I've read literally every classic Iron Man comic and find his how his film characterization seeps into his comic book one entirely annoying because his film one is basically just RDJ being RDJ, while comics Tony Stark is a completely different person...or was, anyway.

Are you stupid? Because they didn't have the rights to their popular characters, none of them, none of the X-Men, Spider-Man, or F4 characters

Ghost Rider got a movie before he did. Daredevil got a movie before he did.
Pre Marvel Studios the Iron Man movie was in production hell for almost a decade, bouncing around from Universal to 20th Century Fox to New Line and finally back to Marvel.

Marvel Studios decided to start from scratch and STILL couldn't get anyone to write the damn thing. It wasn't until they made those Blur Studio shorts that anybody began to give a shit. Jon Favreau made it his baby and he's the only reason it got greenlit at all.

NONE of the Avengers characters were marketable prior to 2008. How do people not remember this? The only reason any Avengers movie got made at all was because EVERY other major studio let the options expire or just never bought them in the first place.

The cartoons were not popular. It was part of that shitty low budget Marvel program block that no one watched.The toy line that corresponded with the show warmed pegs at close out stores like KayBee.
In-universe the character was important but you didnt see Iron Man lunch boxes or bedding sets.
Same for Thor or Cap. They were niche. The Avengers: United They Stand cartoon pretty much got laughed off TV.

All Marvel had was Spider-Man and X-Men/Wolverine in terms of visible, marketable characters.
Well, and Hulk. Even before the 2003 movie you saw Hulk stuff around even if it wasn't related to the cartoon
