When I think about it, that's probably where a lot of this hate comes from. The first three episodes were darker and more 'mature', which is what many people wanted. And when the show stayed true to the original series by having a variety of tones they got mad and started screaming about pacing.

I feel the like the huge shift was the point, and it works from a narrative standpoint when you consider Jack's mental journey.
>first few episodes are grim and dark, reflecting Jack's hopeless existence and mental instability

Her importance to the progression of the story is I think the biggest evidence of her survival. I sure hope I'm right, but we'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

Yeah I ship her and Jack but that was only watching them together, before that I realized Ashi had more to her and thought she would be a good ally to Jack and nothing more.

I've watched the series probably four times all the way through. I keep trying out this theory that he doesnt need to go back. I keep tossing it around in my head. I understand the argument behind it, how its all metophorical. But if you really watch the show from beginning to the end of season 4, it doesn't hold up. There's no ruby slippers bullshit theme present here.
Jack's father is enslaved. His people are dead and dying. Jack comes SO close to winning and oops, Any sent him into the future. Every single episode reminds us of this in one way or another. Sometimes very subliminaly.
This is repeated further in season 5: "Aku's grasp chokes the PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE". All injustices that need to be undone.

I get it, I really do. Getting back is the cliche thing to do, but it's much more proper for Ashi, a character introduced at the end of the show, to be the collateral damage for Jack going back, rather than the entire purpose of the show being the damage and the the last minute character just throwing the whole thing through a loop. Maybe if Ashi had shows up earlier it would have made sense. But here it really doesnt.

We also have no idea how the final episode will play out. We know the Scottsman will play a roll, but where does it even take place? I have a feeling we are all in for a surprise.

Jack himself says all he has are happy memories and maybe that's what he will decide he needs. He knows his family is gone but he also knows how much people he has helped and that his ancestors will look proudly upon him for conquering the demons in the world and inside of him.

Ashi was like Jack was at the very beginning, confused by the world and amazed by everyday things. Jack relied on kind strangers and exotic civilizations to learn the future world's customs and workings. Comparatively, Jack served as Ashi's guide to helping her understand the world. She's already helped bring Jack back to the past, by improving his whole mindset and allowing him to discuss the memories he has.

You know, during this season Jack hasn't even mentioned once the idea of going back to the past (not counting the intro). In the first and second episodes, both Jack and Aku seem convinced that there is no way home and he's stuck there forever. And even after recovering his will and his sword, he still won't try to get back , he only wants to destroy Aku. The past is only a memory now. If his depression was caused by being unable to go back, and he has managed to overcome that, wouldn't getting back to the past defeat the purpose of his arc?.
