Some backstory: as many know, in 1968 Wonder Woman was completely revamped by Dennis O'Neil and Mike Sekowsky. She became a super spy, with no powers, who was trained in kung-fu. The Amazons were removed and Steve Trevor was killed off.
Now, don't let anyone tell you differently, because it's a great run, and was very well received at the time, despite a concept that seems bonkers in retrospect.
>>92345752
>(I promise this does not involve pregnancy)
Dropped.
>>92345793
How did they remove the Amazons?
However, feminist grand dragon Gloria Steinem visited the DC offices in 1972 to do a cover story on Wonder Woman for her magazine. Steinem had used Wonder Woman a lot in her earlier work as an example of an empowered woman.
But when she saw the new direction for Wonder Woman, she was totally appalled that they had removed her powers and demanded that they give them back.
The story goes that some executives who had basically no idea what was going on in the comics got upset about this and fired O'Neil, and hired long-time Wonder Woman writer Robert Kanigher back on to restore the status quo.
>>92345862
The Amazons decided they were sick of Earth and that they would ascend to the next dimension like Tolkein's elves. They told Diana she could come with them or stay, but if she stayed she would lose her powers.
>>92345884
>She has her back to me -- A perfect change to plug her before...
Oh, Clark won't let you
>>92345919
Wow! Did we get to see the next dimension in question? That sounds pretty out there.
A couple of interesting things came out of the new status quo restoration, to be fair, including the original Contest story that I posted before and the introduction of Nubia by Cary Bates.
But sales basically plummeted during this time, so DC was of course scrambling to come up with something. This story is the result of that, designed as a point where they would define Wonder Woman for the new era the same way they were doing with Batman and Superman at the time.
Of course, both this and Superman were total flops and back to the kid-focused direction shortly after.
>>92345938
Nah, it was just big shining light generic Heaven. The whole thing was very clearly pulled out of their ass and might as well have had all the Amazons getting on a bus and going on indefinite vacation.
We will be reading the Diana Prince era, sometimes called the I-Ching Era, or The NEW Wonder Woman, because it's legitimately some of her best stories.
>>92345979
The yellow dialogue box top left there is comics.jpg and I love it.
Today I found out the Ancient Greeks basically invented bras.
Oh, and I believe Gloria Steinem later recanted her criticism of the new direction. I'd have to look that up.
Fun fact: the overall plot of this arc was written by Mike Pasko, but various writers did the individual scripting duties.
>>92346039
Details?
Btw, something dumb I saw on Twitter
"Six different battle sounds"
INCLUDING SUCH HITS AS:
>severing of gorgon head
>impalement of Herculean soldier
>stabbing a minotaur in the spinal column as you ride him like horsey
>angry incoherent screaming
And more!
Quote from the front of the Golden Age omnibus that basically sums up my view of Wonder Woman:
>Strong, powerful, confident and brave, Wonder Woman was created to save the day not with violence, but with love and understanding
But that's enough butthurt for today
Another fun fact: the Comics Code expressly forbade any depiction of violence towards women until the 70's when it was slightly relaxed.
I'm actually not sure if it was OK with WOMEN committing violence against women, which might explain why Wonder Woman was always paired against any female villains in Justice League of America.
>>92346095
I needed to look up the whole Minoan bare-breasted thing for something and came across that the Greeks are (some of) the first peeps we know of who wore a breast-binding garment under clothes.
The Romans did too, explicitly for the purpose of making the breasts appear smaller and firmer (Romans thought big sloppy breasts were a sign of age and degeneration). But that's later.
>>92346158
I wonder if this is meant to be critical of the NEW Wonder Woman
In retrospect, O'Neil's "feminism" displayed in the run is really outdated even by 1968 standards, which he later admitted.
>>92346270
Intradasting.
Cavalier is one of those villains that got totally forgotten in the post-Watchmen era.
And of course Simone is responsible for bringing him back
If you remember yesterday I said Wonder Woman could be a playa who doesn't tie herself to one man permanently, what inspired that was how many love interests she has in the O'Neil era.
It's like Bond girls but with men. She banged a different dude like every issue. Usually they died later.

>>92345951
Why is there not a Wonder Woman Magical Girl Anime?
Cary Bates was also scripting The Flash at this time, IIRC.
And Len Wein was on Justice League of America, which is why he wrote the last issue I imagine.

>>92347123
The size change along with the transformation is pretty neat. And yeah, Diana does have a waspish figure and is pretty stacked (more noticeable out of the WW costume here maybe).
Also >>92347093 >>92346039 immersion RUINED. How can I really believe in this magical society of Amazons now?
Fun fact: both the United States and Russia have had uncontrollable robot defense systems in place since the 1950's.
However in 2005, the Russian government dismantled their robots for parts to fill the increasing demand for PCs to play Dota 2.

