In 1968, Wonder Woman's sales had fallen pretty far. Carmine Infantino said she was a "tired" character.

So Denny O'Neil, who would go on to head successful revamps of Batman, Green Arrow and many more, teamed up with artist Mike Sekowsky to reenvision Wonder Woman for the modern day.

Over the course of a couple years, reaction went from mixed to negative to staunch opposition presented in letter form in a national publication. Hey, any mainstream reaction is good, right? Gloria Steinem, principal icon and activist of the Women’s Liberation Movement, the very movement that Denny O’Neil was trying to show his support for, published an article in Ms. magazine arguing that it was in fact an anti-feminist interpretation. And she and other detractors weren’t without a point.

Steinem argued that O’Neil and Sekowsky failed the moment they removed her powers. As Diana Prince, she was a powerless woman learning martial arts from I-Ching, mysterious master that he may be, he’s still a man. As Wonder Woman, she was stronger than men. Better than men, from a society untouched by the wars of men. By removing her advantages and her Amazonian traits, they had dulled the impact of the character, reducing her from goddess to an average gal living in a man’s world.

Unrelated. COMIC URBAN LEGEND: Will Pfeifer was briefly married to actress Michelle Pfeiffer

STATUS: True

In the late ’80s, Hollywood superstar Michelle Pfeiffer and the current writer of Catwoman were a common sight at Hollywood premieres, supermarket openings and glitzy nightclubs. I’d really rather not talk about it, but I will say this — she let me keep the cat suit. Ah, memories.

I always think of a panel in an early issue of Spider-Man where Peter swings past some kids at a campus protesting the war in Vietnam. Apparently Ditko wrote it as Peter dismissing them, but Lee went back in and had him say something like "Hey guys, I'm on your side!"

One of the things that lead to Ditko leaving.

>>

I know right. The marriage fell apart after the release of Batman Returns in 1992, when Pfeiffer felt the writer’s constant “suggestions” about how she should play the character of Catwoman became annoying. In a strange legal twist, Pfeifer was forced to change his name after the divorce, and dropped one of the F’s.

It occurs to me.
Wonder Woman is about Love, but by removing the vague positive sexual themes about her and THEN removing Trevor, you have no regular in her comic for her to love, at all.

You have to show her love in a more generalized way, which 99% of all writers are frankly awful at.

It would be pretty nice if the movie gets a good reception, even though I don't plan to see it. And it has been getting good buzz on Twitter as far as I can tell.

I wonder what would have happened if this entire revamp was centered around this style of story instead of the mod stuff.

It's almost ironic that this run was basically forgotten and yet it has an arc that exemplifies what a lot of people have wanted Wonder Woman to turn into.

OK, since this is a Wonder Woman thread, I might as well ask here. What are some good WW comics to read?

The definitive post-Crisis run is considered that of George Perez. You can find the link to the thread I posted it in up top under Gods and Mortals, in my Dropbox under "Wonder Woman by George Perez", or on Amazon:

Another good starting point is the Rebirth story Year One, up top under Year One or on Dropbox under "Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka\ V2016 #2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, or on Amazon:

Probably the second most recommended run after George Perez is Greg Rucka's. That's in the OP under The Hikiteia, Eye of the Gorgon, and Marathon, in the Dropbox under "Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka\ V1987 #195-226" or on Amazon:

Really, isn't pretty much all of Wonder Woman's Pre-Crisis stuff ignored? I think that's why Busiek's Legend of Wonder Woman is well-liked, it's a four issue showcase of stuff that just aren't used anymor.

Red Sonja is so cash.
You know; I once saw that the original Marvel artist for her released a comic with a Blonde Sonja that straight-up had nudity in it, made me laugh.

You might find enjoyment in Rucka's original run anyway, since it does have a lot of action and that's where Diana started using a sword in her ongoing.

I associate warrior chicks hacking things apart with sword and sorcery comics. Maybe you want anti-hero types? Is it important that they use swords or are guns allowed?

>>92492289
Red Sonja is a kind of superhero.
I'm sorry, but you've basically been misled; Wonder Woman isn't too much like her Injustice self except in non-canon comic books.
You could read Artemis very brief run as Wonder Woman I guess, but that's actually a deliberate parody in some ways.

You could also try 90's Bad Girl comics like Lady Death, Chastity, or Witchblade.

>>92492389
>>92492456

Well thats lame
Fuck WW I guess
>>
>>92492533
To each his own.
If you need something to be famous and well-known to enjoy it, you should probably look at the real reasons why you want to enjoy something; do you actually WANT to enjoy it, or just talk about it because it's popular?

If the answer is the latter, reading anything is fine even if it doesn't fit your initial idea of what you thought it was.
If the answer is the former, then why not try things you might actually enjoy and are in line with what you wanted instead of quitting when the entertainment isn't exactly how you envisioned it? Quitting something because it isn't perfect is a pretty lousy way to live life in general.
>>
>>92492533
Injustice is pretty misleading. Especially about Wonder Woman.
