When you first started watching the show, you obviously had an opinion on Star.
Mine was that she's just some shitty, over expressive, over designed OC that Nefcy's had since childhood and was lucky enough to force out onto a show by some miracle.
But as you watched the show, your opinion of Star probably changed.
Now I think Star has a very good design for the kind of character that she is. And I can't help but adore seeing her either joyfully blast away monsters, or be forced to become more serious in order to deal with problems she's never had to deal with.

My question is, how does your opinion about Star, from when you started watching the show, compare to the one you have of her now in S2?

If I remember correctly, when I started watching svtfoe I was still on the verge of forgetting homestuck being the biggest fuckin failure and scam of the 2010 era cyberspace.

I felt the show and her was just a little bit too sweet and hyper for my taste. To tell you the truth she reminded me of my gf from highschool. Fucken hyper all the time, clumsy, a bit of a klutz... but she had this genuine curiosity to learn about EVERYTHING and being all smiles 24/7. I didn't know anything about the show's background but when I learnt about it I was somewhat distraught. Kinda like you I thought "this is just a glorified teenage OC with not much to support it". And surely enough the overarching lore was a little slow to start but when it finally did...

I found myself singing the theme song from time to time even! I've found that I can relate to Nefcy's position somewhat. I have this epic saga of a non-cape, alternative superhero story where many of the main cast look like me and my friends, although the personalities are completely dfferent. I always daydream about how the animation process would go for it, if I could make it into an actual thing.

But now the hyperactivity and diabetes inducing cuteness has grown on me because I got attached to the characters. I like how Star and the show is somewhat of a mix of western and eastern story tropes. I love that they give her new outfits almost every episode. She has her faults, but tries to do her best to learn from mistakes. I like that under all the sugary cuteness she has a level of personal complexity that's not apparent at first. She's cute, hella strong and is pretty funny sometimes.

Overall I'm pretty sure I love her. And I will never forget her, like I never forgot about Mako from KLK. and Equius

Based on some of the shitty-because-out-of-context images used in press releases etc. before the premiere (one being Star spazzing the fuck out about taking the wand from Moon, from the first episode) I sort of wondered if the show would be legitimately lolrandom.

Then when the first episode aired I thought maybe they were trying too hard to make her cute or funny but that there wasn't much substance. I liked her more as the season went, not that I'd ever disliked her, but I still thought there wasn't much there by the time the season ended. Toffee and the worldbuilding stuff were way more interesting at the time.

Then throughout Season 2 suddenly they did an amazing job with her character, actually presenting her flaws as legitimate problems and taking characteristics played as 2quirky traits or one-off jokes in the first season and making them established facets of her character. By the end of the season I think she's now definitely the most developed character of the show, almost surprisingly compared to the previous season, and my favorite character too. I want to see her come into her own and mature, earn her place among the past queens and all that.

Although I've never had a problem with her clothing. I'm glad we live in a time where she doesn't have to have, like, a solid-colored dress and hardly any accessories. Star's design is really distinctive for a lot of reasons, not just one feature.

So yeah, Star got really good for me when she went from a blandly likable/cute lead with one-episode flaws that aren't really flaws to ROYAL SECRET FROM ROYAL SHAME

Though I see this and I love reading it. Watching the show made me re-realize my love for drawing and is forced me to reach for new heights I never even knew I needed to reach. Something I needed badly at the time.
Like you, it evolved into a want to animate as well. If there's anything I can do about it, I'll make sure that drawing/animating is somehow a part of my life.
And when I do have something going for me, I can't wait to credit this show as being the one thing that moved me enough to want to do something more with my art than just acting as a pastime.

S2 is when Star really does shine her best as a character. It sets her up and enforces her so well. I honest to god cannot wait for S3 with the thought that it might polish the other characters as well.

The absolute best quality of this show for me is that it sneaks up on you, provided your expectations aren't too high. And given it's over the top first appearances, there's a high likelihood you won't think too much of it until you watch it.

I feel like in S1 it was partly conscious and partly "yeah, we did make a few shit decisions early on this season, let's try to turn them around a bit."

Like I think maybe really early they did think it would be mainly comedy with no overarching plot, Ludo's all the villain this show needs, etc. But then they could sort of play with him being an incompetent villain and that costing him by the time they'd introduced Toffee, using him being terrible as a villain to make Toffee look better even in the show's actual plotline.

Definitely by the end of the season there was more thought put into it than in the very beginning, so that was conscious. Though while some people were surprised with how S2 turned out it was pretty much exactly what I expected re: the amount of plot and lore we got-- I defended S1 at the time by saying there was more lore and development happening than the show would get credit for even among its fanbase.

