I keep seeing you anons reference this one phrase from GOTG 2, did it really stick out that much?
>>
>>92227344
Stuck out in my mind, yeah. It was funny, but also showed that Quill had grown as a person and that Yondu just wanted Quill to like and admire him.

If you haven't seen the movie, it was

>Yondu rides down hanging from his arrow
>Quill says he looks like Mary Poppins
>Yondu: "Who's Mary Poppins? Is he cool?"
>Quill skips the opportunity to give him shit and says, "Yeah, he's cool."
>Yondu, low-key excited that Quill called him someone cool, declares proudly, "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!"

It's a great moment.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxqqdATF7w8

I think the fact that an MCU film ended on such an emotional note was really needed.
>>
I'd really like to see more speculation about Yondu's place in the Infinity War. I was enjoying that in the last thread.
>>
>>92229137
I was pretty stunned by how good the ending was.

>Quill's eulogy
>Kraglin and Quill exchanging final gifts from Yondu
>Gamora and Nebula's goodbye (Seriously, can we give Gunn credit for improving both characters?)
>Father and Son as Groot sits on Quill's lap
>Groot instinctively reaching for Gamora, then falling asleep on Drax's shoulder
>The Colors of Ogord and Kraglin's teary salute
>"He didn't disappoint us."
>"No he did not."
>Yondu's ashes forming the arrow

But I think what got me most was

>"He didn't chase them away."
>"No."
>"Even though he yelled at them. And was always mean. And stole batteries he didn't need."
>"Well of course not."

Damn fine acting from Pratt and Cooper.

>>
>>92229019
It was great moment that was not only funny but also in a way heartwarming.

This is the only Marvel movie to make me cry, and the only movie period that I've cried again just thinking about it.

Shit.
>>
>>92230169
I feel like these movies hit a lot harder if you've lost a parent or had a rough childhood. Gunn does emotion really well and this movie was a lot rawer than the first.
>>
>>92229019
I really like that they didn't go the cheap route by having it be a joke at Yondu's expense. It started out that way but then did a complete and unexpected turnaround. It's still funny, without being mean.

Say what you will about the movie, but those final scenes were golden.

I didn't think much about the ending when It came along, but yeah it stuck out quite well. But damn, now that you faggots mention the quality of Yondu's moment, the scene is a bit more touching. Here I examined the movie to being average.
>>
>>92232205
The ending was great because it not your typical "Everything is going to be fine, the heroes save the day and are off on another adventure as their journey continues" ending that is most common. The only one I think that doesn't have kind of ending is the first Captain America.

Even Civil War had that kind of ending sorta.
>>
>>92232351
>>92232205
Yeah, no. It was absolutely dragged down. The movie was so bad and unfunny that it was impossible to care by that point. The scene had no "quality" and the movie was not "average" - it was awful.

I have an attachment to Fleetwood Mac, so I was really hype to see how they used The Chain, That bit at the end when he goes full Star child. 10/10
>>
>>92227344
It was also shocking a surprising to allow Gunn to break Star-Lord's Walkman and replace it with a Zune. That I like because The Walk-Man symbolised the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, ballsy move.
>>
>>92230105
I've been listening to Southern Nights a lot. Loved how that song fit that scene.
>>
>>92229019
I feel like if Starlord had been a girl, he'd told everyone his mom was Mary Poppins, and then she could realize that she had a real Mary Poppins all along.
Hasselhoff was kinda stupid anyways.
>>
>>92232504
I agree. Gunn did a good move there. I also think that this film was a hard task because Gunn couldn't make massive changes that wouldn't affect the team prior to Infinity Wars.
>>
>>92232610
Well Edgar Wright did had a bitch fit and left Ant-Man after the studio wanted to include the beginning scene of young Hank Pym leaving SHIELD.

I so much loved the use of color in this damn movie - all the psychadelic colors were like one giant middle finger to DC. You CAN do a superhero movie with vibrant designs and heart and humor at the same time, dammit.

No this wasn't the fucking most original script in the fucking world, but the movie was big and loud and fun. THAT'S what superhero movies are about.

