Well, he did try to do that. He in fact did it. It wasn't until a few hours later than Ashi caught up wit him in the campfire and demanded to stick to him for a while longer until he could prove to her that Aku was evil.
While I believe in Jack's altruism, I think one of the reasons he kept her around was also because when he was with her he didn't suffer any more hallucinations.

How so? She slowly opened to the idea of Jack being sincere with him, and even then she demanded evidence. Then she traveled with him getting it and finally decided to side with Jack. After that, while she's looking for him she's hesitant to call him a friend, but she eventually does after seeing all the good he's done for the people of the world. I think it was well presented and realistic enough for a character like Ashi. For the 10 episodes they had, I think it was tightly written and worked out in the end.

I can see where you're coming from. But I think the romance is pretty believable as well. They both are considered attractive people in-universe, so physical attraction is obvious. But they've also gone through events in their lives, both before and after meeting, that are more intense an intimate than most people ever experience. That kind of bond could easily result in a romantic link.

Well, think about it this way. Jack has finally left his suicidal mindset. Ashi has finally buried the last remains of her past. They are now on their way to kill Aku. The future seems brighter for the both of them; their minds are on relative peace. For once, they aren't running for their lives. So, in this moment of peace, as brief as it is, they start paying attention to other things, such as each other, and they realize the feelings they are experiencing for each other. I personally believe that Jack realized how attracted he was to Ashi when he had finally regained balance, while Ashi realized he was into Jack when she saw how brightly he shone (metaphorically speaking) once he had regained hope and was back in his prime.

Also the characters really didn't even faced an aftermath of the struggle they had, for god's sake, Ashi killed her mother, Jack goes from "no hope mode" to "yeah let's kill aku" after a 50 year hiatus on 1 episode and Jack killed Ashi's sisters. So many interesting writing opportunities that we never see come up, instead we got a "we get sword" episode and a "now we fuck" episode back to back.

I disagree. Listen to the way he talks to Ashi after he's gotten the sword back. His voice is much smoother, much more calm. It's little, but we do see it.

Ashi killed her mother, and we've seen how she reacts to death, even of her closest ones. She still probably has the mindset of survival of the fittest, even if it's at a subconscious level. Despite being in Jack's side she has proven to be quite ruthless against people who try to hurt either her or Jack.
As for Jack, he was reminded by Ashi of all the people he's helped in the past, as well as the way he saved her. If he really thought there's no hope, why would he keep bothering helping people? He realizes that deep down he's still hopeful, even if he tries to extinguish it. He's a hero at heart.
And above all, you need to take in account the number of episodes. I am the first one to admit that yes, I would have loved having a longer season to fleshes up these ideas more. But they are still well written within the constrictions of their time limit as well as the story itself.

I believe that's what made him reevaluate going for the sword AFTER he defeated the Omen. What really stopped him from killing himself was when Ashi reveled that he hadn't killed the children.
