Whatever happened to Lux Bonteri after the Clone Wars? He must've maintained connections with Saw, and probably even financed him shortly after the formation of the Empire. Lux is also probably dead though, and would've shown up in the Rouge One rebel council if he were still a senator.

Furthermore, you don't need a majority of the planets to turn the tide in the war. Most of them aren't powerful or useful whatsoever. From a brief peek at the Wook, it looks like there are only a few thousand senators, which means there's only a few thousand systems that really matter at all.

You think, if Maul backed down after he figured out Kenobi's reasons for staying on Tatooine, would Ben have let him go with that knowledge?
>>
>>92333361
Honestly, I don't think he would. Once he figured it out, that was Ben's "welp, gotta do this" moment.
>>
>>92333251
Pretty much, in the comics Luke's been having a crisis of confidence since the very first issue where he very briefly crossed blades with Vader. And by briefly I mean "got his ass handed to him after Vader refused to give a singular fuck about him 'killing' Luke's father"
It does cheapen the running off in E5, but it does help explain why Leia and Han aren't overtly concerned about Luke so much, he's done this kind of shit before
>>92333361
I very much doubt it. There's a reason Obi Wan drew his lightsaber first. Equally, there's a reason Maul goaded Ben with the reveal he knows about Obi-Wan's mission. He wanted that fight.
I'm honestly not sure if he even wanted to win it.
>>
>>92333430
>I'm honestly not sure if he even wanted to win it.
I think he did, but at the same time he was so tired of his shitty life that he was pretty okay with losing.
>>
>>92333430
>I'm honestly not sure if he even wanted to win it.
He did. Remember, he still referred to Ezra as his apprentice and said see you soon.
>>
>>92333493
I can see that, and it would certainly explain why he was so sloppy as to try the exact same trick he'd pulled against Qui-Gonn back in the day
Although I do have to wonder what Maul's plan was after that fight. Was it really just a coin toss for him, a "if I win this that means there's still a chance for MY revenge, and if I die I had already lost anyway"?
>>
>>92333540
He's not terribly good at planning (despite numerous attempts) so I don't think he really did have a plan. He wanted the gratification of killing Kenobi, but afterward I assume he'd just go back to begging Ezra to be his friend. He already seemed to have given up on getting direct revenge against Sidious, so I don't think he'd go back to that.
>>
>>92333540
>Although I do have to wonder what Maul's plan was after that fight. Was it really just a coin toss for him, a "if I win this that means there's still a chance for MY revenge, and if I die I had already lost anyway"?
It was basically this. He wanted to tie up this unfinished business left over from the Clone Wars, and if he succeeded he'd still be able to try for his own revenge

Okay so I've watched Clone Wars over and over and over again... and I have a question. One that I believe I know the answer to but just want some reassurance.

After Yoda's vision on Dagobah did he for sure know that the Jedi were doomed? Did he know the Clones would turn?

Or did he look at it like Luke's vision where he could change the outcome?

I mean Qui-Gon made it pretty damn clear that the end was coming.

And if he did know all of this why did he not say anything?

RED LEADER! WE CAN'T TAKE MUCH MORE!
>>
>>92334065
I think he thought he could affect the outcome, or he just believed the vision was a test of his resolve or something
Besides, what could he have said? "Some fucked up shit, have I seen. Stay the fuck away from clones, we must"?
The council were already concerned he was losing his grip due to his age, and if he suggested unilaterally pulling out of the Republic's war effort at such a crucial stage they would have just taken his concerns onboard and just be slightly more paranoid before the Clones turned on them
>>
>>92334138
It would explain his flippant treatment of Anakin in Revenge of the Sith though.
>>
>>92334065

I figured he knew the clones would turn on the Jedi, but they show clearly that the Jedi Council would doubt him because the source of his knowledge is against their teachings (force ghosts).

