Worst episode yet, shit was fucking embarrassingly bad.

Even ignoring the awful fucking romance (I'm not against Jack finding a love interest but this is shit) the plotting is ass. There's nothing clever in the writing, Jack doesn't do anything interesting to arm the weapon, they just push on it until it magically works...it's like Ashi punching the army to death, they could have her do something clever, but instead they had her do the simplest and stupidest thing possible.

I don't think anything outside of Jump Good, the first episodes and the Birth of Evil had any overall consequences.
Granted, there was the episode with the Aku Flu where Jack sees all the people he saved in the past, but those episodes could have been completely different and it wouldn't have changed a thing about that moment or anything leading up to it.

See, I don't see episodic stories as "filler", just self-contained stories. And if an episode has a single complete arc as well as progressing the characters, that's the best of both worlds. I enjoyed the original series with its various tales of Jack traversing the world, but frankly, i'm glad Genndy has taken the approach he's chosen for season 5. He's made the consequences of one episode matter to the next, but hasn't lost sight of making each episode feel distinct and unique, rather than taking the, say, Jessica Jones or Luke Cage Netflix series approach where everything is kind of just one big story cut into chunks. I wouldn't have wanted Samurai Jack to become that.

So fuck the haters, I liked episode 8, I liked seeing Jack facing a monster of the week with someone at his side, which is relatively rare, I liked the kiss, and I'm excited for the final 2 episodes.

Deserve? Yes. I wonder if that would make the bast story though. I'm kind of unsure on the way I want this to go from here. If we get to the point of Jack needing to decide whether to go back or stay in the future with Ashi, that will probably be shit, because it would solidify her as an obstacle to his mission. So far she actually hasn't been that, she's aided him regaining his fighting spirit and willingness to actually seek a victory against Aku, so here's hoping. In truth though, there's a chance based on the episode descriptions that she will die in the next episode, leaving jack to face Aku without her.

Yup. Almost everyone unanimously agree that 1-3 are the best episodes. Even stylistically, the pyramid fight scenes and the snowfield fight scenes were gorgeous. Great choreography too. The fights after that left a lot to be desired. And episodes where it's Ashi-centric fell off in quality even more. Which makes sense, since it's hard to cram an entire romantic interest arc in a 10-episode season.

Since episode 9 is Guardian and episode 10 is presumably Aku, those episodes might bring the whole season back up.

Honestly, the thing I found funniest was Jacks reaction to Ashi's nudity. He seemed like he was about to go into a treatise on why you can't see that kind of thing before you're married, but ultimately it was good to see him admit his feelings to himself and go for it in the end.

But what I mean is, even with the quality dropoff, (which mostly I think has to do with the decrease in stylistic iconic Samurai jack style fighting with the split screen, dramatic poses and music setting the stage, and the pacing problems more than Ashi) the series is still in the high end, with plenty of people giving it perfect scores. True. Personally, looking beyond Ashi, and comparing the early to late episodes, it kind of looks like they spent a good bit of their really original creativity right off the bat with The emoji dogs and Scaramouche. The concept of Ashi and her sisters is relatively creative too, given the burnt-skin-and-ash "outfit". Haven't seen that one before, so props to Genndy on that. Otherwise, there's been a bit of rehashing. Jack goes through a giant creature again. Jack deals with a group of mind controlled kids he can't hurt again. Come to think of it, I can't remember the equivalent of the Lazarus monster in the original run, but similar concepts have been done elsewhere.

What I'm confused about now is what the point of Scaramouche surviving was. If he does end up delivering the news to Aku, it's not going to be right after Jack gets the sword, it's going to be incredibly outdated information. I'd think that Aku could just spy on Jack, and see that he's still using his sword.

To be fair to Gendy, those repeats serve a purpose - being in a giant critter's gut is a good way to show us just how routine this has all become for Jack, and to contrast just how out of Ashi's league he is, in terms of experience in danger. The mind-controlled kids mostly serve to let the Dominator gloat over what a softie Jack is while infuriating Ashi and REALLY driving home just how fucked-up Aku's regime is.

The closest thing I can think of to leechy boy is Durge from Genndy's Clone Wars series, who had a similar penchant for terrifying strength, regrowth, and eating victims alive. Our new pal seems to actually turn people into more leeches, or at least mimic their shapes, judging by the myriad alien forms he takes at the end and the absence of all crew and prisoners in the ship.

I'm guessing Scaramouche will either be one last brick joke - playing into his name, he's a clown - or he'll be the reason Aku looks back in on Jack and notices he's got a new weak spot in Ashi.

I think Jack and Ashi needed a bit more subtlety, them fucking at the end would've been funnier if when they were on that bus with green cats didn't accentuate every little detail of them wanting to fuck each other. Like, have these moments intact, just less words and make it kind of awkward to keep viewer oblivious.

Also, it's just me, but I think when Ashi was naked she should've said like

Overall, I loved the episode, the alien they were fighting was cool and fights they had were cool. My favorite little touch is how Jack used scabbard of his sword to fend off too.
