I don't know, movies could work out fine, there's a lot of room to work with in the Mignolaverse, it feels like it could work out well like they are doing with Star Wars. I am a little upset that the new movie is seemingly going to focus on the end of his life when there are so many great stories from Hellboy's child hood and middle of his life, a Hellboy in Hell movie would be excellent.

read Hellboy Library Editions vol 1-5 and then you can go straight to Hellboy in Hell. All the Mignola series are pretty well designed to be read individually but if you read all of them you were pick out recurring plot devices and themes. there's a lot of "oh shit that's connected to that?" moments but it's written so that you never feel like you're missing a chunk of the story.

I am biased because I do a big yearly Hellboy storytime so I would say all of it but you can read Hellboy by itself in the Library editions and then Hellboy in Hell and you could understand it. But I would also recommend reading The Magician and the Snake which is from The Amazing Screw-on Head and Other Curious Objects to really get the story of Hellboy in Hell.

It's all good, and although there is an overarching plot, most of the arcs work fine as self-contained stories

There's the big chance it isn't Nimue. I also think it'd be kind of ridiculous for them to leap straight to the Fegredo trilogy.

Personally, I'm pulling for it to be Hecate-centric, and take a lot of stuff from Wake the Devil. The Rasputin influence onto Ilsa/Hecate could be eased away to have Hecate and Giurescu take more of a center stage as far as the big bad guys of the flick. I'unno.

Early Hellboy is very different from what it eventually became. His first appearance had the public thinking he was just a comics character while he fought in the shadows. As Mignola got into his 'groove' with the series it shifts from the pulpy early stuff to a focus on folklore. Torch of Liberty was from Byrne's Next Men series. Also the series where Hellboy first showed up in print. I don't know if he was an Easter Egg, or if the two had early plans yo share a universe. Either way, it never came up again. Personally I wish that would be edited out of Seed.