So Yoda couldn't really do much except be ready at the time to act, which he was, then he went to kill Sidious, but failed, however his vision quest told him there was a backup plan in the form of Luke so he knew what to do afterwards. IIRC I think he and Obi-Wan also altered the Jedi Temple beacon to warn any surviving Jedi to run and hide rather than return to the Temple, so that is also a thing he was able to do.
>>
>>92334151
I'm trying to remember the vision, was it just "the clones will turn on you and some bad shit will go down at the temple" or was it more specific than that?
Because you do have to take into account that we, obviously, know the future that's hinting at so we draw the conclusion that Anakin is responsible, whereas Yoda has no idea and just thinks its a manifestation of his own worst nightmare or some shit.
>>
>>92334193
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdWIOiOHXNs
>>
>>92334178
>IIRC I think he and Obi-Wan also altered the Jedi Temple beacon to warn any surviving Jedi to run and hide rather than return to the Temple
That happens in Revenge though, shortly after Obi returns to the Temple and finds the recording of the massacre. He then sends out a message to all Jedi holocrons that the Temple has fallen and that any surviving Jedi should not obey the recall signal and instead hide and wait out whatever is happening
>>
>>92334193
It shows the Jedi running into to fight clones, then cuts to sheep cutting down the Jedi from the confrontation in RotS. It shows Mace Windu getting electrocuted, and then Shaka Ti getting stabbed by Anakins lightsaber.

So he even knew a Jedi would turn
>>
>>92334229

Yeah that's what I mean. Yoda was ready for his clones to betray him since he didn't get caught off-guard like everyone else, then immediately goes to the Temple and changes the message. If he'd try to change the message before Order 66 people would have noticed, I think.
>>
>>92334226
Ah OK, thanks for the link, I was getting it confused with the visions of the sacked Temple he saw on Korriban
Anyway, seeing that I think the big hurdle Yoda would have is how clearly influenced by the Dark Side that vision was. All he saw was the Jedi attacking some clone looking soldiers, then just a series of betrayals all linked to Sidious. Its hardly conclusive and comes from a deeply dubious source. Even if Yoda himself was convinced, there's very little chance he could convince the council even with his reputation preceding him
>>
I think the final vision/magical mind battle thing in the arc is also pretty important:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctN5s8z3E8E

If you assume there's some symbolism and meaning in it and it's not just an illusion I think the message is that Yoda and the Jedi cannot defeat Sidious conventionally, there is no way out.

Though it's also Sidious trying to break Yoda, so I guess you can interpret it as him clouding things further. If Yoda believed it to be a vision he'd be more hesitant about a military solution.

When they were first in the cinema maybe, but the problem is that as those movies get older those effects start showing their age more and more
That's why they also did some great makeup effects for Orcs and Uruk Hai in LOTR, if you've previously seen real versions of the CGI ones your brain is far more likely to trick you and fill in the blanks with the real ones rather than having to rely wholly on the CGI to fool you
>>
>>92334822
>that's why force awakens went out to have as little cgi as possible
Are you retarded enough to believe in marketing? The film was mostly used with digital effects. The attack on Starkiller, all shots of the finalizier, the Rafters... are you pulling my chain, anon? Because it's not working.

>That's why they also did some great makeup effects for Orcs and Uruk Hai in LOTR, if you've previously seen real versions of the CGI ones your brain is far more likely to trick you and fill in the blanks
[citation needed]
The LOTR movies had dated just like Star Wars. The Wargs, Eagles, Trolls, battle shots look like early 00's CG.
>>
>>92334891
I'm not talking about the stuff you need CGI to do because model work for Eagles and the Trolls would be a COLOSSAL pain in the ass for an objectively worse return (there is a reason studios flocked to CG after all) but doing EVERY SINGLE CLONE in CG was a step too far. Having a few physical suits made, even just for the scenes where its just clones talking to the Jedi, would have been honestly cheaper and better from a "fooling the audience" perspective
Heavy use of CGI isn't a problem, using it for basic fucking shit where you don't have to is

And this displays the problem with the rathtar design.

There are two types of Star Wars beasts, hidden and free-standing. With hidden monsters, like the dianoga, the sarlacc, and the Dagobah swamp monster that eats R2, you have a lot of freedom to just throw random features all over the place, because the part of the creature you see doesn't need to be believable. The implication is that all you see is merely a small part of a much larger horror you can only imagine.

Free-standing beasts will be seen in their entirety, and must be designed with more care. Such beasts need a mix of realistic elements and fantastical. This is why the acklay is like a giant crab monster. This is why the nexu is feline. This is why the reek is like a bull mixed with a rhinoceros. And of course, it's why the rancor is like a mutated naked mole rat.

