It's over.

Well it's good to know that it seems the dissolution of the deal had a lot more to do with Archie, and not Sega just being unwilling to deal. Makes me a little more hopeful that some other publisher might pick up the series, although I get the feeling that if they do, Sega will mandate a fresh start with more restrictions.

Whatever, I really just want Mega Drive.

Flynn was part of the reason the book got cancelled. Why bring in the creative team that sank the ship in the first place?

And Sega likely won't let any new licensee use any of the Archie/SatAM OCs. They've wanted those characters eliminated for a long time. And any new publisher will want to start over fresh with their own ideas, anyway.

I didn't say it would be good. But the movie will bring Sonic to public eye and will temporally boost his fame. Until the movie comes out and it's as shit as Smurfs or Bay Turtles or Chronicle Rangers. It will be popular to make enough money for a sequel and then the sequel will bomb.
>>
>>92180606
Archie has done a lot of great things recently. Afterlife, Chilling adventures, the Archie and Jughead reboots. Sanic was the weak link storywise, but the safe bet in terms of money, mostly because of the loyal fanbase.
>>
>>92180668
Truly.
>>
>>92179937
>If they can bring Flynn and the Archie cast with them

Flynn gets not work for any other publisher outside of a couple of back-up strips in the Nickelodeon TMNT tie-in comic that just got cancelled.

The guy isn't a good writer and I can't see any publisher being in a hurry to hire, especially to continue on with the book he was writing that JUST GOT CANCELLED.
>>
>>92180414
Live action & CGI actually. Granted, the fact Sony's making makes it DOA anyways.

But yeah, I do disagree with the idea that Sonic is irrelevant nowadays. He may not be as popular as he used to be, but people still know the Sonic series.

>>92180752
It's not like the book possibly being cancelled is his fault.
>>
Isn't Flynn already on Jughead?
>>
>>92180797
>It's not like the book possibly being cancelled is his fault.

Ah yes, the creative team behind a book that sold poorly and could no longer justify licensing expenses are totally without blame. Right.

If Flynn was a good writer, then the book would have sold enough units to warrant Archie spending additional funds to keep the license. Flynn didn't write a goof enough book so Archie isn't going to spend the dough to keep it around.

Flynn's as much to blame for the cancellation as everybody else.

>>
>>92180889

Its certainly not because, ya know, Archie put it on a long hiatus last year, and when it started again many LCS's declined to order it again.
>>
>>92180845
Yeah.
>>
>>92180925

It's several compounding factors.

>Multiple lawsuits (big one)
>Jacked up licensing fees (another big one)
>Declining sales
>Stagnating creative team who have been on the title WAY too long

Flynn isn't the biggest culprit behind the end of the book, but he isn't blameless. Honestly, his work hadn't gotten bad, just bland. He was running on steam for over a year.

Sometimes, creative teams need to be removed from their books when they've overstayed their welcome, run out of ideas and are clearly just clinging to the book for a steady paycheck.

>It's not like that idea hasn't been pure liquid shit everytime it's been tried or anything

Shit, yes.

But the live-action Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks movies have made ungodly amounts of money, and that's what the studios care about.

So a shitty Sonic movie where he "goes through a portal and winds up in New York City" or something isn't as important as a Sonic movie that makes tons of money.

I grew up collecting the comics in the 90s. I kinda stopped around 2010 but I'm actually sad to see them go. I had a lot of fun memories with my sister as we read the comic out-loud in funny voices and laughed, reading them in the grocery while I waited for my parents to finish shopping, or going to the local comic store with friends to buy new issues. It's like a door to part of my childhood is closing for good.

Honestly, why is Archie still around? I said it before, but really only thing anyone cared for are their licences, and with Sonic gone, it's only a matter of time Before Capcom comes and scoops Mega Man away, assuming they haven't done that already.

Then what are they left with? A series that gets shitty spinoffs, shameless crossovers with horror franchises and a crappy CW drama. Arch and pals can't keep the company afloat forever now that the Hedgehog's gone.
>>
>>92184780
Theres no way they still have Mega Man at this point.

And sadly, Arch and pals kept them afloat for decades. Barring a sudden massive backlash against them or Riverdale suddenly bombing, they'll probably still be fine.

Editorial and Archie Comics being run by retards is more to blame than Flynn.

Editorial was run by an idiot when spent a shit ton of money licensing other Sega/Capcom characters for one-off usage for a Sega/Capcom crossover that most people hated and basically killed momentum in the Sonic books for like three-four months. Oh and the editor in question, when he saw the fact that he had fucked the company over with his bullshit quit right before the crossover started, so he would not get the blame for the hell it would cause fall-out wise.

Archie also went on a suicidal move to kill the mainline Archie books so they could do a reboot with a bunch of big name talent and cash grab to circumvent the direct market and get even more favorable placement of the reboot books in Wal Mart and other mainstream stores. Which nearly bankrupted the company and made them even more hated when they tried to use Kickstarter to get fans to bail their asses out over their poor decisions and they had to kill the Kickstarter campaign due to the backlash from everyone

Most likely. I feel real bad for everyone working on the comic. The artists, writers, etc. was probably living the working on an official piece of Sonic media (since most of them are Sonic fans), only to be put out of work because of a ton of bullshit that wasn't even their fault. It's not likely, but I hope SEGA gives the license to someone else & brings those people on board.

If you aren't turning out 30+ titles a month this is actually a reasonable amount of required office space (esp. if you're no longer warehousing your product onsite). As I said Marvel and DC both occupied one floor respectively of their office buildings until the boom of the 80s. Most comics professionals are freelancers working out of their own homes/studios which increasingly leaves sales, editorial and administrative staff as the only people critically required onsite, esp. with production going digital.

