There are a couple of issues with having a gay character beyond religious issues. The kids on Sesame Street are fairly young so putting romantic/sexual attraction into the mix would be offputting in general, there isn't really a focus on the love lives of the adult cast, and likewise the Muppets. Basically adding a cast member that is gay would mean that them being gay would need to come up in a way that doesn't mesh well with the existing format. You could do it subtly but then you'd get flack from both the religious and the hardcore LGBT representation types. Being overt would still get you religious objections and you'd get flak for making the gay characters stand out for being gay. I'm pretty sure everyone would have problems with a gay Muppet.

tl;dr: No matter what you do someone will complain so it's less hassle to not bring it up. If they want gay people on Sesame Street they just use a gay celebrity guest star.