The rathtar's design simply does not look like something that would ever venture out of the sea. Its closest visual resemblance among other free-standing monsters of the movies is the opee sea killer, a decidedly aquatic terror. Even among monsters in The Clone Wars, the free-standing monster with the closest resemblance to a rathtar is the blixus (the squid from The Clone Wars Zygerrian arc). But both the blixus and the opee sea killer have recognizable body parts and segments, design elements that make some vague amount of sense with our understanding of earth life, making for something all the scarier because of its mix of the familiar and the strange and new.

What is a rathtar? A meatball with teeth, tentacles, and really bad herpes. That's not scary.
>>
>>92335016
It has a huge creep factor with that combination of tentacles, eyes and maw. It honestly makes my skin crawl when I look at it, like something lovecraftian.
>>
>>92323902

In Attack of the Clones it's pretty obvious. The lighting is the giveaway for the clones; the actors in the Geonosis arena scenes aren't lit at quite the same angles as the inserted stuff. It's pretty clumsy, but it was 2002, so honestly it's par for the course and people are getting more upset than they should be.

Revenge of the Sith did a much better job getting everything right. ROTS's effects mostly hold up very well even today. The only exceptions I can think of are scenes where they briefly digitized the actors, like Dooku's flip, or Sidious's spin. That's mostly because 2005 CG wasn't good enough to do cloth or human flesh quite right yet.

>The rathtar's design simply does not look like something that would ever venture out of the sea
Which is why it freaks people out (eg this guy >>92335061)
Something that looks like it DOES NOT BELONG is a lot scarier than just a giant cat with a big mouth. Plus the arena creatures were designed for a flat open plain as they attacked the heroes, the Rathtar was designed to dominate an enclosed industrial space where they could just barrel down the tight corridors eating everyone they came across
>>92335073
I will say this for ROTS, the shots of the clones helmets, especially when they tell Bail to piss off, look incredibly realistic even today.
But therein lies the rub, "even today" is acceptable but far from ideal. Years from now people will go back and watch those movies with their kids, and they will see right through those effects because we've improved so much since then. It put an expiration date on the magic of Star Wars, and in the case of the clones where they didn't have to its just sad
>>
>>92335016
I'd point out that we never get a clean shot of a Rathtar, they're all rolling around grabbing shit with their tentacles and eating people alive during that entire sequence
The only clean shot we have, and the one that frankly stole a lot of the mystery from them, is one picture of a Rathtar in the TFA visual dictionary

>like something lovecraftian

It would be very lazy by Lovecraft's standards. And we're talking about a guy who regularly refrained from describing monsters except in the roughest, vaguest outline.

A rathtar is just a big bag of meat on tentacles with a toothy maw at the front. That's really it. Its entire method of locomotion is kind of unbelievable; rolling is not effective without a slope to gather some momentum, and pulling your body along on those thin tentacles doesn't work out well on land. It's like it was specifically designed specifically for the "Harrison Ford is running away from a boulder just like Indiana Jones!" joke and otherwise just needed to be able to grab Finn and carry him around. It's not designed like a beast that could actually plausibly exist as a fantastically creature on some distant rim world like every other free-standing monster is; it's just a gimmick for one scene.

Lovecraft would probably be far more impressed by the Acklay. If we want to bring science into the mix, the Acklay is another creature that should not be -- those spindly legs can't possibly support its weight by the laws of real physics. But it at least makes visual sense: it has recognizable body parts with a semi-familiar distribution, a clear means of locomotion, massive and threatening natural weapons, and a "giant bug-crab" aesthetic that plays into primal fears of real-world arthropods.

TL;DR: you're wrong, rathtars suck ass.

Honestly, the part where they roll towards Han tells you everything you need to know at a glance. You see the mouth come back around. It's not like the movie tries to act like there's a whole bunch of the creature you're not seeing. It's just a meatball with tentacles and teeth.

As if that wasn't bad enough, we also get this shot in the movie, pic related. That's the rathtar glomming onto the Falcon's cockpit. A quick glimpse tells you everything you need to know.

