Asma is showing concern for Ruth's well-being. This is very much out of character for Asma, who we have seen as a disgruntled postal worker in almost every appearance she has ever made. If she's showing concern for Ruth due to some previous connection between the two that has never been made known until this point, then fucking hell, Willis, you're doubling if not tripling down on Tell Don't Show.

I'm pretty sure that not even the most /fit/ of superheroines can kick a five-cubic-foot chair into the air and out of the dimensional plane, not to mention Ruth's posture while doing so. Seriously, if Ruth doesn't come out of this with a broken foot, then clearly nothing bad can ever happen to bisexuals, which Ruth apparently is now. Also, those overalls don't looks like they offer much in the way of flexibility.

But I think I have a point in that we've yet to see Asma remember a person's name without reference material, much less show concern for anybody else. In the nine comics in which she's tagged (and yes, it is only nine comics), she only speaks in four of them. All of them have her using a reference to name a person; three are for packages and the fourth is Pic Related. In the other five strips, which includes today and yesterday's strips (not tomorrow's strip in OP's post), she is either not speaking or literally a shadow in the background.

We've no reason to assume that Asma knows anybody's name, much less Ruth's. Hell, from the four strips where Asma has any dialogue, HER name isn't even dropped.

I think we're supposed to empathize with Ruth somewhat by seeing that she's exhibiting kick the cat as her Grandad heaps shit on her and she heaps it on those around her. It's been the character since Billie was in her closet and heard Clint berate her over the phone.

And I guess she doesn't express remorse towards Asma but she does towards Amber? Is it because she meant to do it to Asma, but accidentally "almost hurt" Amber? She's still lashing out and being a dick, whether or not she intended for someone to receive the brunt of it is immaterial.

And on top of all that, as soon as someone has something over her, she curls up and hides instead of taking whatever punishment may come.

Why would Asma get involved and why would Ruth react like that?

It's basically a look that Asma is so done with everyone around her, it contrasts with her genuine look of anger at having Ruth tell her off. It's poor comic making, using a supplementary reaction/commentary to the "punchline" rather than letting it stand on its own.

Of course the punchline is also terrible, but the solution isn't to have someone react as if "it's so wacky" or "I can't believe these girls." Like >>92424749 said, we literally saw Amber under overturned chairs and now Ruth is kicking over the chair, so of course Amber would be under it. This would've been way better as a gag if Amber was hiding under various objects standing normally, and this was the latest in a series and was more goofy or outlandish than the last.
