The family in the comic are just alternate versions of her family. Gwen has found out that the Marvel world has versions IRL people, and she's seeking out versions of her family.

It is. One of the things I've really liked is that it's made Batroc pretty legit and not in a "whoa Batroc is like the biggest badass ever" way. But making him into Gwen's kind of frustrated but caring mentor/father figure (the Wolverine to Gwen's Jubilee as it were) has rounded him out really well and I kind of hope they stick together as a duo for a long time.
