Don't worry. Gravity Falls it's pretty clear a lot of it was just being made up as they went along, or was never intended to be anything but a mystery. In Steven Universe, it's pretty clear they've got the Gem culture worked out, and are giving it to us in bits and dribbles. If you're hoping for some kind of fantastically complex or well-written resolution to it all, you'll be disappointed, but there's definitely a solid backstory already written.

It's mainly a way to keep lars out of serious danger and bring the two of them closer. Lars seems to able to handle himself well enough with that small red eye drone but if there's a gem or something bigger then a small drone trying to kill them a lars/steven fusion would be the easiest way for lars to not be dead weight in the fight.
