I think the key is a crutch. It's like training wheels for royalty, only it's just as likely if not more so to stunt the individual's ability to strive for royalty. Like wearing the crown give you the kingdom, but someone had to make that crown and the kingdom.

Zoss got to Throne on his own with no keys, beat all the angels with no keys, then forged the keys from what he beat out of Metatron.

No idea yet if the key is needed to bring down the god hammer, but since characters like Zoss and Maya are about, it seems there are potentially more potent weapons when it comes to royalty.
