I assume anon would know that. Watchmen isn't the only one to have used a 9-grid. In general pages these days are just splashes with a panel or two thrown on top. which isn't necessarily bad but I agree with anon that I wish we could see more structure and the 9-grid is quite nice.

I've read watchmen and I get that it is unsubtle to use it the way they have but the way people speak in these threads its as if gibbons and moore created it.

Because it's a clue leading back to him. When Wally came back temporarily in the cave he said that pieces of existence from all kinds of worlds were whirling about. The button (probably because of its inherent link to the world Manhattan is from) came shooting out inadvertently. And due to the nature of its arrival it's heavily doused in BlueDong Radiation. This whole crossover is basically Manhattan covering his own ass. First attempt is him reviving Thawne in the hopes that he will kill Batman or severely take him out of commission. But of course /ourguy/ Thawne sees the power of the button and has to have it. Seeing exactly how much that could fuck shit up for him, Blue yoinks him and leads him to his death. When Flash, and Bats decide to try and follow, He decides to put to use the Flashpoint reality he's kept on life support and mentally fuck Batman into doubt and consideration of retirement so that he'll stop pulling threads.
