I wonder if they can make it any more obvious that this is Alfred
>>
>>92254001
I freaking hate that Snyder has Alfred be so gauche as to actually call Bruce his son. I'm totally fine with "they boy I raised," and I think Alfred does love Bruce like a son, but I think having him say it is cheap and out of character. Also lazy, since if you're good at writing, the audience will know, and you won't have to beat them over the head with it.
>>
>>92254093
>>92254100
These pages have echoes from The Return of Bruce Wayne. Batman, Blackbeard, mistaken identity, an ambush, pirate secrets
>>
>>92255399
I think that's the one holdover from Snyder's Morrison fanboy crush. He's mainly gotten it out of his system, but Alfred called Bruce his son once in Morrison's run and now it's all Snyder writes him with.
>>
>>92255532
Really? Which issue was that from Morrison?

I'm absolutely not against Alfred thinking of Bruce in a fatherly way, but I just can't buy him actually saying or thinking the words explicitly.
>>
>>92255399
It's evidence of his hackery. He fundamentally misunderstands the character of Alfred and consistently writes him as a whining bitch baby instead of the stiffest of upper lips with a heart of gold that keeps the Bat-family going.
>>
Man, why does Snyder always get great artists? It always makes me wanna buy his shit comics.
>>
>>92255589
just after Final Crisis iirc, it was supposed to be an emotional moment etc.

and Snyder, as is his style, beat it to the ground
>>
>>92255771
Agreed. Snyder can do good work, but I feel like he's been on autopilot since Rebirth.

>>92255902
Huh. That might make sense, but I refuse to read crisis comics on principle. :)
>>
>>92255399
>waah Alfred thinks of Bruce like a son
>but he can't call him that

Nice autism. It's only in comics circles full of character faggotry that you see that giving characters some semblance of depth is the worst thing EVER.
>>
>>92256014
So why are you here, anon?
>>
>>92255976
>I refuse to read crisis comics on principle. :)
This is the average Snyder fan. DCasuals who refuse to read comics prior to 2011.
>>
>>92256014
You don't know what depth means.
>>
>>92256068
I enjoy the autism and pointing it out. Really gets my neurons fired.
>>92256098
I'm sure you do and you would really like to educate me on how depth in relation to pre existing characters in fiction works that is by the definition given by Freud. Educate me anon, I'm such an illiterate.
>>
>>92256181
Ah. So you're just an asshole.

>>92256079
Actually, the only thing I've ever loved by Snyder is Black Mirror. Everything else is some variety of unsatisfying.

My favorite era of comics is Batman Reborn-Incorporated. I just don't happen to like most universe-spanning crossovers.
>>
>>92256277
>Ah. So you're just an asshole.
Not an argument.
>>
>>92256277
>My favorite era of comics is Batman Reborn-Incorporated. I just don't happen to like most universe-spanning crossovers.
Maybe you should read more comics anon that didn't just come out post 2000 muh digital coloring age. Just a suggestion. :)
>>
>>92254072
Eat it punk
>>
>>92256181
I mean your grammar fucking sucks. A basic lesson in character depth is having motivations and emotions revealed through subtext and nuance. For instance, not having a character who has been cemented as being the epitome of British resolve and stoicism over 70 odd years call his employer his son whenever the mood strikes him.
>>
>>92256437
Not him but that is without a doubt the best era of Batman the world will ever see.
>>
>>92256540
Not really, late 80s to early 90s is superior in every way where you have legendary writers like O'Niel, Grant, Milligan, Monech in charge of writing Batman that feels grounded and relatable but at the same time larger than life.
>>
>>92256392
You're not making an argument either. Just trolling, by your own admission.

>>92256437
I am in the middle of reading Knightfall. Is that good enough for you, anon?
>>
>>92256625
Legendary. Not including Dixon, but including Moench.

Um...
>>
>>92256625
Grounded and relatable only gets you so far with Batman. I respect Grant and Moench's work but find them wildly overrated.
>>
>>92256625
This guy gets it. Moench/Dixon/Grant era was the best Batman era.
>>
>>92253899
Is this the same Batman from Miller's ASBAR?
>>
>basic lesson in character depth is having motivations and emotions revealed through subtext and nuance.
And you came to this conclusion by yourself? You assessment is valid in a certain way, basic character buildup is having a character who has inspiration and emotion, how an author chooses to use these crux in up to that individual, artistic signature is of the most importance in creating any art. So if the author chooses to be blunt about emotional aspects, giving value to overdramatization and raw emotion, the substance does not become worthless. In a classic play they had third person narration on top of characters telling viewers what was happening at all times and that in no way diminished the depth of the characters and the reaches of the play. This is basic Aristotle.
No what you are talking about is the quality in relation to style, but we're talking about the substance here and not style. Learn the difference.
>For instance, not having a character who has been cemented as being the epitome of British resolve and stoicism over 70 odd years call his employer his son whenever the mood strikes him.
Yes it's called basic character evolution, can happen over time or in an instant. Look man let's not pretend we're having this discussion because your great understanding of the basics of the fiction writing, it's just a simple case of characterfaggotry. "It was like that, now it isn't. This is the criticism I'll use to invalidate this author's work" is a simple symptom that's found in capeshitters like us and it might have some value depending on situation, but to pretend otherwise is just showing no sense of self awareness. And capeshit needs self awareness in order to be digested like a monday morning cereal after a hangover.

