This. This is a legit thing that's shown up here and dudes who work in marketing departments who post as anons have confirmed that negative attention is a legitimate tactic films like this will try to use to gain revenue.

I don't have a screencap of a post to back it up, but it's best, if you really don't like this movie, simply not to acknowledge its existence. When you get mad and post about it you are giving them power, and more importantly, potential revenue.

Underpants books still sell a lot. They've been at every kids book fair since its initial release. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are successful for that reason, too.

The last exposure Popeye got was the 90's or 4am re-runs on Boomerang, you know, back when they aired classic cartoons.

Nobody went to go see the new Smurfs movie because its the fucking 3rd one to a series continuously panned, and compared to such "flicks" like Chipmunks and Hop.

Popeye, on the other hand, is a popular franchise, comparable to Peanuts. And for reference, children loved Peanuts, and they loved that Trolls movie. It could of tapped into a healthy sum of money with merchandise alone.

Peanuts still gets exposure compared to Popeye. Most kids now-a-days won't know Popeye unless their parents told them who he was beforehand. And Peanuts was also Blue Sky's lowest grossing film, got slightly less than Robots even. Still made money, sure, but studios want big merchandising blockbusters, shit like Emoji Movie. Not something like Popeye which might barely scrap by with double return.

I mean, I loved the Popeye test, too, but I severely doubt the draw power he has to modern families. I don't think Betty Boop or Felix the Cat has any draw power, too.