Shit, this isn't even as scary as the vixus from The Clone Wars Umbara arc, and the vixus was just a maw with tentacles planted in the ground. Couldn't even move. TCW used the lighting of Umbara to great effect, as well as the fact that the vixus was planted in the ground. It not only allowed the vixus to be a surprise whenever someone stumbled into one, but also allowed it to be scary, because of the implication that what you are seeing above ground is just a part of a much larger monster below.
>>
>>92335222
Well, you dont have to be snooty about it, sport. All I'm saying is that rathars are creepy creatures and I would not want to be locked with one of them in a tight space. Believability has nothing to do with it. Nor should it, I think.

Nexu kinda lost their scare factor after a female friend of mine watched E2 with me, saw it and squealed how cute it is and that she wants one as a pet.

Maybe I should stop inviting people to watch SW. They always ruin some part of it for me. Just like /swco/.

>Believability has nothing to do with it. Nor should it, I think.

But it's actually important if you're the kind of person who wants to engage with this setting as a living, breathing universe.

The rathtars work fine if all you want is "oh no it's a scary monster for one scene in one movie". They kill a bunch of people, they haul Finn around without eating or even hurting him for no clear reason, they give Rey a chance to save the day (for neither the first nor the last time in this movie), yay.

When it comes to engaging with Star Wars as a larger saga, though, a certain degree of plausibility needs to enter the picture, not for some scientific reason but just to make the world "make sense" for the story, the same way Grendel "makes sense" in Beowulf. When you're presented with a creature like the rathtars, it's scary in the moment because it has these scary attributes, but it loses all of that the moment you try to actually think about it, and that's actually important if you're going to use them in a new story story going forward.

And it's a damn shame, because Abrams actually had an interesting design in Cloverfield. The Cloverfield monster is scary AND makes visual sense. It's something that should not be, but COULD be, which is much scarier than something that should not and could not be. But when it came to the rathtars, Abrams seems to have just thrown up his hands.

Even if the nexu disappointed in the long run, it had the best entrance. It was a perfect rule of three setup.

Reek strides out, proud.

Acklay comes out, annoyed, gets shocked, screams at his tormentor but complies.

Nexu comes out, clearly ready to kill something RIGHT NOW, Geonosian guard shocks it, Nexu pounces and kills the son of a bitch.

It's the sort of scene you'd see in Flash Gordon, played completely straight, in classic Lucas style.
>>
>>92335631

I agree that the nexu was the most murderous of the three. It kept attacking Padmé even though she had the high ground.
The acklay had to be guided to Obi-wan, but after that, it was pretty enthusiastic.
The reek, on the other hand, quickly lost interest in Anakin.

Makes me wonder how these kinds of executions went in real life.
>>
>>92335710

Well, the acklay and the nexu were both clearly predators.

The reek, though dangerous, was very obviously an herbivore. Its teeth weren't sharp. It had horns and hooves. All its natural weapons were defensive.

I wouldn't want to encounter a mother reek near its young, but Anakin was fighting an animal that didn't really want to fight him either.

>that's why force awakens went out to have as little cgi as possible
Ironically, TFA used far more CGI than any of the previous Star Wars films combined.
>>
>>92336270
"as possible" is a highly deceptive term
TFA did use more CGI than some previous Star Wars films, but it was on shots that needed CGI. Taking your example for instance, that trooper gets wiped out by an X-wing about two frames ahead of that moment, so you're better off just using a CG trooper than faffing about with wires and compositing a stunt man into the shot. As for the rest of it, its not like they had the time to build an entire destroyed castle set AND then blow it all up for the purposes of filming
The prequels, by comparison, used CG when they had other options available. That's what people mean when they say "TFA used as little CGI AS POSSIBLE", they're comparing it to the prequels which used CG when they honestly didn't need to
>>
>>92336270
It's telling how they've dropped the practical effects meme in TLJ's marketing. Not once through the whole Celebration have we heard how "real" and "tangible" Rian supposedly wants to make the movie feel.

The sooner we move from the buzzwords cultivated to appease the casual audience, the sooner making actual good SW movies, whatever shape and form they might be, will become the primary focus again. I like TFA itself, but I hate the restrictive poseur movement in "geek culture" that it served. Too many of the film's flaws directly arise from it.

