Sadie is depressed and full of anxiety, but she also has a crush on Lars (and possibly feelings for Steven). Her single mom (Daddy issues?) has emotionally stifled her by being overbearing. She counters this a mask of positive emotion.

Lars is also depressed but why and what he does with it is different. Lars has created a hero worship complex for the cool kids so strong he's devalued himself in comparison, leading to a strong sense of self loathing. He puts on a mask of "I'm a Jerk" so as not to let people see the real (sad) Lars.

Not only that, he notices that Sadie likes him an crushes her happiness to make himself feel better (it's a very powerful feeling to control someones emotions).

The scene in OP's pic I think is from the episode where the fat girl (Sadie) is upset, because she's in a pseudo relationship with the tall skinny jerk with the massive earholes (Lars) who she works at the donut shop with, and one day the skinny jerk calls out sick from work and has her cover him, but it turns out he's not sick and actually went to a trampoline party, where there was a hot girl. This seems to be shortly after fat girl and skinny jerk had what was maybe their first "not date" playing video games together all night when they may or may not have lost their virginities to one another, it's unclear, and fat girl is crushing on skinny jerk hard and is super jealous and embarrassed. So, later that episode the fat girl decides to prank the skinny jerk to get back at him for ditching her for the trampoline party, by giving him a donut with spicy sauce hidden in it. They have more history together, like the time she kidnapped him and stranded them both on a deserted island for like a week because she thought they needed a vacation. And recently they were both abducted by aliens, but whereas she fought an alien to save his ass, he immediately turned around and hid like a coward instead of helping her when the alien got the better of her and she was calling to him for help. Fat girl escaped the ship and is safe on earth, but currently in the show, skinny jerk is being blasted to the alien homeworld because he was hiding in the ship like a dumbass while the other abductees escaped.

Most kids with anxiety problems have a really big fear of failure, which you can see in lars. The way townies regard Steven seems to vary from episode to episode. Most of the time they treat him like an average kid, but they also seem to be aware of his connection with the Gems and weird shit in general.

Considering Steven was the one to bring Lars and Sadie there in the first place, I'd believe that she thought he had a better handle on the situation than he actually did. Also, she wasn't aware the island was dangerous when she hid the warp pad if I remember right.

Yes, but sadness is always about something, isn't it? "I am sad because I failed that test". "I am sad because I didn't make the team." "I am sad because we lost the game." "I am sad because she doesn't return my affections". "I am sad because my dog died".

'Angst' is more general, isn't it? Not a specific cause, but an all-encompassing feeling of discomfort. Not a bad day but a bad universe.

The difference with a depression is that everybody except the most thoughtless or cheerful experiences moments of angst.

See, my Germen family is like that. When their kid came back from college miserable, they said he was afraid of life, but over here my brother is depressed and on bullshit medicine because no one would hire him. I feel as though the Europeans have us beat when it comes to talking about emotions.
