His endgame made no sense. First he wanted Robin to be his apprentice, and I thought he wanted to be Evil Batman....but then he went out and got Terra? And his game was to fuck with Beast Boy? Then his game was to fuck with Raven to destroy the world?

That guy was all over the map. I think it's kind of funny, but the very best version of Slade was the version that was entirely in Robin's head.

Also, can somebody explain why Robin was the leader of the Teen Titans, and why Slade cared about him? Literally any of the other Titans were stronger than Robin, what made him so special? It's not like Batman in the Justice League where Batman is really smart, because Robin is a moron. What is it that makes everyone care about Robin? Is that Robin's superpower? Making people like him?

Slade's entire goal in the first two seasons was to find himself an apprentice. In the earlier episodes he was clearly testing the Titans to see which one of them would fit the role best, he obviously chose Robin, the reason likely being their similarities (which were discussed multiple times throughout that season). Then he kept trying to force Robin to go down the same path he had, until something happened he had not expected: Robin chose to infect himself with the nanoprobes over siding with Slade. At that point, he realized he would never get him on his side, so he went looking for an apprentice outside the Titans entirely, one who would be easier to manipulate, and that's where Terra came in.

As for Robin, there were numerous instances that indicated he was extremely powerful, and could likely fight pretty much any Titan to a draw if not a win. Are you forgetting that he literally won an actual Titans championship? Or even more importantly, that he fought pretty evenly against the four other main Titans together, arguably winning against them twice?

Being the team leader isn't about being most powerful, and Robin was the best fit personality wise. Beast Boy was an idiot, Starfire was a ditz, Raven was too antisocial. Cyborg would probably be the best second choice but he preferred to goof off and be a clown.