Ego was an awesome character.
I was shocked when it was revealed that Ego gave Peter's mom the tumor. It makes watching the first film super disturbing now.
>>
Is Yondu this fucking great in the comics?

Ravagers prequel when?
>>
>>92236409
It could be, but also Coulson could be making a guest appearnce to murder Thanos, steal the gauntlet, and make himself The One Above All.

My point being, there is absolutely 0 reason right now to think that Yondu will make an appearence.
>>

Fox on the Run was one of my favorite songs before the movie even came out. Since it's not in the movie and that might be cheating, The Chain is also a great song that was used very effectively.

The first 2/3 of the movie seemed like 5.4/10 in general while the last 1/3 of the movie was like 8.0/10.

The comedy in the first 2/3 of the movie was mostly not that good and some drax stuff seemed overdone. The Stallone scene in the snowy place seemed awkward.

The fight with the octopus seemed odd. I'm not sure why they were hided to fight this thing in particular if they were. Why wouldn't the people on the planet just shoot the octopus with rockets or something? Did they actually live on the planet for an extended period of time providing security services or something?

Groots dance scene at the beginning didn't seem that interesting to me, but maybe it was just supposed to be endearing but it wasn't really that endearing to me.

The part where Ayesha is seen talking to the people in the room of video game style drone controllers seemed kind of rushed somehow.

The Tazerface speech part wasn't too funny. The Ravagers in general seemed slightly lame and not that cool or at least interesting some other way like I might prefer in an action movie.

The movie was okay, it reminds me of Kong: Skull Island with it having some interesting ideas and the first 2/3 having some failings like with the comedy, but the last 1/3 being better. They also both had some good visuals.
>>
>>92238577
Probably a fakeout.
Before AoU came out, they talked about how Quickslav's actor was contracted for multiple movies.
>>
>>92227344
It was ok.
My favorite line was "I'm gonna make some weird shit"
>>
>>92238821
I think the Tazerface joke was the one joke that was probably dragged on a little too much
>>
>>92236985
It's two weeks since I saw the movie and randomly I start thinking about that twist.
It just fucking made me drop my jaw, call me a drone or whatever, but it was long time ago since I enjoyed a movie.

>>
>>92236985

>>
>>92239027
I think they were trying to transition from the dark stuff that was just going on. Yondu's men begging their captain from help before being launched into space. Still I agree it went on too long, and it wasn't that funny of a joke to begin with.
>>
>>92240564

Kinda a dumb reason seeing as time is relative to him. Her life would be the light of a spark compared to number of years he has already been alive.
>>
>>92240937
She was the first person that made him feel like he wasn't alone in his entire existence, it was huge to him. He built a damn monument to her, and I don't believe it was for Peter's sake.
>>
>>92240011
Please step on me and call me worthless.
>>
>>92240937
His whole character is that he wanted to meet other intelligent life, did and then thought it boring. He decided the only intelligent life worth sharing the universe with would be himself. You could say he developed a massive EGO. When he realized that he loved Peter's mother it threatened that large EGO and cause him to behave irrationally.

Having an internal crisis about your beliefs is going to be a lot worse when those beliefs involve you thinking you're the only intelligent life worth a damn.

This one made more sense than others, Peter's mom was nothing to him, barely a blip on the radar. So he has no concept of how important she is to Peter. Ego is so full of himself (Yes) that he doesn't understand why it's such a bad thing to do.
>>
Movie would have been a 9/10 if they'd cut about half of the jokes out. Instead it was a 4/10 that became a 7/10 after the Ego "twist".

Also

>main song is The Chain
>never play the bass solo
>>
>>92241686
>Peter's mom was nothing to him, barely a blip on the radar.

Did you not even watch the movie? He killed her BECAUSE she was important to him and he couldn't handle that
>>
>>92241022
>He built a damn monument to her, and I don't believe it was for Peter's sake.
That would take him a whole what, 4 seconds to construct.
>>
>>92241442
They were going to fight either way.
I imagine Solidus said that to make Raiden angry so he'd act irrational and predictable.
>>
>>92241686
I kind of felt it was too convenient. Like Ego seems like he's decently intelligent enough to know how to emotionally manipulate someone. I feel like he would have been smart enough to not share that small detail....but then, that's not how movies work I guess.

