Seeing how tumblr et co these days seem to think creators have some sort of personal responsibility to control their fans, it's more likely just him telling everyone to stop asking him to do something about pepe or how he feels about how pepe is being used or try to regain control of his creation or tell "his fans" that using the frog like that isn't cool or whatever.

I'm quite sure he's sick of hearing about it or having people whine about how he really should do something about the way his character is being used to promote these horrible ideas. So this is his easy of doing something: He killed the character, they dead, it's off his hands now.
