some liberties I can take with technology, but I want to make it as authentic as possible.
>>
>>92516031
MediBang Paint. It's free, and you can cloud share files between mobile and desktop.

I mainly use the desktop version for quick sketches, and that has tools/templates/settings for making comic pages.

Not a lot of whistles and bells, but then, you don't really need all that many.

How do you make a loser character likable? Is it just about making them funny and relatable or positive?

My narrative character I talk through for that review series I've been working on is basically just a caricature mostly of my negative traits for humor purposes but I'm kind of worried that will come off as just plain unappealing. People seem to like him so far but I want to make sure to avoid making him just genuinely unlikable.
>>
>>92518181
i think most of the time people dislike an unlikeable character it's more that it's frustrating than actually that they judge them poorly. just try to keep pressure from building and have catharsis when it's needed. i mean nobody is like 'ugh i cant watch silicon valley because i hate guilfoyle' you're not supposed to like him. it's fine.

Update when?

A boy falls in love with a girl. He is mysteriously gifted with her phone number. He calls her and finds out that she likes him as well. But the next day, she doesn't remember the confession. The girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who likes his own alternate self. Hijinks ensue as the two tell each other their darkest secrets to conquer the hearts of their other selves.

nah. once is okay, but all the time strains credibility. embarrassing as it would be, they'd just start wearing diapers.. possibly trying to make do with the smallest pads possible by taking constant bladder emptying breaks.. and of course they'd visit their doctor to sort out their dysfunction and most likely improve if not outright cure it.

but i mean, I like that girl in Kiss X Sis. the dorky one that pees easily.

I can't draw so I just draw like a child.
>>
>>92518772
The problem is that it makes the comic redundant, to some. like, it's one thing if you're an animator for a tv show, and you draw porn of it.. because that's just a drawing, it's not a tv animation. so it's separate and lesser. but if all you do for your comic is draw, the porn is the same exact thing.. so it's like... you're sort of competing with yourself. it's better to draw porn of other peoples' and let them draw porn of yours.
>>
>>92519277
I assume you're drawing with a mouse, yeah?
you could do a comic like this fine in simple geometric shapes if you were able to use a tablet or something and just slowly (or quickly) draw nice even shapes. nothing wrong with 'like a child' art, yknow? everyone loves sanrio

If you're making a comic aimed at children/younger audiences that would probably hurt your reputation, same if you make any loli/shota/other fetish stuff. Honestly, I kind of enjoy it when people make porn of their own comics, so long as they don't post/share it everywhere. It's fun to look at sfw artist's nsfw material, and double so if the artist is actually competent at smut.

So how do you guys go about cel shading? I've honestly never done it before and it's proving to be pretty troublesome, even though most people say it's easier than alternative methods like the blur and blend I'm used to .Are there any tricks or tips you guys can offer me, or am I just overthinking things?
>>
>>92524280
I love it, but the thing is.. you'd think the shapes would be hard (and sometimes they are, because in real life shading just is not always a hard line) but what's REALLY hard is getting the colors right. Too dark and it looks too chiaroscuro.. too light and it makes the whole thing look amateurish and terrible. And the darkness problem makes the 'hard to decide where the line goes' problem even worse.
Now, ideally you'd use two or more levels of shading at all times, which solves both problems, but... that takes forever, and it has a way of making everything look too shiny. Now what can work is having two levels for a lot of things, then one level for more matte objects..

honestly the biggest issue I'm finding with shading is that no lighting is ever perfect. Like no white should ever really be white, but it should "read" white.

I usually just do cel shading with a multiply layer set to 60%-70% opacity, it doesn't turn out quite as nice as picking out the shadow colors by hand but it works for quick and dirty coloring. For cel shading you just need to pay attention to the general shapes of the shadows formed on objects rather that focusing on every hue shift/edge of a shadow.

Made another "general use" picture of Dupe and experimented with patchworking a few pieces from previous drawings to make it less time consuming without sacrificing quality.

