Any decent writer will recognize turning them into honest lovers will only break their characters and get rid of some of their dynamics, even with other characters. There's no good reason to officially and (supposedly) indefinitely separate Harley and Joker as there's no good reason to turn Ivy into an honest and innocent lesbian. Their antics together used to be fun and interesting because they broke their respective monotony and were treated with levity, making them together the new monotony makes as much sense as Batman retiring to live a normal family life with Selina or Talia