The more I think about it, the more a mistake JJ getting the job feels. >but it was on shots that needed CGI
Really? What about the scene with Han and Ren's confrontation? Or the room where Ren spoke to Snoke? I know I shouldn't be comparing, but the prequels done this so they should've been able to do the same. I'm guessing it was due to time constraints. That's probably why they also just CGI'd a helmet on Ren's face instead of just getting a person to put on a mask and stand there for like a minute.

>you're better off just using a CG trooper than faffing about with wires and compositing a stunt man into the shot
This is just plain lazy. Even Michael Bay goes far with using wires for scenes like this, even building massive sets such as a mansion just to blow it up in the film.

>The prequels, by comparison, used CG when they had other options available.
I disagree. I thought the PT had to use CGI in many instances. Even getting plenty of people with the right build just to dress up as clones and putting thousands of them into one shot would've been impossible. A few dozen, maybe, but not hundreds.
Not trying to start a whole war or anything, just curious, but could you list out the times where you thought they could've used other methods instead of CGI?

All the shots in TLJ's teaser looked great though and had plenty of practical effects.

Crait was even shot on real salt flats.
>>
>>92336586
Well the most egregious examples is the clones. Yeah getting thousands of extras of the right build would have been horrendous, but getting one or two guys who can just stand around on Kashyyyk, or maybe 6 or so to threaten Bail on the landing pad at the Temple? Easy, and would have helped those scenes look a little better
Honestly I can't name a lot of other examples off the top of my head but its been about a year since I last watched the prequels so

And I think they put the CG helmet back on Kylo because they realized in the cutting room that they wanted Kylo's unmasking to happen in Rey's interrogation rather than before, so they just quickly put the mask on, which was honestly probably a lot easier than having to find either Driver or a guy with his build to kneel down and then get Driver to do audio over the top.
As for the Snoke, a large cavernous set would be needlessly expansive for maybe three scenes, the last of which feature dropping rubble all over it anyway, Honestly not sure what CG your talking about in the confrontation between Han and Kylo either

And, for the record, I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here. I do think the CGI use in TFA was a little excessive at times but equally it feels on par with current industry standards in that regard. The prequels by comparison felt like Lucas got a little drunk on the power and flexibility of this newfound tech and ended up overusing it
>>
>>92336622
Yeah, its got this 1930's Shanghai meets Blade Runner in the Galaxy Far Far Away feeling to it
Of all the initial ideas kicked during the concept stages of TFA I think that is the one I wish was in the movie the most. Having the Falcon land there with Han leading Finn and Rey to Maz's place would have made for a more interesting location than the castle we actually got
If nothing else, you'd have a perfect compare and contract moment in Rey's story, as she goes from the dust scoured washed out market of Niima Outpost to the almost overwhelmingly vibrant neo-Hong Kong of the crime planet
>>
>>92336652
Which is great, but going on and on about how "practical" and "real" it all is while subtly insulting the prequels is a shitty move that just draws the attention and inevitable ire of the PT hating crowd who will inevitably end up shitting on the new movies just as much
Disney has made the right call in realizing you won't win those people over, and thus keeping stuff like "Crait was shot on real salt flats" to the realm of interesting tidbits for the directors commentary and BTS stuff where it should belong
>>
>>92336714
>Easy, and would have helped those scenes look a little better
You make a good point, but just sticking to one method would've meant that scenes wouldn't have stuck out as much. For example, ANH had shots with real stormtroopers and CGI stromstroopers. It would be more distracting. Then again most people, if not everyone, didn't know that the clones were CGI until they were told or rewatched them in HD. Even the close ups like with that bail scene looks completely fine and realistic, apart from that slight jitter movement.
>As for the Snoke, a large cavernous set would be needlessly expansive for maybe three scenes, the last of which feature dropping rubble all over it anyway, Honestly not sure what CG your talking about in the confrontation between Han and Kylo either
I'm talking about the entire room, like the walls and all. Even that part where Rey and Finn scream when Han gets killed. Just look at the walls from those scenes.
>equally it feels on par with current industry standards in that regard

The biggest problem with TFA is that it feels like its using Star Wars itself as its sole basing for reference. And only those three original films from the point of view of the audience, with no understanding of things that influenced its creation or the processes that were made to actually create it. And everything feels like it's being taken at face value.