>>92524280
Can you be more specific? It comes pretty naturally to me. Just darken the areas that would be shadowed and add highlights where light would be touching. I would say try shadowing and highlighting with colors other than black and white or else it muddles your linework.
>>
>>92524755
why doesnt that ever work when I do it? I swear other peoples' copy of programs has a different 'multiply' tool function
>>
>>92524824
What program do you use? I do almost all my art in Sai, but my shading usually doesn't look too different whenever I open it up on Clip Studio Paint. Color choice is another factor.

I need a name for a hacker group. Kinda like Anonymous but perhaps a little less 'grandiose'.

It's essentially a group of three guys who manage to be skilled enough to fuck around with the politics and corporations of an almost level VI civilization on the Kardeshev scale and get away with it (through the political power of one of the three). They're treated as more of an annoyance than a threat to this society since its developed to a point where death isn't really a thing anymore. (It's kinda complicated) They are capable of causing real damage, but it's not in their best interests to do so Until much later in the story

They don't really have a unanimous goal, and two out of the three aren't particularly good people (The one with the political power is a psychopath who's very good at manipulating people…the other's just an angsty nerdy guy with a lot of trauma who's only with the group because the other two caught him hacking into some network and threatened to turn him into the authorities if they didn't work for them/he starts to see them as an opportunity to get out his angst). Basically they just fuck with people/destroy property etc etc because there is something in it for them.

I honestly usually don't even care about the content that comes with people's patreons. It's more about me feeling that the people deserves money for their work.

>>92524924
I would say decide on a thematic for them and use a cool sounding term for it. Since it seems they don't have any unifying theme right now maybe you should consider what all the characters have in common or what "style" of hacking them use. What would they relate to themselves? The possibilities are endless. I always thought teams of hackers based on different programming concepts would be cool. Null values would use the thematic of zeroes, circles, outer space, black holes, etc. Boolean values would use the thematic of duality, yin and yang, binary code. Hexadecimal code thematic would use 6s, hexagons, possibly satanic imagery. There's a lot of options.

Thanks for the encouragement dude! The series will start soon I just wanted some advice on making a character that isn't really an objectively good person but is still likable and interesting. I'm kind of aiming for a "Jack Spicer" vibe where you have a morally dubious character that doesn't have a lot of positive characteristics or conventional appeal but is still likable in a way.

>>92525704
Well Dupe isn't a nerd! He's CYBER COOL.

But yeah I see what you mean.

Also to answer your question, no. Dupe is only a caricature of myself used for narrative purpose. I've used red/blue thematic my entire life and have about a billion bizarre duality related attributes that pervade even the most minute aspects of my life.

And secondavly red/blue coloration is used in a ton of 90s sci-fi and video game materials which is what my work is based around. You could take away Dupe's red/blue duality motiv but he's above all a compulsive nostalgic who's vapidly obsessed with pop culture and old media. Since Dupe is being used in reviews for obscure 90s PC games (mostly terrible ones nobody else has reviewed before) I figured it'd be funny to have a nostalgic fanboy with a rose tinted lens for retro games face some of the garbage that was available at the time.

So what website are you going to to your reviews on? And what are the games you're looking forward to reviewing the most?

I've always wanted to do something along those lines as well with the whole negative caricature kit and caboodle reviews and such. Problem is I'm such a lazy fuck that's not comedically talented in the slightest (with very weird and questionable tastes in everything) that I really don't see it happening remotely…if ever.

I think there needs to be a clearer understanding of what the situation is;
Why is the guy opening the door and saying 'don't do it'?
An emphasis on the guy with the laughing gas(?) laughing….oh wait.
no it's the guy….
oh.

Just add speech bubbles in at the very least.
It looks like guy 1 just walked in on guy 2 in the bathroom and the guy 2 is looking at guy 1 in a mirror due to how the perspective of both of them are positioned on the page. Even thought there is no mirror...
If it's a hospital add more to the background etc etc. Basically the context and environment and a better positioning of the dialogue could go a long way into understanding what's happening.

Characterizing your flaws is a fun exercise even if you don't use it for anything.