When I first got into DC with the New 52, the two characters I was super into were Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and I wanted to dig into the pasts of both of them.
Ultimately I got hooked on Wonder Woman and never got around to reading most of Aquaman, except some 70's stories with Aqualad.
But in the alternate timeline where I read Aquaman instead, Texas Anon is storytiming Aquaman
>>92347610
Also no size-changing here, maybe just because it's a different artist
Ang Lee's Hulk was based on this scene
Pretty sure this random Brit is the Monocle
Hey, both Cavalier and Monocle were in Manhunter, the very arc that I posted!
>>92347623
I was hoping we'd get a shot with the diplomat again to do a comparison. She was about a head shorter when not transformed. I really like the idea of the size change being a part of the transformation, it makes the secret identity seem a lot more legit.

>>92348068
Actually no. Honestly, I thought it was kind of boring, like Inquisition. There's something about this Frostbite engine that really doesn't work.
Also, the characters feel really... well, Bioware, but in a pretty obnoxious, unoriginal way.

Ha! Another stealth mini. Marvel just cancelled Black Panther & the Crew after 2 issues were released. It will now end at #6.
Sorry, I know this isn't the JSA thread, but I just had to laugh
>>92348291
Yeah that's what I was afraid of.
I want something like the original Mass Effect, not just Mass Effect 2: Andromeda
64 Page Giant, where 10 pages are just ads and one is Batman shilling Twinkies
Also a reprint of some Golden Age issues, including the Duke of Deception's first appearance, Diana getting the name "Diana Prince" from some random nurse who happens to look just like her, and Etta Candy being spanked by a medical professional.
>>92348300
I figured. A spinoff of an already low-selling title is not exactly a genius idea for an ongoing.
>>92348320
What did you like most about the first one?
>to see if I'm straight
Straight...as an arrow
>>92348467
Felt a lot like Star Trek. Not very action heavy. Lots of exploring random planets and stumbling upon quests.
When there WAS combat it felt a lot more tactical than just "take cover and play whack-a-mole with enemies"
>>92348320
The leveling up system isn't as butchered as ME2's, to be fair. It's somewhat more in-depth, not as much as the first game, but you're not likely to get that kind of customization in a AAA game again, so you take what you can.
>>92348541
>so you take what you can
That's the thing, I have little to no interest in most modern games because of that.
Kind of like with comics there's such a huge amount of great stuff from the past I've never played it can keep me occupied. And movies.
I hate to be that pretentious twat who goes "Oh everything USED to be better!" but it kind of really did.
I can still play Baldur's Gate 2 and get enjoyment out of it.
>>92348521
Just kinda curious because I felt quite a big tonal shift even from ME > ME2. I haven't played Andromeda at all.If I can shill I've been playing this historical RPG game recently called Expeditions: Vikings and have really enjoyed it. If you liked any of the old turn-based isometric games or Dragon Age Origins and such I think it's well worth playing. It's not an AAA title and it is unpolished but I really appreciate the intent in so many of the story choices the devs have made; it's appealed to me in a big way.
>>92348626
>It's not an AAA title and it is unpolished
See, that appeals to me because they're making it for a specific audience rather than just shooting for mass audiences.
I'm fine with less polished, more buggy and kind of cheap looking games if they really stay true to a certain vision and make a game for a more niche audience.
Hey look, those eskimos are back
The Museum of Natural History has this huge wooly mammoth exhibit that is seriously one of the most influential things of my childhood.

Also technically Diana is the only one who can untie her own lasso
>>92349206
Never mind, they explain it here
Ya know what grinds my gears? When people ask what Wonder Woman's "weakness" is.
Sure, she had this weakness back then with the binding. But in the modern day no-one but Superman has a weakness. Just a really strange concept to get hung up about.
Though maybe that's because it's not always clear exactly how her durability works.

>>92350976
Her 70's hair is basically the model for her current styles for the last ten years
>>92351003
Yeah, but they tend to draw her hair way messier these days. 70's Diana had style.
Unrelated to this comic: I don't get why they didn't use Paula von Gunther in the movie. She was Diana'sa archnemesis during the WWII years and is like the one villain that basically can't work outside that setting.
Maybe they thought having a Nazi occult scientist would be too similar to Red Skull.

>>92353018
>Well, her calling the Greeks "her people" isn't quite right because the Amazons did not live in Greece and their civilization was separate, and of course they're ethnically completely different.
Please explain further.
>>92353105
Well, the Amazons rose out of the Black Sea (sometimes also just a lake near the Black Sea), and settled here, on the northern tip of Turkey.
Throughout time, women get killed before their time. These women's souls don't go to Hades but get trapped in a limbo beneath it called the Well of Souls.
The gods, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Hestia and Hermes took these souls and put them in the clay at the bottom of the sea, where they formed into the Amazons and rose to the surface.
The first Amazon to reach the surface was Hippolyte, whose soul is the very first human woman murdered before her time.
This is why every Amazon looks ethnically completely different. There are black, Asian, Greek and Middle Eastern Amazons.
So though the Amazons took drew culturally from the Greeks in terms of the arts, their society was diametrically opposed to ones like Sparta and Troy.
>>92352806
Thank you.