Might've been more natural for Peter to become "one" with the planet for a moment and see into the past and realize it himself.
>>
>>92241706
Fuck the bass solo. I don't know why some of the people here are so obsessed with it when it's probably the weakest part of the song.

I think that was Gunn reading old comics and having that exact same rant Rocket has out loud, and just deciding to put it into the film, so great was his personal umbrage at the idea of a character from the 70s calling himself Taserface. It only gets dumber the further back you go.

Gunn wrote Scooby Doo 1 and 2, then he wrote and directed a film where an alien space slug turns a car salesman into a tumor ridden alligator man who feeds a woman he's having an affair with raw meat until she's a spherical flesh balloon from all the baby slugs he's fucked into her. She is conscious through all of this until she bursts. Then one of the baby slugs tries to possess a teenage girl via crawling through her vagina when she's in the bath, then she's forced to run for her life when the other baby slugs possess her entire family, turning her mom, dad and little brother into zombie extensions of said car salesman tumor alien hybrid, all of which want to fuck her.

Wacky jokes and violent stark horror has always been Gunn's calling card, the man got his start in life working on Troma films for fuck's sake. People were trying to get their heads around Disney appointing the man who's debut film was a remake of Romeo and Juliet where it turns out they're brother and sister and the film ends with them in suburbia raising their retarded incest babies as the happy fairy tale ending when he was announced as director of the first Guardians. It's a dark horse decision that has paid off in dividends for them.

Why didn't any of the Avengers try to stop Ego's spore on Earth if Guardians takes place in 2014?
It says 34 years later after the beginning which was 1980. You'd think a massive, matter encompassing blob would have been talked about or questioned. They even had time to set up police around to try and stop the civilians.

From the time the plant began to expand to the time it stopped was probably no more than 15 minutes, it only made it down the block from Dairy Queen if I remember correctly. Local cops had time to set up a small barricade while it was idle, but the Avengers getting there would take at least more than 15 minutes.

I like the headcanon that the Avengers DID eventually show up to investigate it, but that's such a small pointless detail that we'll never know. Writing themselves in a knot just to get two characters talking about such an irrelevant event would be real dumb, stuff like that is best left to headcanon.

How in god's name can a dumb fun movie about comic characters that hadn't been pop culturally relevant since their inception manage to make me emotionally invested to the point that I couldn't hold back tears and yet the last two Star Wars movies had me emotionally stiff as a board when their characters died?

To be fair he was planning on spending a long, long time with Peter.

Maybe he decided honesty was the best policy and, while he didn't want to drop all the truth bombs at once, he did want to sprinkle them out. He assumed that Peter had no real way of resisting him and that he could use him as he saw fit until he came to terms with the fact that he and Ego were in it for the long haul.

He probably assumed that after a few thousand (or million) years there with him that Peter would come around to his way of thinking either way.

The first half of the movie is kind of a slog. Most of the jokes and banter were cringey. Drax is basically a meme in this movie and so is groot.

But around when Rocket and yondu are trying to escaoe to the end the movie really picks up as each character goes through the highpoints of their character arcs.

that tape joke was just fucking stupid though. There's a difference between comedy and just being silly. totally ruined the tone

No, but your experience of time does shift as you age. You remember less as experiences start to become less unique, as a result when you look back the years appear shorter.

For a lot of older people, mid 20's is what they've mentally clocked as the mid point of their lives.

This is also why people don't consciously clock things like the fact that the first GotG movie came out almost three years ago, or the fact that 2017 is already half over.

He already made himself look older just for Quill's sake. He didn't need to age himself. So it is assumed that he made modifications for the taste of every planet, but it would be confusing for his story telling in his diorama if he doesn't use the same self image for every scene. It would be hard to notice if was all multiple versions of himself, if they all looked different.

also why did he need Peter at all? He says Peter is an immortal and that he needs to use him as a power source, but weren't Pete's powers really just an extension of Ego's in the first place if he lost them when Ego was destroyed? He carries the Celestial gene, meaning that Ego has his second Celestial he needs to enact his plan because he can't accomplish it with a single Celestial consciousness. Peter's powers in this film are just an extension of Ego, as Ego is much older and practiced over the course of millenia and can channel the power through Peter. Peter himself is around 30 and he's nowhere near the experience to do Celestial things on his own.