I'm just doing regular youtube uploads. Most of the games I'm going in blind or just have vague memories of. I already have audio for several game reviews done though. To start off I'm just playing shareware games since I've collected over 1000 of them and most of them I can't even find mentions of online. The one I'm most excited for is one called "Smileys Adventure" that I just remember being a fucking trainwreck of clip art, terrible photography, MSpaint drawings and shitty MIDI music, it was so tacky that it was spiritually overpowering. I'm choosing which ones to play at random though and just not including any that are too unsubstantial for the finished videos.

As for being funny or not, that's the thing I'm really worried about. That and voice acting. If anyone wants to judge how cringey my accompanying voicework is so I don't embarrass myself I'd appreciate it. Here's a little improv intro I just spouted out and added some music from the soundtrack for the project.

I'd be interested in knowing how people expect Dupe to sound as well.

Welp, I finished my pseudo-main character! She's an alien space pirate, and will act in sort of a stern mentor-ish role to the main character. She's the Batman to his Robin, so I really wanted to portray her as a stronger character with more masculine features. Thanks for all the tips on cel shading, I still don't really get it, but I guess practice makes perfect.

There's a part where some girl's dad looks up just as a drop of blood falls and lands in his eye, infecting him.

If the blood dripping onto her eye in that page is for dramatic effect and not because the blood has some manner of infectious or otherwise strange property, then whatever, otherwise I'd find it hard to believe that you've never watched that scene.

Just got home, time to start working, but before:

Thank you! The smoke is the result of the feedback I've got here, so I owe this to the thread, as many other changes I had.

>>92540364
Thank you too, and sorry both for the delay, the movie ended up being a bit longer than expected, and the long travel to the cinema sure didn't help.
So, this specific page took about 4 and a half hours, sometimes they take more, sometimes they take less. It depends on how many effects I have to do, how pictured I have the lightning and environment, and the amount of action in the page. The 4th or 5th was one that took me the longest among these, and this particular page was somewhat in between.

I can see your priorities kicking in, this looks great/waifuable

Decided to make a full lineup of my comic's main cast for reference. Especially since I don't have time to make the actual comic in color.

It's not too unusual for a first draft of a scene to be a retarded, JUST-tier piece of crap that requires a lot of rewrites, right? I have no problems re-writing this particular scene over a lot because it's one of the most important ones in the comic.

>>92565909
on the other hand, there has literally never been a better time to be an amateur content creator*... and the way things are going, there might never be again
*i mean, okay, yeah, technically if you had started in the early 2000s you could have the advantage of less competition.. but you would only just be making money as of the last 5 years or so.

it's likely you're too close to it. work on some other scenes for now, understanding that it was going to be late anyway because of the troubles you're having..

The spiders have bred specially designed Morkbeasts to salivate a special kind of organic cement that solidifies on contact with air.

The Morkbeast’s agile mandibles, under the control of a skilled Beast Driver, can deftly manipulate windows, openings, doors and pillars as the walls are being constructed. Adjustments are made by smaller creatures with an acidic saliva that breaks the solid Mork down into malleable Morkslime.
This leads to a very organic, curvy motif in spider architecture.

Also, the spikes on the side are there because spiders think they look cool.

You could have went above and beyond and found a way to integrate webbing in a more styleized and meaningful way in the way their living quarters are set up, I bet you can think of something real extravagant instead of just a small square room, since that's what comes to mind when I see these characters. Idk just a thought.

Yeah I was gonna make the room more cavernous but never actually got around to it.

There would be wackier and fancier halls and chambers for fancier spiders I guess

>>92572750
I was thinking of it coming out of the bellybutton. It's a convenient place for webs to come out of.

On the topic, does anyone have any tips for drawing organic scenery? I know for buildings and stuff you have special perspective lines because everything is cubes but for non-cube based scenery I've always just kind of eye-balled it.

I eyeball the cube buildings too, but still.

hi guys i have some issue
i struggle to find how my pages should like
i tried many different thing but i can't find why i dont like them
do you any tip to give me ?
>>
>>92572999
If a building is a cube, then nature is all cylinders. If you can draw cylinders in perspective then you can draw organic scenery.

As a painter though, I think good scenery is all about composition. Use rule of thirds, s-curve, triangle, steelyard, and circle compositions (you can look them up) to focus on the most important elements. You can fudge perspective from there.
