Millions of years ago, aliens cyberformed the planet, making robots out of dinosaurs which became knights. It was scouted for consuming the star it orbits, but since there was life, the non-evil ones went "nope" and the tech was left there.
Closer to the present on Cybertron, there was a massive civil war which destroyed the planet between the two factions of Autobots and Decepticons. Autobot leader Sentinel Prime proposed to Megatron to recruit non-Cybertronian lifeforms to rebuild the planet, which wouldn't get implemented until much later. Hilariously, Megatron crashed in the arctic of Earth and laid dormant until about 2007. Decepticon scouts tried to locate their leader, infiltrating the world and leaving marks on human culture. Most human technology for the last century was a result of reverse engineering Transformers. When they locate him, call each other up and then Autobots also received signal and come to Earth. Massive fighting happens for years, involving among other things the revival of ancient evils and destruction of populated cities. After the battle of Chicago, humans enact a group called Cemetery Wind to hunt down and execute all Transformers on Earth, with the bounty hunter Lockdown as the muscle of the force. The ultimate goal was to mass-produce Transformers, so an army of non-sapient NANOMACHINES Transformers that change to vehicle mode through disassembly were created. It turns out the remains of Megatron used as the central hub for them was still aware, so he built himself a new body and called himself Galvatron, and fucked off to space. Optimus Prime also set out for space, wanting to rip of the faces of who Lockdown was originally working for.

This always fucking annoyed me. A sabot is literally just a casing that holds a bullet or missile and flies off/apart when the round is fired. To an extent, yes and no. In my opinion the best thing you can get out of Bayformers is Optimus Prime's tragic character development (yes, they actually followed up on his barbaric-slash-delusional depiction and gave it a rather consistent continuation). When you look at TLK taking Optimus and making him realize that saving his species means that there's only one way, he's begrudgingly forced to do so and when you look back at DOTM, you'll see that Sentinel was right all along, that Autobots have no future with the humans.

Animated, Prime and G1 if you're drunk or in need of a quick light-hearted fun with old characters. I don't particularly enjoy the current RiD, and Beast Wars is a mixed bag, but I enjoyed it before it became Beast Machines.

On the side note, most of the Transformers video games are pretty great, even the Bayformers ones, though you can skip TF1 (PC and Consoles) and TF4 (PC and Consoles) and if you have an NDS, try the TF1 games for it.

In terms of story arcs, no. Otherwise some of the cartoons do have a couple few dark one-shots like Animated.

Also IDW now has three stories going side by side featuring Cybertron, Lost Light and Earth.

Transformers can get plenty dark, you just need to contextualize things and put yourself in the shoes of the Cybertronians for a little bit.

For example, Transformers Animated has an episode about a mutilating bounty hunter who cripples and maims other Transformers by cutting pieces off of them and fusing them to his own body.

All I've ever seen Transformers-related were a few episodes of Beast Wars as a kid, the first Bayformers movie, and I've read Death of Optimus Prime.

TF Animated is a hard one to sell as it has a very weird art style but if you stick around long enough, it gets better. TF Prime is a macguffin of the week show in an almost familiar vein to G1's first seasons.

I found myself watching the 1980s G1 movie and TF Dark of the Moon as a gateway to Transformers lore and eventually found myself looking up articles on the wiki about the extended universes. It also helps if you collect the toys but the autism you'll find discussing it on /toy/ or any other forum might irk you a little bit.

Quintessons were literally Space Jews. Cybertron was a giant, automated weapons factory so the Quints could engineer wars on other planets and then sell weapons to both sides. The only things that motivate the G1 Quints are:

G1 is good if you can handle 80s animation, the movie is great either way. Beast Wars is worth watching all the way through if you want to get into TF, and Animated and Prime are very different but both decent shows

I would say start with those, none are particularly long

Not particularly. The Decepticons are still extreme hyper-cunts. The Autobots' position is basically "It's not the Earth's fault, so leave their life out of it." Watching Optimus struggle with coexisting with the humans and growing more brutal with his treatment of the Decepticons doesn't really erase that. The victimizing of the Decepticons has more to do with how lopsided the fights with Optimus started getting more than their moral standing.