Saw it tonight.

I thought the ending was good and there were a lot of good scenes, but I also think it got a little too goofy at times.

For example, the turd joke should've ended with Rocket's "something squishy in your pillow". They didn't need to keep shooting it back and forth three more times just to tell the audience that Drax takes legendary shits. Same thing with the penis joke. In fact, the joke of "Drax doesn't understand something" is really feeling tiresome after two movies' worth.

With that said, when his good moments happened they were REALLY good. Batista still killed it. I think his best scene was when he and Mantis were sitting on the steps and she senses his buried emotions. Easily one of the most powerful scenes in the movie, for me.

Yondu was wearing the prototype.

You do grasp the fact that a 'prototype' is usually not the one that's finally actually made.

Kraglin was using the final version, which he had to get implanted and stuff anyway.

>How

What do you mean? They used a real human, of course it'll look more realistic than a full CGI character. That was Kurt himself in a wig and an excellent makeup job, with some minor digital touch-ups.

I looked it up and apparently he's done 28 films with this same makeup artist, so the fact that the guy's worked on his face so many times before is probably a factor.
>>
>>92250809
Yeah, I thought the turd and continual penis jokes were a little much (though after reading this >>92243565 I understand a little better why they might be there).

But apart from those I think I enjoyed Drax's performance the most of the main 5 characters. By the end I think Yondu was my overall favorite though. >YOU SAID YOU WERE GOING TO EAT ME >I was being funny! >NOT TO ME

I'm not sure why Drax's constant quipping wasn't as grating to me as, say, ultron and that ilk. Maybe it's just that his overly literal shtick hits way too close to home when I compare it to how I think, how my immediate family thinks, and how people argue on this godforsaken website that I enjoy too much.

>your spoiler
Mm yes, one of my favorite scenes as well. It cleverly exposes his emotional state without it being mashed though the blender of his culture + his personality that colors everything that comes out of his mouth, and we are able to get a glimpse of what might really be going on inside his head.

I feel like in this movie the key to it being so much better than most of the rest of marvel is it's emotional scenes and comedy was well placed. There wasn't a moment like in Dr. Strange where his mentor dies after talking about being afraid of death only for mere seconds later his cape wipes his tears away then more jokes with the love interest happen.

Yondu's death wasn't immediately followed by drax jokes. Jokes mostly happened in the middle when people were figuring out what's going on and during action scenes. Sad moments were mostly just sad moments.

TL;DR The pacing was better than almost every other MCU movie.
>>
>>92251175
>I can't fucking stand Avengers movies for a reason I can't quite pinpoint
Avengers 1 and 2 are very weak as films, because getting multiple major actors together is a pain to make a story about. But novelty alone kept them popular.

Civil War gave us hope that IR wiould suck less. It requires a certain talent to write a film with a large cast and the Rossos seem to get it.

Keep in mind that Ego had been careful for most of his screentime to not actually lie at any point. So if he had been so careful in telling the truth in a misleading way, I doubt he would lie about one thing as major as his intentions.

There is two kinds of love: There is the love where you want the one you love to be happy, and there is the love where you only care about how happy you personally feel when you are in the company of your love.

Ego is the 2nd kind, the selfish kind of love. While the love we really meant is the selfless kind, where you want your loved ones to be happy at the cost to yourself.

The snickering Sovereign lady was the good punchline that was completely smothered by the constant repetition of the gag following Rocket's initial rant.
>>
>>92253439
Rocket's repetitive barrage about his name was the only reason he made a point of mentioning his name to the Sov receptionist, though.
>>
>>92253499
Sure, but that doesn't mean the joke wasn't run into the ground by that point.

So does GOTG2 have the highest body count for an MCU movie?

