Batman needs his own HydraCap/Secret Empire. The best way to destroy him is to turn him evil. Give him the same treatment Superman's gotten so many times over now, but unlike Superman Batman won't be able to recover as easily. Make him an evil asshole that tries to take over the world.

And then, for added fun, when he finally is stopped it's just Superman taking him down and it only takes two pages.

Bruce has a dream about the night his parents were shot except he was shot too. He feels himself dying, thinking he'll be with his parents again. The ghosts of his parents tell him how he failed him. Bruce wakes up. Then later the Joker rapes him, Dick sort of knew it was gonna happen but didn't do anything about it. Alfred saw the whole thing and didn't stop it. Batman then kills the Joker. Some time later Bruce almost drinks himself to death then manages to hang himself and shoot himself in the head at the same time in his manor. Damian says he wouldn't miss him.

They reveal that Thomas and Martha were actually horrible people. The kind of people who would force poor families to fight each other to the death for a scrap of food. And Joe Chill? He was actually a hero cop trying to arrest them for these atrocities. He actually shot Thomas and Martha in self-defense because they were going to kill him first. But Bruce doesn't remember that. He doesn't want to remember that. And that revelation causes him to have a fatal stroke, all his fond memories of his parents unraveling into lies he told himself. His parents never loved him, viewed him as a burden, and often threw him to Alfred so they could have their fun with their vile activities. As Bruce dies, his final thought is that of his mother wishing she had aborted instead of making such a hideous spawn like him.

Yeah basically this. Batman dying by choice is very in character. If he's going to lose, its going to be on his terms. Its not something a Lazarus pit or an other character can just fix because he doesn't WANT to come back. I have no idea what it would take for Batman to be inspired enough to choose to come back from the dead, but I'd like to see it.

I would also be open to a really hokey "Batman in Hell" story arc that climaxes in Batman having to fight a giant, demonic, bat-like devil/demon/entity before threatening Hell to spit him back out or he's going to get really angry.
