It IS sort of shitty that all relationships in mainstream media are straight, because it perpetuates this idea that our relationships are deviations from the norm, weird, strange, or a "special interest" group instead of just other ordinary people. Media meant for "everyone" is almost exclusively straight - but if you want gays, you have to look for LGBT media specifically.

In regards to children's media, like Samurai Jack, LGBT relationships not being shown due to censorship or controversy is indicative of our relationships being seen as more taboo than straight ones. No parent worries about "explaining" heterosexual couples to their children.

Representation is necessary, too. It might sound crazy, but I didn't even realize that I was attracted to other women until I was a teenager.

When you're constantly bombarded with heterosexual relationships, it is sort of cathartic to joke about "oh gee whiz more straights never saw that coming lol".

With all of that said, I really like Jashi and ship it pretty hard. I think that blaming on individual is childish because it ignores the myriad of factors that contribute to what gets approved, or what writers anticipate will be approved, etc. I think Tumblr needs to chill the fuck out. It's lame that there isn't more gay representation, but it's a collective issue, not the burden of one dude and his cartoon.

Because most of the entertainment business is not there to "reflect reality", it's there to appeal to their target audience. Discrimination would imply studios don't include a certain type of representation because they had a prejudice or bias towards them. But that isn't the case with live-action because almost every major show has a gay character of some kind now so as to appeal to as many audiences as possible. Studios follow the money. If half the country suddenly wanted gay Muslims in media, you'd be seeing shows like that up the ass.

Also, to question why do heteros want to see themselves portrayed but then flip it and go how gays want to see themselves portrayed makes no sense. Yeah, people gravitate towards someone who looks, acts, or is familiar to them. That does not mean straight people are incapable of liking a gay romance story, it just means they are more likely to be interested in a straight one.

But to say that studios are trying to make characters that are relatable to their audience = discrimination is false. It's like saying a bakery that makes more cakes than cupcakes even though cakes sell four times as more is being bias towards the cupcakes. If there is an audience, it's certainly not big enough for a studio to want to have more than one, or at the most TWO shows, starring a gay couple. They only tap into the market by shoving them as side characters to "appeal" to that audience.

Sorry, not everything is 50/50 equal in terms of interest to the general public. You're lucky for it to even be 30/70, but studios don't owe small markets several shows catering to them.
