Wednesday into Friday. On wed. paulo says something like "Mike amiright" and hen that page ends with Lucy telling Paulo to stfu. Then Friday paulo asks what's up and then Augustus comes in soaking wet (because he was just taking a shower) and askes where the freash towels are and then Paulo storms off and they don't go to he carnavel. Then Taeshi pats herself on the back for "awesome drama."

So since a lot of people seem to be hating this development, I want to say I've actually loved it as a mikefag.

For me the most important overarching story of BCB was that Mikey's and Lucy's relationship was toxic. He enabled her to act as she pleases stopping her growth, she abused him which hurt him and gave him self esteem issues. It was obvious to everyone from outside and on numerous occasions they tried to talk about it and change it, but it never worked. Eventually they both came to important conclusions - Lucy that she was shitty towards him and needed to better herself because he needed her just as much as she needed him. Mike that this relationship is toxic and they need to end it.

Of course both decisions were influenced by outside, Lucy by that Acapulco guy and Mikey by Sandy. The result was that Mikey didn't buy Lucy's change and was hell-bent on ending the relationship, which depressed her to the point of suicide. Mikey immediately regretted what he did and wanted to patch things up. Important part - Lucy didn't attempt suicide after he told her to fuck off, she attempted it when she noticed that nothing changed. Her bettered behaviour didn't make him like her more, and her apathy didn't drive him away - he was the one to decide he hates her, and then he was the one to decide he wants to be her friend again. Nothing she did mattered, and they would continue this shitty relationship.

Then 6 months pass. This time they weren't pushed by anyone - they had enough time to think things over for themselves. Mikey now feels extreme guilt. He realizes he can't just cut a person he cares so much about like that from his life. When he sees Lucy again, he's nervous. Keep in mind he doesn't know all the details. That she was already going away, that it was actually him trying to patch things up that pushed her to the brink, not his rant. He doesn't know how she's been these past 6 months, whether she needs to talk things out with him or if he should stay away (at least that's how I interpret his behaviour in the last chapter). I'd like to think he wants to check if she's ok, but maybe he just wants to selfishly abolish himself from the guilt, or maybe he even misses her and wants to be friends again.

And just like that, the roles reverse. Mikey is of course much better suited to be a nice, considerate person. Say what you want about him acting autistic when it comes to Sandy and him being a dick to Lucy that one time, but in like 99% of the comics, he just hangs out with people who want to hang out with him, doing what they want, tries to help when he can and is pretty much always nice to everyone around. So given the chance he could probably patch things up with Lucy. Of course she’s having none of it. She’s cold, she’s a jerk. She has absolutely 0 issue telling Mike “fuck off, we aren’t friends anymore”. Feels good about finally being able to say it, unlike Mikey who immediately got sick to his stomach. Granted, she just told him “I don’t like you anymore”, not “You’re a parasite and you will end alone”. But this also speaks of their personalities - Lucy just wanted to efficiently burn a bridge, Mikey had to vent and go on a fit.

The way I see it, current Paulo has just about zero reasons for wanting Lucy anyway. Back in the day, it was all about big white cat boobs, but he's at least grown enough since then to care about personality and character (sort of; Taeshi loves hammering that reset button). With Lucy, he's done a bit of one-sided comforting and gotten back very little. Paulo's gone and idealized her in his head; been pining after that illusion ever since she left (some shades of Mike/Sandy there). But in comparison, Daisy's always been there for him, and lately he's gotten the chance to spend time having fun with her. They share some surprisingly common interests. Paulo's never had that sort of relationship with Lucy as she was always brushing him off or coming to him during breakdowns and rebounds. This is the first time she's really opened up to him, and it may end up being a version of too little too late.

That or she looks at her schedule, realizes that she can only fit the carnival in on Daisy's birthday, and Paulo has to choose between them.

Personally, I really want to see Paulo and Lucy talking. Paulo was a golden boy when Lucy was rejected by Mike, he really cares for her, and the last page shows us that Lucy still cares for her "ex-friends", she just fears rejection, which Paulo showed her wrong. I can see Lucy opening to Paulo in a more sentimental level from now on since he at least is willing to listen to her.

But time will tell, and I really, really hope Taeshi doesn't cause drama just for the sake of it. I wanna see those two cats happy for once.