No that's trashfire. Read the individual works of those writers. Start with Batman: Venom and Dark Knight, Dark City.

First 9 issues of this were pretty hit or miss for me, but I'm sold on this one already.

No. This is still in-continuity, Snyder's Batman.

Think of it as Snyder's version of Inc.
There's still the main batbook, but this is all still happening too, somehow.

Nice conversation.
>>
>>92259726
>It's regression.
You don't know what that word means.
>You're citing Aristotle like storytelling hasn't evolved since B.C.
Those Greek philosophers are the back bones of Western civilization. If you look hard enough you will find the influences in so many things. Poetics is still one of the things they hammer you with if you took any serious literature classes. "Lol they're old" is a futile argument if you don't even know the true depth of the thing you are trying to dismiss.
>>
>>92260340
This wasn't a conversation faggot. This was me pointing out, like the anon you are conversing with, that you're a pretentious faggot.

>>
>>92260720
I only converse with people who have some intellectual worth. Do you have that anon?
>>
>>92260824
What would you like to talk about Scott? If the topic is writing, specifically writing comics, I'd say you provide very intellectual little worth to the conversation.
>>
>>92260783
Yes I'm Capullo, you'll never be as successful as me and write as good of a Batman story as Scott. You know how many times faggots like you tweet at me everyday? You know why they do it! Jealousy. Look at me, I'm in my 50s and I'm talented and handsome. You know what you're going to be in your 50s? A wagecuck. And only if you're lucky enough to graduate some tier 3 university. Otherwise you're just going to be sweeping fools at best. Hey maybe you get a job at DC offices to clean toilets and sweep floors and as you're sweeping the floor of a hallway you're going to see a big poster of my art framed up at the wall. And it's going to remind you of this time. And you're going to cry inside. Maybe if you could manage to buy a decent poison, you might just be able to commit suicide. Don't take the ratshit though, it's just going to damage your internals and make you writhe in agony and I don't want that on my conscience. You're better off slitting your throat or hanging yourself from the ceiling.
>>
>>92260937
>intellectual little worth
Learn middle school English again child. It's for your own good. But if you're from a subhuman country then my apologies.
>>
>>92261121
Capulloposting just became a thing.

And this is the first plate of pasta.
>>
>>92260465
Regression means a step backwards instead of forwards. Like taking well established subtext that allowed for great storytelling moments and complex character interactions and making it overt text because that's less difficult to write. Or in a slightly different simile that you might be able to grasp, taking a statement such as "like storytelling hasn't evolved since B.C." and reducing it to "Lol they're old". It's a boring simplification of what makes the character great and a "development" that goes contrary to 70 years of characterization that did absolutely nothing to justify itself. Now I'm done talking with you, you're either a troll who thinks he's smarter than he is or are just that full of yourself, not actually looking to have a conversation about anything.
>>
>>92259664
Did you stop to think that it might be intentional?
>>
Huh. This seems pretty decent.

Feels weird to see a new Batman comic I don't hate.
>>
>>92261469
What's the intention? I did nothing for the story.
>>
>>92261226
>development" that goes contrary to 70 years of characterization that did absolutely nothing to justify itself.
This kind of thinking is very wrong and also purely subjective. Let me put it in different context, if O'Neil hadn't put all his social and political beliefs in a dying comic, we would never have gotten the characterization of Green Arrow that we have today. Now I'm not foolish enough to argue that what happened in 70s is of equal value to what Snyder has done here, but what happened in 70s does validate that artistic expression in a genre as uncreative as of Capeshit is worth something. So an argument that stasis should be the only status quo is a redundant one here. Hate the change, don't hate the intention of it.
2 more things, first don't make the argument of "it's been that way for 70 years." We both know that you haven't consumed 70s years worth of content to validate that argument. Second, don't pretend that Alfred as a character before Snyder was the pinnacle of storytelling with "subtle and stoic character acting." He's there mostly to make some snarky comments, patch Bruce up or be a plot device. There are instances where he is written well and something more than that but it is mostly just that.
>>
>>92261719
It has been pretty fun since the start man. First arc was mediocre but it has some of the best art Romita had done in decade (excluding The Last Crusade). Second arc picked up a lot.
>>
>>92261859
That's some excellent tap dancing around the issue, and once again some great rewording of the argument, but you still need to work on your trolling if you want people to believe you're "in it for the conversation".
>>
>>92254212

Villainesses are still Batman's kryptonite, right?
>>
>>92254130
Jesus Snyder you just love your gruesome kills don't you
>>