All of Yondu's loyal men left to die in the vacuum of space
The remaining scavengers who get killed by Yondu and Rocket
All of his own children Ego killed for not being able to harness his Celestial powers
Peter's mom and others who Ego more than likely killed to achieve his goals
People on 1000 planets caught in the initial blast set off by Ego's spores

Goddamn Rocket's lines at the end hit me hard. That was really well delivered. Hell I wonder if we'll see some character growth in a marvel film from Rocket.

>I like the headcanon that the Avengers DID eventually show up to investigate it, but that's such a small pointless detail that we'll never know. Writing themselves in a knot just to get two characters talking about such an irrelevant event would be real dumb, stuff like that is best left to headcanon.
Well I know that the grandpa is still alive, despite having his scenes cut short in two films now. They probably am going to add a scene in IR of Peter Quill of visiting his grandpa and maybe mention that incident while he was there.

He delivered this line so fucking well and was one of the scenes that got me close to tearing up.

I think Ego was convinced that Peter was on his side and was sure he'd understand/agree.

>My dad left when I was a baby so when Starlord is talking about never having a dad to play catch got to me. Then when he started playing catch with him, it got to me even more.
Although the logically conclusion of the film's plot is that if your father was willing to abandon you, then he probably wasn't a very good dad and you are better off without him.

I am not trying to make a joke, I am just making an observation. Hope you don't take it as an insult.
>>

>I think Ego was convinced that Peter was on his side and was sure he'd understand/agree.
Peter was borderline brainwashed at that point. When his eyes changed it was very likely that Peter would do anything Ego wanted. But the mother's murder was the one thing that snapped him out of it.

Well Nebula was never paired up with anyone in the comics.

However, the MCU in general appear to be walking away from shipping characters together. It makes sense that there is no benefit to get two characters hooked up, narrative wise. And GotG2 outright stated that they are better off with sexual tension but stopping there.
>>
>>92258791
Oh, the major exception is Antman and the Wasp. or any other character who has strong history of couples being plot relevant.

>I feel like these movies hit a lot harder if you've lost a parent or had a rough childhood

For sure. My mom died around 2010, and growing up with her (Dad wasn't really around both because of the things he did and because I pushed him out of life when I was a teenager) was pretty rough, and both the ending of the first and second movie managed to squeeze some tears out of me.

It's embarrassing as shit and I'm glad that the movie theater was dark. I think Quill opening up the present in the first movie and having the first song on the mixtape being Ain't No Mountain High Enough hit me harder though, because it was like a message from his mom years after she died, reminding him how much he loved her.

That bit at the beginning, I realized they were fighting for their lives, but at the same time I was thinking, "The gold people did nothing wrong, and they're killing dozens of them. That's fucked up." Then it turned out all the gold people were just playing video games so it was fine!

When I saw Deadpool there were a bunch of kids in the theater, probably their parents thought "it's another superhero movie, of course I can come with my kids" but when the swearing and violence started they left in a matter of seconds.

I absolutely loved the emotional Drax bits.
"We're a family."
"And so are you... on the inside."

While the comedy bits with Drax were funny in the first movie, he felt a bit out of place on the team. This one did a great job of solidifying him as a member.

My father is a constant disappointment to me and the fact that I'm related to him is a source of constant anger, depression, and anxiety. If it wasn't for my sisters, I would probably never talk to him, and would probably be in a much better head space. Everytime I see him all it does is just reminds me of why I never want to be around him.

>>92260226
Oh yeah, now that he has had five scenes laughing loudly as if that was a joke he's totally a better character. Retard.

I think a lot of people assumed that Meredith had cancer because of her contact with an alien, even though Peter turned out alright. But stating that it was deliberate does change things enormously.

It's like the 'twist' in Civil War. Through Winter Soldier we know that Hydra was responsible for the death of Tony's parents, but we don't necessarily know that Steve knows that it was Bucky specifically, but we know that he keeps this information from Tony which adds to their present conflict.

Parental twists have been a blockbuster staple since Empire Strikes Back, but I thought these two were executed really well. Especially compared to the 'Martha' fiasco.

Not to get off topic but way back when the South Park movie came out, the same thing happened when Terrance and Phillip started singing. Funny that real life was mirroring the movie as it happened.
