Well it was tarnished by normies, and I actually liked the song before it was a meme.
But I think We Are Number One was special because it had a purpose. It helped to raise money for the treatment of a very talented and kind man who wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.
And after Stefan did that live thing with the other actors and got the treatment, it kind of died out.
I think it's the only meme who's forced existence can be justified by saying it actually had a positive impact besides amusement.

Well, most episodes of the earlier seasons were focused around telling some kind of a humorous story that still could work as a story, with character archetypes that were more or less consistent. The newer seasons often simplify it. For example, Patrick wasn't just an idiot, he was an idiot who tried to look like an elderly figure, constantly giving stupid advice to SpongeBob. This was completely forgotten later for the sake of making him simply retarded. Or the Squidward episodes. In the older show, whenever he suffered, it was usually more or less deserved (see - the story still worked on a basic level, he acted like a jerk and got his comeuppance). In the newer seasons, he often suffered without actually doing anything bad, i.e. now the story didn't even work on a basic level and was just a series of random slapstic gags.
