Good evening owls of /co/,

it's time
>>
>>92324783
so what did I miss other than the goddamn laugh riot of woke comics twitter defending J*de T*rr*r?

also we digital scans now, not sure how I feel yet
>>
What's the funniest thing that happened since we last met? The Button beating Secret Empire?
>>
>>92324809
>>so what did I miss other than the goddamn laugh riot of woke comics twitter defending J*de T*rr*r?
Huh?
>>
>>92324817
There was also "We hate Secret Empire so much we're going to further try to indicate that the writer is a Nazi", I saw that

this is pretty meta, lol
>>
>>92324857
I didn't, can you link or give me something to search?
>>
>>92324809
The TK preview/interview of Mister Miracle looked good but goddamn King's gonna be an easy guy to parody.
>>
>>92324843
As best I can tell, Mark Waid posted JT's real last name on Facebook. This was denounced as doxxing, despite no phone numbers/addresses being posted, and JT having used his full name in conjunction with comics stuff in the past. Comment ensue such as

>It feels like another GG is brewing except the terrorizers are professionals in the industry

>The revelation of the identity behind a pen name without the owner's permission is an act of violence. Do not let Waid slide on this.

>>92324872
https://amazingcavalieri.blogspot.ca/2017/05/a-primer-on-nick-spencers-shitty.html

And then Rich the Leech did a piece which the writer of the above accused of being primarily sourced from Nicky that was contextualizing Cincinnati politics of the time

I'll spare you my hot take unless you want it?

Thought of you, OP.
>>
Hi thread! Workposting sucks

>>92324809

Oh my god do I want to know? That dude sucks, he makes bleedingcool a worse place somehow.
Is that what I saw some of comics twitter freaking about then? I only saw reactions that are basically that gif from Community going into the room on fire
>>
>>92324817
Meh, shitty gimmick+shitty crossover watchmen shit. But I'll take it if it makes Spencer cry.
>>
>>92324909
I'm here for FUCKING KANTO but it better have some tonal range, you know?

>>92324924
<3 <3 <3

opera with all high voices does get a bit monotonous and everything is improved by a six-and-a-half-foot-tall Finnish bass
>>
>>92324857

That was some messed up character assassination shit going around.

Meanwhile creeps like Brian Wood...
>>
Oh and Batfandom cried about Dick getting an Elseworlds where he kills people
>>
>>92324915
>I'll spare you my hot take unless you want it?
Sure, hit me up.

I actually went looking at some of Nick Spencer's old career stuff a while back, like both when he was a politician and involved with a nightclub. He did catch some flak even back then similar to what he gets now; I wonder if what I read was by the same author as this is. Need to go look.
>>
>>92324997
TBF I would be much more there for the synthy New Order.
>>
>>92324953

I mean Scott and Barda is ultimately a great positive love story.

Also are we going to read the 80s mr miracle series next now?
>>
>>92324997
That's going to get some serious fandom mileage, I can tell you now. The cries of racism already are sweet pure Discourse Outrage

>>92324990
It's like, if you're going to judge most people on mid-2000s political opinions by current standards, you're going to end up calling everyone left of and including the socialists irredeemable scum and come the fuck on

>>92325004
basically that I'm not going to overextrapolate from a local politics scene I don't know shit about combined with "this is how you lose coalitions"
>>
>>92324997
I just thinks it's a shitty idea "Nightwing: Civil War" and it's going to be a predictable and boring story. I also don't like seeing a mediocre writer that had a crappy run on a characetr return to that character. I would have preferred it if DC had given someone else a mini with that artist instead. People always say Rebirth is for the big names and minis are for the niche stuff. Well, Nightwing ain't niche.
>>
>>92325064
it does seem appropriate to get around to it
>>
>>92325099
Gotta see how much $$$ the Injustice audience is really worth.
>>
>>92325099
Oh, I think it looks like warm piss at best and have no personal interest, but I'm here for fandom getting mad about it

What was good this week?
>>
>>92325099
I do wish it was someone other than Higgins but I don't expect it to be horrible I guess.
>>
>>92324997
It's what they deserve
>>
>>92325138
Bug was fantastic

New Super-Man and Batman '66 Meets Wonder Woman '77 were uncharacteristically boring and obviously rushed, real shame.

Wonder Woman itself was pretty good IMO.
>>
>>92324809
The fucking "It doesn't matter who JT is" argument, though.
>>
>>92325138

>>
>>92325151
Eh, the concept is pretty bad and imo Higgins isn't a good enough writer to do a "bad idea, good execution" kind of story
>>
>>92325180
>fantastic
Maybe we read different things? it was kind...bad. It tried to be witty and funny with the dialogue but failed. It tried to be deep with the teddy bear and failed. Sandman "stole the show" and was much more interesting than Forager.
>>
>>92324909
That entire thread was ruined by batfags crying about King's run.
>>
>>92325199
How can it settle down when it's about to be cancelled?
>>
>>92325194
Honestly I view connecting JT to who he has been as like finding out that sweet ol' B*njanun is RH. You can still like them and their work, but it's self-preservation for interactions.
>>
>>92325223
:(
>>
>>92325180
I think the comments in the New Super-Man storytime that Yang is trying to finish up storylines as quickly as possible before the series is cancelled are probably correct.