Though 2 was a better season than I expected too. The move away from feeling mostly episodic besides just the plot episodes, with different episodes actually referencing each other all throughout the season and the majority having some purpose for the larger narrative, and the greater focus on Star's character development, were massive improvements.

Guess I think that Star could've ended up a mediocre to just okay comedy that never really went anywhere, but luckily it had some great intervention very early on.

Personally I think that traditional 2D animation is the height of human achievement and not much compares to the vast scope of things you can do with it. I'm also familiar with it enough to know that it's hard as fuckin balls. Plus my nihilistic world views keep me from creating much anything, let alone proper animation; so I'll just stick to building my story in my head and maybe write it down later in my life. I know the characters like the back of my hand and how I want each scene to feel anyway.

This is also a thing that I really REALLY like about the show. To be frank, Star Vs is the first western cartoon I've watched in a long time. They started feeling a little samey, all comedy, all episodic,
I've watched a ton of anime looking for stories. Looking for something to watch that has something to say, says it and doesn't expect you to go digging for details in an attempt to find all the sneaked in story elements.
And then Star Vs came around. I had a long break from anime by then and really just wanted something to relax to.
And lo and behold, STORY! Things happening for REASONS! What an amazing find.

I hope we've reached a time when western cartoons finally start appreciating the story element. And making shows centered around story instead of being centered around "What random new situation can we put these characters in TODAY???"

Hmm. Less about Star and more about the show in general, I expected it to be really lolsorandom. I mean, it is to a degree, but there's some actual comedic timing and it's not just completely random so much as just unexpected. Little situations like seeing Star and Marco playing on a giant board game before the real Star and Marco close it up casually as the sapient miniatures scream for help, the show treats it as a throwaway gag and it takes you a bit by surprise. Or when Marco occasionally lets slip a depressed nihilistic view of the world.

Combined with the rest of the show it actually works out. I don't think someone who's stubborn about not giving a show a shot for being too much like what the kids like these days would like it, but I went into the show being open to enjoying it on its terms and I was pleasantly surprised.

I also like that it's a girly show aimed at girls that seems like it would also be enjoyed by young boys. Most shows that are popular with kids of both genders tend to be aimed more towards boys and the girls just kind of deal with it, girls are expected to just act more boyish. It's nice that there's a show that sends a message that it's OK for boys to like girly things, Marco's not portrayed as incompetent and he's never given shit for being in a dress.

That last bit I think is important. I genuinely like and am impressed that Princess Marco wasn't treated as a total gag in that Star mocked Marco for looking like a girl/dressing up like one/etc.

It's a good message to send and it's not hamfisted at all.

Plus, the fact that it's reinforced later on and the whole "there are loads of princesses who actually believe Princess Marco is still a princess and have 0 clue it's a dude crossdressing" being played straight is nice too

I enjoy the fact that BOTH leads are comic relief and BOTH are capable as fuck. It's so much more versatile.

One of my absolute favorite gags was when that face stealing troll was about to walk through the portal, escaping Marco and actually succeeding in her plan. And all Marco does is chuck his damn book and knocks her out.
If we're talking about unexpected, that shit made me lose my mind. I had absolutely no idea how to deal with that dire of a situation. It seemed utterly hopeless and Star was about to lose her face. But how they dealt with it was so anticlimactic and so well placed. I couldn't stop laughing and rewatching it for 5 minutes straight.

Yeah, I think Marco is what tipped the scales for this show. He could have been just a foil for the female lead to look good and competent and the show would have been largely for girls only - we may or may not have still loved it, but it'd be something like us watching the Sailor Moon dub when we were kids, something young boys would have to hide and be ashamed of. He could have also completely overtaken the show with the titular character effectively being his sidekick or at best his equal.

And for the first few episodes, that could have happened. Marco's two loser friends were shit for reasons other than just being annoying, they were Marco's friends. Most stuff centered around Marco and his circle of friends and family. Star had her parents and Pony Head, the show wasn't really from her perspective. A lot of the stories centered on what's going on on Earth with people somehow connected to Marco but not Star.

But they axed those shitty characters and focused on Star while giving Marco the right amount of attention. He's not overpowering the story and fighting for MC status, but he's not treated as merely a supporting character that the MC gets as a reward at the end either. He's a close #2 in a show about #1 and it works really well.

Yup. It's surprising how good Star and Marco are for each other as people. They help each other with the character flaws they each have, and even if they screw up and hurt each other, they're willing to make amends and admit they're wrong (even if it takes time and extraneous circumstances to help that along).

It's a damn good friendship, and also the basis for a good relationship too.
