PUNISHER STORYTIME
All this year I'll be storytiming Punisher comics, with at least one story per week. Most of the focus will be on pre-Ennis material, with probably a few Ennis era stories here or there and maybe possibly some post-Ennis era stuff.
This week we're reading the pinnacle of human achievement: The Punisher Armory, a massive 10-issue "guidebook" to The Punisher's equipment.
Formally trained technical illustrator Eliot R. Brown was Marvel's go-to guy in the 1980s and 1990s for any diagrams or blueprints or other world-building science-y looking shit that Marvel wanted to look extra authentic. In addition to stuff like The Iron Manual and X-Men Guide to the Mansion, he also did lots of the illustrations for The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe series and DC's Who's Who series, among other stuff like the Marvel Atlas and a metric fuckton of random backup pages in various superhero comics showcasing the characters' headquarters or vehicles or weapons or even maps of their home cities.
cont.

His most famous work was easily The Punisher Arsenal pages that ran in the backups of The Punisher War Journal, which were technical illustrations of irl weapons used by The Punisher, and included "Punisher War Journal" style "journal entries" from The Punisher's perspective where he'd break down the hardware and give his thoughts on them and sometimes tell some brief anecdote or make an in-character dry quip.
Around 1990 Marvel decided to compile The Punisher Arsenal into an extra-length comic issue called The Punisher Armory. They continued to publish new material in follow up issues of the title around twice per year for 10 issues total. There was originally supposed to be a parody issue named Not The Punisher Armory, which would have been written by Eliot R. Bown and Michael Golden and drawn by both of them along with other artists, but it was cancelled shortly into production due to Marvel's line-wide contraction following their second bankruptcy of the decade and no material was ever released (unless you count a mention in Marvel's "upcoming releases" thing they sent out to retailers around 1994 or 1995).
Today's storytime is of the entire 10 issue run of The Punisher Armory PLUS a few "extras" at the end (read: the original pages from the actual issues of the various Punisher ongoings including a handful that were never compiled for The Punisher Armory as well as the digital versions of the pages that were published during the Jim Lee era [the only ones available digitally] and a few random other Punisher pinups from the backups of his comics that relate to his equipment [if there's interest I might also post the "martial arts/training" shorts that were in a couple of the Annuals, since those are thematically similar]).
Anyway, this is gonna be a LONG storytime, so strap in. I'll probably break it up over 3 threads: 2 for The Punisher Armory, and 1 for the "extra" material.