Yeah doesn't get much better than that

also EVS said kill yourself to somebody and everybody flipped out, he deleted his twitter
>>
>>92325227
Also, trollbait of the day:

Does this mean that both Danny Rand and America Chavez are transracial adoptees? Is there a problematic-o-meter to test out here?
>>
>>92325257
I feel so alienated from all that because I watched like two SJ episodes during the original run and just never gave a shit.
>>
>>92325241
I wonder what book Yang is gonna be on with New Super Man is cancelled

Cause by the time it ends it's probably gonna be time for wave 3 of rebirth or some event minis or whatever
>>
>>92324997
I had a giggle at CBR's "DICK KILLS THE DCU" headline while Higgins is busy telling people Dick doesn't kill anybody
>>
>>92325199
It's obvious they're having to rush, they crammed Wonder-Woman's entire arc into basically one issue and then we're getting the prototype Super-Man next issue who was the one who kicked off the whole series, so it kinda feels like it's endgame time.

>>92325218
I saw a lot of divisive opinions in the thread, so I guess it's one of those love it or hate it things.
>>
>>92324909
King is such a one-trick pony. This reads exactly like Omega Men already.

I bet he's just butthurt because of Steranko.
>>
>>92324809
I like these. Allred's style works much better with clean digital rendering, I think.
>>
>>92325241

>>
>>92325270
>Does this mean that both Danny Rand and America Chavez are transracial adoptees?
Well, yeah. How is that trollbait?
>>
>>92325257
I wish they could have contained that shit. At one point there was like 30-40 threads at one time. I'd minimize them all, go back to the first page and there'd be 3 more created in the last 2 seconds.
>>
>>92325296
You're not wrong but at the same time I still like it.
>>
>>92325222
But that's every Tom King thread. I mean, it's definitely possibly to become indulgent in a style of writing - King skirts that line pretty hard at times.

>>92325241
It makes sense because he has a somewhat bigger goal than just finishing up the book, right? It's heading to (and is already) a kind of redefinition of what China's like in the DC universe.

I get why he wants to get there.
>>
>>92325283
He's not DC exclusive, you know? He'll probably do some creator owned stuff.
>>
>>92325268
We need to keep a list of people who killed their twitter. This year alone has Waid and EVS
>>
>>92325257
There were some baaaad Wonder Woman threads the last couple days, holy shit.

Which I find a little surprising because I was seeing uncharacteristically positive reaction to the latest Wonder Woman trailer compared to all the previous ones.
>>
>>92325307
because one of these things is clearly okay and the other is not and it's not my job to educate you, shitlord!

(in case this isn't obvious, I'm joking, here--I want to know if there was any interesting reaction out in the wider world to that backstory explanation, other than "Where's the fucking Mexican flag then?")
>>
>>92325270
The America thing is pretty literal cultural appropriation, lol

>>92325296
maybe, but it's a good trick

I'm digging the Mister Miracle preview
>>
I don't know the deal with Naziwing but Dicks superpower is that he's friends with everyone! Hard circle to square

>>92325335

Movies coming so get ready
>>
>>92324997
Has Higgins gotten harassed yet?

>>92325288
Yeah I saw one interaction where it was basically
>I CAN'T BELIEVE DC IS DOING A BOOK WHERE DICK KILLS PEOPLE
>actually higgins says he isn't going to kill anybody
>But HOW is that TRUE when Dick is KILLING people
>but he's not because the writer said he's not
>but he IS

like the preview and concept are shit but if the writer says so it's probably true
>>
Oh and funniest thing I've seen in weeks:

https://twitter.com/Marvel/status/863148527547027457
>>
>>92325292
I've only seen empty praise for it, nothing specific. So basically Allred fanboys gushing. I really wish he'd work with a great writer again, love his art but... the existence of Surfer Who bothers me greatly.
>>
>>92325341
Also because there's a huge and ongoing shitstorm in the academic philosophy community over an article about transracial and transgender, so this hitting at the same time made me laugh

>>92325346
it is! it's kind of fascinating, because you could make an argument about adoption being a positive, or you could do a more dismissive reading of her as appropriative cultural tourist
>>
>>92325270
There is no difference. Stranded kid being taken in by people.

>>92325367
>Has Higgins gotten harassed yet?

A little but he damage controlled pretty quickly and made sure people knew Dick wasn't being fascist or anything and that it wasn't canon. I don't know if they're still going on.
>>
>>92325270
Not sure how to feel about that. It's wrapped up, finally, but eh? I think what might have been nicer would be to root it to a specific person, like she finds the people who might have been her moms (or some other relative) on Earth. You could have gotten some nice conflict and relationships and emotions out of that.

