Moana's inciting incident outright has Moana disregarding her island's traditions, and her moment of testing involved whether or not to return to them. It was as much about not cleaving to tradition as it was about reconnecting with your history.

At the end of Frozen the royal family all ends up returning to their castle and running things. Frozen's message was more about love and what it is than it was about whatever it is you're saying.

The marketing had me braced for annoying loud screech randumb snowman retard, but in the movie most of his dialogue is actually really well written and delivered. His intro scene is fucking great.

It was something they'd been doing for over a dozen generations (don't have the movie pulled up to count, but there were a bunch of stones on that mountaintop). Their isolation was a tradition well by the point of the start of the movie.

The whole journey was about Moana reconnecting with her people's past. You could argue that's readable as an affirmation of tradition, but given that she breaks a longstanding one to do so I'd be more inclined to view it as a metaphor for growth and self-actualization. She wanted to explore before her people's livelihood is threatened and before she discovered their past.

Frozen had a story. We have Ana trying to bring her sister back and Elsa trying to cope with who she is and master her ice powers. Since Elsa is the main protagonist and her arc is mostly character development repeated, we can get a decent feature length story out of it.

Moana is just Get from point A to B. For fucks sake even Mad Max: Fury Road didn't try to hide how simple this plot is and just made the entire movie a car chase.

Moana screwed up a lot of points.

Mind you, Frozen did screw up too. Especially looking back at it now, it's easy to see the faults. But Frozen had a strong theme that people could associate with. Moana's theme was mainly "you need to set off to do what you feel is right" which is both something that less people can sympathize with, and something that didn't get touched on all that much once she left the island.

Sure, Moana did the right thing, but we kind of expect the protagonist to sit down and do the right thing. Especially when not doing so means everyone you know will die.

It's weird given they seem to have put all of their top talent on the film. Maybe had really major issues with the songs/screenplay.

Moana's changes both improved and hurt the film; the replaced songs were better ('More' was pretty good but the Maui legend song was terrible and Warrior face was boring) but they seemed to have put Maui further into the background in terms of story with the rewrite.
