How come American Dad is so much better than Family Guy?
Both shows suck (You) underage

The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife folks!
Seth McFarlane
Also the fact that AD! doesn't rely on cutaways for jokes

Better writers

Not much better. I guess it's easy to be better than modern FG, but from what I've seen of American Dad, it gets pretty formulatic and predictable. >Stan ignores Francine again
>Roger is doing stupid egoitistical shit again
>Steve is trying to get laid again
>Hailey is rebeillious again
>Claus is doing whatever random butt monkey jokes they can make up for him again
>something edgy happens again
Also it unironically has most annoying and pointless gay characters I've ever seen in Western animation. Did they really need to be put into so many episodes that any potential jokes featuring them became stale?
Steve, and certain roger personas make the show.
Because a completely different set of people write it and it happens to be a set of people who are better writers.

The characters are a lot more likeable
I like that one noise Stan makes. It's like "OOOH". It's used like bwah is.

Yeah. The edgy part is something that got really dialed up in later seasons, to the point where the show largely became about gore and shock humor.
Not that I necessarily have a problem with that sort of humor if done right, but American Dad used to be more than that.
Roger, Steve and a rich assortment of background characters who aren't overused