>>

>And everything feels like it's being taken at face value.
YES! That, right there, perfectly surmises by biggest problem with TFA. There's no depth to it, not even the attempt to have texture or feel beneath the surface. Take ANH for example, its a brief aside but they still take the time to explain that there WAS an Imperial Senate who would have objected to the Death Star, but they've been dismantled now. You get a sense of greater politics in the galaxy, both on a state level and on a personal one
Compare to TFA, where the complicated position of the Resistance is swept under the rug, and the scenes dealing with politics (that would have given sufficient weight, meaning and context to the destruction of Hosnia) were cut from the movie entirely because it didn't suit JJ's breakneck pace

Finn is getting together with Rose in TLJ, so I'm pretty sure FinnRey is sunk whichever way the wind blows
And to be perfectly honest, I always preferred the Han and Leia story in ESB and ROTJ anyway, so having a preferred storyline in a situation where two are happening concurrently is completely reasonable for Star Wars
>>

I think what the other anon was saying was that he would prefer a movie about gay Fin and Poe over a movie about Rey and that just shows how poor the character of Rey is and how much damage control TLJ is going to have to do

Do you think they've added in rose specifically too kill the finn/Poe shipping? I think they'll proabably make Poe gay though anyway just appease the vocal minority who'll start a skreaching about forced heterosexuality or whatever. I imagine if they were to do it, it wouldn't be revealed until right at the end of the third movie or in some spin off comic after the trilogies ended, just to avoid the opposite end of potential controversy, so it won't affect his merch sales

Poe's comic is something I really want to like because Soule did a damn good job on those limited series and he's clearly trying hard to make Poe work.

The problem is that even Soule can't make me give a shit about the ST era. He can get close enough that I'm still able to sort of enjoy the comic, but I'm struggling to work out how much of my enjoyment is genuine and how much I'm forcing, and I can tell I'm forcing some of it.
>>
>>92345103
Can I make a suggestion? Don't force your enjoyment, you'll just crap out one day and end up reflexively hating something you otherwise might enjoy because of its association with something else
If you don't give a toss about the ST era, that's completely fine, no ones asking you to, just focus on stuff you do like. There's no requirement to enjoy or even keep on top of everything in Star Wars you know

IF you're just into a horror theme, there's the whole Vampire thing happening in The Screaming Citadel comic right now. Its all very Stoker's Dracula esque, but not really horrifying, just hitting up a lot of the old vampire tropes

I don't even like horrors as genre itself. I like sci-fi and fantasy, and just find some darker and scary stories like Alien or Dead Space interesting. But horror movie, game or book about possession, exorcism, mad psychopaths or zombies is borning to me.
I been reading canon and legends comics for a while but i think i just don't like this medium so much after all. IIRC i dropped reading canon comics in middle of the Vader Down.
But I will check out those stories you mentioned, thanks.
>>
>>92345223

Death Troopers is good. It's zombies but it's a very different take from what you might think. Skip the prequel Red Harvest, though. Red Harvest is one of the worst Star Wars books I have ever read.

The Clone Wars had the Geonosian brain worms, but that's a much straighter take on zombies.

Rebels "Future of the Force" was incredibly tense during the parts inside the building, I thought. It reminded me of Alien: Isolation with the inquisitors stalking the halls.

In the new comics, Lando turns into a terrifying horror story very very quickly.

On balance that could of been an interesting character but execution is 9/10ths of the law in fiction.

I'm trying to remember, has Fassbender ever had to do a Dutch accent before? Because that accent would be a bit of a deal breaker to be honest, its so distinctive an element of Lars' performance I can't imagine Thrawn without it
Also I really hope that stays true for other Chiss we might meet, you don't hear Dutch accents very often in science fiction so that would add a neat layer of "odd and unexpected" to the Chiss

>in the case of the clones where they didn't have to

But they did have to.

So imagine trying to make clone troopers using practical effects.
>Just hire a bunch of extras and put them in clone armor
But then they wouldn't look like clones. They'd all have different heights, builds, and body language. It'd just look like a bunch of random dudes in armor.
>So get a bunch of guys with the same height and build
Ha! Good luck.
>How about we put Temuera Morrison in clone armor, have him do a bunch of takes, and composite them together?
Not only would that be incredibly time consuming and exhausting, but the result would just look worse than any CGI effect.