It just being lol, Latinx people feels kinda skipped over. There's totally a flashback story there but it's a smaller and different PoV story to any that MAC's been in so far. And we didn't really get it.

Ewing writing MAC out of Ultimates 2 was hilarious btw.
>>
>>92325369

It just doesn't read ANYTHING like how Mister Miracle should be. And no, I'm not saying you can't mix up stuff when reinventing a character, but this reads so... horribly detached from what Kirby was doing, and the Game of Thrones comparison did not do it any favors.
>>
>>92324857

>>
>>92325438
>It just doesn't read ANYTHING like how Mister Miracle should be
As if you'd know. Shut the fuck up, you don't own the characetrs. The biggest problem is that I've seen Gerards(as well as Allred) gush more over Cosmic Odyssey and from that preview we're getting stupid, boring douchy Orion instead of Kirby's version. It pisses me off that these people can't properly do these characters justice and instead opts for other hackier versions.
Anyway, we've had plenty of wacky Mr. Miracle. This is a welcome change.
>>
>>92325534
Tom King should write a Black Terror book.

>>92325506
They and that whole situation is basically gender-inverted waifu faggotry. The fact that many of them blatantly self insert as Babs, which is why they hate every other woman who is on the same panel as him, just reinforces the unironic husbando faggotry.

Like I'm surprised none of them burned copies of Grayson and wont do it to the new mini.

>>
>>92325615
The arc is easy to see (the Black Terror is ultimately broken on the wheel of his own horrific actions, but Tim is a true monster - but did the Black Terror create that monster?) but I'd read it. Just a regular ole PTSD sponge of a comic. Get it out, Tom. Maybe you can write something different after.
>>
>>92325662
you gotta be careful with the kind of repetition that's built for a format where you control time more expressly (film, opera), because on the page it's too easy to gloss quickly
>>
>>92325578
>As if you'd know. Shut the fuck up, you don't own the characetrs.
I don't have to own them to know what kind of tones fit them. It's like if someone said "Superman shouldn't be Punisher" and someone replied "shut up, you don't own Superman so what do you know??", sounds just as obtuse.

>Anyway, we've had plenty of wacky Mr. Miracle. This is a welcome change.
Not really. What have we had of Mister Miracle, really? A somewhat wacky adventure series by Kirby, a comedic series by DeMatteis, a forgettable series by whoeverthefuck in the 90's, a high concept miniseries by Morrison... I'm not sure where you're getting this idea that Mister Miracle has been "wacky" for almost half a century.

that was a good discussion with Lieber and others, yeah. It's mostly that it just can't be 12 issues of grid, because MM has to escape and it reminds me so much of an opera situation I can't explain without a ridiculous tl;dr no one's gonna get :|

>>92325861
So, I'll try. There's this director Robert Wilson, who's famous for his incredibly slow, abstracted, geometric shapes, stylized movement style. I saw the (in)famous Lohengrin, and I kept wanting, at some climactic moment, for the style to break--but it never does.
>>
>>92325651
That thread seems like a pretty fair evaluation. The Ultimates threads do become pure wank once all the hypercrisis fags get on board. I think the FabNic comparison is a really good one.

>>92325907
(I also feel that when the Wilson style works it works very well, and it's 100% a part of the deep concept of Einstein on the Beach, but I also largely feel that he forces every work into the same box)

>>92325930
FabNic's better IME at keeping the plot kudzu'ing along, though

That's actually the most interesting opera style I've heard of.

I've always really hated traditional theater, then I saw Hair a few weeks ago and it got me obsessed with plays with kinda abstract stories that can only be done in a theater.

I can kind of buy it intended as an intimidation tactic, which is why Barda calls him out on his shit immediately. Might need full context in any case.

You can't actually treat it as background music, which is much of what intrigues me--you'd think you can with the repetitive structures, but it doesn't work that way

hey, how is Orlando JLA?
>>
>>92326428
And? It was real heavy on exposition. You should NEVER have your character describe what is happening on the panel, we can clearly see it for ourselves. As a writer you shouldn't be afraid of leaving some pages empty.

Really bad.

>>92326663

>>
>>92326663
Gonna chime in and say someone mentioned Under Siege as a wordy comic in comparison to Black Bolt last thread and while Under Siege does have words for effect plenty of those sequences are pure efficiency. Like right at the start when the uniform goes loco: you *need* the description because they only have four panels to play with. That's a world away from Ward's art on Black Bolt.

Anyway, at the end of the day I like the character and you don't, and you firing diarrhea everywhere is not going to change anyone's mind, and people explaining "why" they like a character won't change yours. All you can do is read some comics, and if you like him, cool, if you don't, cool.
