In "The New Lars" Steven, while in Lars' body, wore only short sleeves instead of his usual longsleeve undershirt combo. It was symbolism not only to show it was Steven in there, but that "Lars" had opened up and was feeling less insecure.

Lars on the way to the Cool kids potluck had worn short sleeves only, another sign that he was opening up instead of shying away. He was developig so well and then he got kidnapped, bummer.

I like the symbolism though.

Two final points on Lars' sleeves:

His long sleeves are part of an undershirt. It's not part of the Big Donut uniform or anything, it's something he consciously conceals himself with. I think this kinda relates to the nature of his guard, which is also very deliberate and not at all necessary.

Also, when we see him as a kid, he's in a t-shirt. Although he still cared about how people saw him (see: photo ripping), he was much more carefree and happy.

The real problem is the bizarre discrepancy in the series' depiction of humans and how we're supposed to view their society.

On a moral level humans and their society sit at the heart of this series. It's a big part of why Rose rebelled and what compels gems to break from homeworld's influence. It's Steven's humanity that gives him an emotion derived strength that sets him apart.

And yet in practise... humans are just a fucking sideshow. Used for filler and dumb gags unless they're Greg and Connie (purely because of their close relationship with gems). Every time the audience is reminded by the total lack of interest the people of beach city have in who and what the gems are it drives a wedge between our ability to relate to them because they seem like nothing but a shallow grab-bag of caricatures. We relate more to the gems because they're at least consistent.

So the series paradoxically wants to peddle the notion that humanity is important while at the same time everytime it focuses on that same humanity it feels irreverent and skippable.

Everything would be fixed if from the start the Gems had kept themselves secret from the world. Too late now though...

Yeah, I do feel like Sadie is in her early 20s due to Barb saying she never even went to prom. And that she picked up the job at The Big Donut as a summer job, but 2-3 years have passed since then, meanwhile, Lars referred to himself as a teenager in season 4, so he's 18 at most, even if it's weird for an 18 year old to still refer to themselves as a teenager.

But I think in Ronaldo's book someone posted the page that the events that happened between him and Lars at the lighthouse when they were younger occurred 15 years ago. Young Lars seemed about 11-13, so that'd make Lars in his mid to late 20s, which makes no sense at all.

In the first season, there were a bunch of fresh concepts and new things being revealed about the characters and lore all the time. The exposition was fascinating, and led people to believe there were greater things to come. When it came to actually developing those ideas and concepts, the show sucked. Peridot and Lapis's characters went nowhere, the Cluster arc resolution was lame, Steven is still as, if not more retarded than he was in the first season, and it's taken 3 more seasons for anything meaningful to happen with Homeworld. Simply put, after Jail Break, the show lost all sense of direction.

I feel like they have gotten lazy and stopped giving a fuck. The first season felt much more detailed, refined and slower, now it's more of a rushed mess.
Where has stuff like the dancing gone? That was such a huge thing at the beginning and now it doesn't really happen anymore. I also believe they're rushing relationships and character development which is most notable when it comes to Amethyst (and Pearlmethyst). I think a lot of things could have needed better and more subtle development.
I don't know, man. It's like it's missing the passion and love it had at the beginning. I started to like this show because it was really complex and multi layered for a cartoon but now it's like those are the exact things that are missing.

Kinda feel bad for her/them. I mean, they become an entirely new entity when they fuse. the original 2 are still there, but start to get used to being together when they stayed fused for long. unlike ruby+sapphire who become someone new out of choice and love, these are essentially being forced to make/unmake themselves any time Aqua asks. I could see how it would get annoying if either
-they liked being together but kept having to split up on and off
-they didn't like each other or like the idea of being Stuck Together

Whenever Aquamarine says "Do your thing" or "Pull yourself together" she's pretty much belittling the whole process. she could just as easily use her wand to catch her target and have Topaz guard them, but would rather make Topaz fuse with each other and act as a walking cage.

Townie episodes were fun at first, when they were about people's mundane lives interacting with Gem magic. It gave us something to speculate on, back when the show was still light and comfy and they could put little hints to the show's backstory while giving us easygoing comedic plots about the mudane world and the magical world interacting with each other.

Now the real dangers are well known and prominent in the show's overarching plot, while the Crystal Gem episodes and the townie episodes feel like two separate worlds. The townie episodes rarely have any magic involved in them anymore, which makes them feel less like a rest between important events and more like a distraction from them.

The latest Stevenbomb brought back some of this, with episodes that overtly focused on the townsfolk and their problems while also hinting at what's really going on, which is part of why they worked so well. Another part is that they wrote the townies better.

I actually liked the way the Cluster arc was resolved. It relied on several elements which were introduced previously in the show, which all came together in an unexpected but perfectly logical way. You could say it was rushed, but it's not a deus ex machina, everything necessary to happen was already established in previous episodes.

It's also fitting for Steven's character; it looks like he's up against a threat that he absolutely has to destroy for the sake of the entire planet, but by thinking carefully about what it is and why it's doing what it does, he's able to find a nonviolent solution that saves both the Cluster and the Earth. Some people would have preferred for Steven to be disillusioned from his innocent worldview and learn that there are some threats that just can't be reasoned with and have to be dealt with decisively, but that was handled better in later arcs; it doesn't work if the "idealistic" solution is actually more practical than the cynical one.

That episode was another harsh reminder to me how I wasn't doing so well mentally lately. Fortunately I've working on that shortly after and I finally feel like I'm doing a bit better again.

This episode helped me realize and if fiction could help me out like that (not forgetting to give credits to some people irl who also helped me to come to terms) than I believe in its high quality. I now also realize I'm a bit like Sapphire...unfortunately this realisation doesn't give me any freezing or future vision powers.