CGI really is the best option when making a clone army.

I might have been a little off base on that one. A jab at Plageus, albeit coming from someone whose knowledge consists only of the opera scene from RotS.

>>
>>92347167
The clones wear full armour, all you really need to worry about is making sure they've got similar builds and close enough heights and the armour will handle the rest
I mean, take Stormies even in the original movie. Sure if you go threw and look at each and every trooper individually you'll find an array of body types, but for normal viewing the armour is uniform enough to obliterate those differences
And, to be honest, if Disney can rustle up 6 or 7 different tall and lanky dudes to play the Death Troopers, Lucas could have easily found a bunch of guys around the height and build he needed for the few shots of small numbers of troopers interacting with actual human beings

A lot of the effects in the OT have also aged very poorly, though. The Special Editions and Blu-Rays altered a ton of starfighter shots because the bluescreen effect has become far too gratingly obvious, since the lighting on the model and the lighting on the backdrop often don't match right. Some shots were just scrapped entirely and redone from scratch, like pic related.

There are a lot of shots during the asteroid chase in Empire that don't look right either, and a bunch of Dagobah shots are very obviously a sound stage with a fog machine. The Yoda puppet is brilliantly designed, but for every scene where the illusion works, there's a shot where it's really really obvious that he's a puppet. Watching Empire in Blu-Ray also kind of ruins the tauntaun, because with the higher resolution you start to see that the horns are painted.

And of course, everyone remembers the obvious Falcon matte painting in Return of the Jedi, and the Emperor's slugs.

Effects age. ALL effects age. Eventually, any special effect, no matter how good it was, will look fake with enough technological advancement. Simple fact of the matter.

I'm not convinced that's the reason they need to CG the clones.

The real reason, I suspect, is because the prequels operated on a much larger scale than any of the OT films. Think of the two big OT ground battles. Hoth and Endor. In terms of the actual numbers that either side brought to these battles, you're looking at tiny skirmishes. Endor is like 20 rebels and a couple dozen ewoks vs. probably less than a hundred stormtroopers. Hoth was bigger but still not huge.

Geonosis was MASSIVE. Helm's Deep levels of massive, with big sweeping shots of tons of soldiers fighting all on screen. It's the kind of thing that's not practical to do except via CG. Same for the shots of the huge formations of troopers on Kamino and Coruscant. Utapau was also ENORMOUS, but also involved a lot of clones doing stuff you couldn't do IRL, like the clone who runs up and climbs on that crab droid to start shooting it in the head. Then you have all the Order 66 planets and clones with different armor styles that fit their deployment, etc.

Once you already know you're going to be making CG models of the troopers and using them a lot, it gets hard to justify making a whole bunch of armor suits that you'd only use for a couple of shots. That armor ain't cheap.

The OT used tricks for crowd scenes like Vader's arrival in ROTJ. In the big masses of stormtroopers, only the first few rows are real. The rest are a matte painting inserted via greenscreen.

Not gonna lie, 2001 would probably benefit from a bunch of cuts in the first half. No changes, though.

A couple of subtle touchups on the chestburster in Alien wouldn't go amiss. Nothing too huge, just make it move a little more like it's alive and a little less like it's just a thing on the end of a stick. Also, the scenes with Ash's head on the table: there's a very jarring visual difference between the parts where the head is "turned on" and Ian Holm is playing him, and the parts where the head is deactivated and is visibly a dummy head, not a very convincing one. You could super-impose a redone version of the dummy head that looks more like the actor.

For that, you probably have Lucas to thank.

You know how TCW incorporated a bunch of EU stuff but usually changed it significantly? How Ryloth has a normal day-night cycle, for instance, or how the Nightsisters made it in but none of the other clans of the Witches of Dathomir did? Or how the Nightsisters got changed from "Force users who call Force powers spells" to "actual witches with actual magic"? Or how Quinlan Vos went from CRAWLING IN MY SKIIIIIN "Jedi With A Gun!" to literally "that's your opinion, man"?

Lucas likes the EU. He likes the comics and video games most of all. He's visually oriented. He considers the EU separate from his own projects, though. So, as Dave has described it, he would often see stuff in the EU that he really liked the APPEARANCE of, and decided he wanted it in The Clone Wars, but would then run off and do his own thing with it.

AOTC gave us Luminara and Barriss, and the Tartakovsky Clone Wars expanded on them a little. The EU fleshed them out as being a master and an apprentice. Lucas LOVED Tartakovsky Clone Wars, and would refer to it as the "pilot series" for TCW. I think when they were looking for a master-padawan pair to compare and contrast with Anakin and Ahsoka -- which is exactly what the Geonosis arc did -- Lucas probably wanted it to be Luminara and Barriss.

This. One thing people forget is that that PT had large scale battles which involved hundreds of clones. Even Rogue One didn't have that many stormtroopers in a single shot, so it was fine for them to reuse the same people.
I don't know why people keep telling me that they could just get a couple of people to dress up as clones and just greenscreen them. This takes a lot of effort, including getting the right lighting, positioning and right camera angles. Not to mention trying to fit hundreds of clips of clones just into a scene frame by frame.

That's became Amy Allen wasn't an actress. She was a film crew member with zero previous acting experience before being thrown in as an extra for Aayla in AOTC. They kept her for ROTS, since she was, y'know, part of the film crew.

Aayla had previously appeared in the Star Wars: Republic comic series. Lucas thought she was cool, so she got added to the movies.

Casting crew members was more common than you'd think for the prequels. Matthew Wood was a sound editor before he was picked to voice Grievous in the movie, and the fact that he was a regular Lucasfilm employee made it very easy to get him to come back for The Clone Wars too. Even before Grievous, he was also used for Bib Fortuna's cameo in The Phantom Menace, the alien babbling of podracer Ody Mandrell, two aliens in the AOTC speeder chase, and the battle droids.

Ahsoka is 14 in season 1 and 2, 15 after season 3 time skip that gave her the new model, and is 16 by the time of ROTS.

Seasons 1 and 2 and the first half of season 3 are the first year of the war. Season 3's second half, season 4, and season 5 are the second year. I'm not sure if season 6 is the second or third year, or if it straddles the two.

From the context of the replies, it may have something to do with whether or not the NR is supporting Leia's Resistance, which makes sense since the TFA Visual Dictionary (which Pablo wrote) gives a different story, about the NR not supporting the Resistance.
>>
>>92351469
I'm guessing the zygerians thought so
>>
>>92351503

It's 3, because it started during 22 BBY and ended during 19 BBY.

Let's use an earth calendar just for simplicity's sake. Say the war started June 1st, 22 BBY. One year passes, June 1st 21 BBY. Another year, June 1st 20 BBY. A third year takes us to June 1st 19 BBY.

It might be more or less, but the Clone Wars lasted about 3 years. Unless the First Battle of Geonosis was in like Space January and Mustafar was in like Space December. Then you'd get nearly 4 years.

Rian Johnson has instructed John Williams to do TLJ's score before the movie even started.
>>
>>92351866
Impossible because the established time frame is 3 years
>>
>>92351772

The way I heard it, whenever Lucas made one he would present Williams with a complete rough cut of the movie to score. This allowed Williams to score it as one huge piece. This is also known as "how to correctly score a movie".

TFA's early production issues (the story issues that led to Arndt's departure and another few rounds of rewrites) meant it had a very tight schedule. Because of this, Abrams was forced to send individual scenes to Williams to score separately while he worked on the next scene.

Also, for some reason, not only did they not use the London Symphony Orchestra, Williams didn't even conduct most of it. William Ross was conducting a freelance orchestra. John Williams attended the sessions, but only did a few of the recordings.

Rian is based as fuck.

He has even spent more time than usual with the LSG, so that he can help the surrounding media fit together better with the ST.

Most notably was that he helped out with Bloodline a bit.

If there is only 1 good movie in the entire ST era, it will be Rians.

People are worried about TLJ based on the teaser trailer, but I believe that TLJ will surprise people, and open up the ST to the fans.
>>
>>92351928
>>92351994

That is... interesting, but it could likely lead to TLJ's score being weak like TFA's. William's work process is scoring to the finished, or near finished, cut of the film. He tailor's the music to the picture. JJ didn't let him do that and thus the score for TFA suffered for it.