It can get very confusing with the shit-tonne of multiple stories, lore, and characters going on all at once. IDW currently have 3 Transformers titles running and 2 with TF bots being borrowed. (Skywarp with G.I. Joe)

'Lost Light' with Rodimus and Megatron trying to be a good guy. 'Optimus Prime' annexing earth and seems to be getting a little dark himself, and 'Till All Are One' where Starscream is the new ruler of Cybertron. If you do get interested but get confused, just ask around.

Out of the status quo. He's either Megatron's underling or a rogue.

IDW takes him and gives him his dream, which is pretty much the most interesting thing that's happened to him in all his multiverse versions.

Also noteworthy, same thing for Thundercracker who pretty much had no character other than being super serious Starscream in any other universe now given character development as a...NAIL of sorts.

Archie does seem to be bleeding money. >>
Sonic the comic was better
>>
>>92179692
I don't know why you people convince yourself of this. It will NEVER EVER HAPPEN.

You need to understand that Sega hates the Sonic franchise. HATE it. Sonic isn't super popular in Japan, and Sega only cares about Japan. And for the last decade Sega has been systematically removing every character and ounce of plot from the Sonic games. A comic book, with characters and dialogue, goes against everything Sega wants the franchise to be.

Let me repeat: after Archie, there will NEVER EVER be another Sonic comic. EVER.

Consensus on SEGA's fuck ups puts the blame mostly on the Japanese head branch being unable to organize shit and being resentful of the success of the American one. That's pretty much what happened in 90s with Tom Kalinske when he was still CEO of Sega of America.

He was called in for a meeting with Sega of Japan's CEOs concerning the launch of Sega Mega Drive/Genesis on the western market. He proposed a very aggressive marketing campaign to compete against Nintendo, and while SoJ wanted to bundle Altered Beast with Genesis for the western market launch, he proposed they bundle Sonic The Hedgehog instead. While they were skeptical about it, they followed his advice, and as a result, Genesis' launch was a huge success, colliding head-on with SNES on the market and proving itself as a worthy competitor.

But do you think SoJ's CEOs were thankful for Kalinske's input? Big fat -nope-. Instead, they got butthurt that some "uppity foreigner" upstaged them and they proceeded to ignore any further input from him, while antagonizing him in a passive-agressive manner by basically stripping him of any executive power. It reached it's climax when they basically dropped Sega Saturn on his lap and went "you figure out what to do with it. Oh yeah, and we'll be launching it sooner than scheduled." He was literally forced to resign from the company.

Though to be honest, Sega's owner later offered him to come working for his other company.

In short, yes, there always seemed to be some bitter resentment which caused Sega of Japan to make some pretty retarded decisions.

This reads like fanfiction, like the other debunked "Lisa" leak.

Archie had already bought the license for the comic, and would retain it regardless of any potential price increase until the next time they had to renew their contract.

Archie also had several fully completed comic books ready to be shipped that were prevented from being sold by an outside injunction.

The idea that Archie would just drop the book voluntarily without ending it with a big sales final issue is laughable, doubly so since both Sonic Universe and Sonic the Hedgehog were close to huge milestones.

That is retarded and anyone who believes this isn't pulled from thin air is retarded.

What you have to understand is that this isn't unique to Sega of Japan, it is part of the Japanese corporate culture.

In Japan, it is illegal for foreign companies to buy Japanese companies, even if the Japanese companies are failing. You either merge with another Japanese company or you die.

In Japan, the distrust and repulsion of foreign companies and markets is built into the foundation of their corporate culture; they would sooner go bankrupt and dissolve than let a foreigner company save them financially.

So no, things are not going to suddenly turn around for Sega. They aren't unique in Japan. It is better to go bankrupt than to cooperate or compromise with gaijin.

From what I've read online, there were a couple good shorter arcs, like Fighters, but still a whole lot of wheel-spinning on stuff like the Werehog that absolutely positively were not progressing for years at a time. I don't feel like I've missed anything by quitting.

>From what I've read online, there were a couple good shorter arcs, like Fighters, but still a whole lot of wheel-spinning on stuff like the Werehog that absolutely positively were not progressing for years at a time. I don't feel like I've missed anything by quitting.

Ian is a good writer when he's working in short bursts, but he's never been good at plotting long form stories.

Remember even before the Pendering how long and go-nowhere the whole Death Egg and Mecha Sally things were? They just kept going for years with no development in sight.

It's one of the only aspects I can agree on regarding the claims that Ian is a bad writer. He's been on the book for, like, a fuckin DECADE at this point, and he has never improved in his ability to plot long form story arcs. Most writers would develop after that many years of practice, but not Ian. Never Ian.

Add every 25th issue being a "milestone" there. That fucking BEGS for filler. Considering the big plans that were there, it all could be condensed and put its place instead.
Jubilees should be about celebrating, not about big resolutions.
>>
>>92196182
Remember when Archie announced there would be that Sonic Underground epilogue for Sonic Universe #50 milestone issue, but then it never happened and I'm not sure if they ever even explained their reason? Remember when the cover previews showed Julie-Su appearing in "Endangered Species" and Saffron was supposed to play a role as well, but then they had to be awkwardly written out? Remember how obvious it was that the Penders lawsuit forced Archie to edit out a bunch of characters, scrap the resolutions of their subplots, and hastily edit something different in their place? Remember that time when Mega Man abruptly ended with an issue consisting of comic sneak peeks that would never come to be?

Archie have already had lots of art and writing scrapped because of stupid editorial blunders. If they've done it again, it wouldn't be anything new for that company.

>>92197116
I'm not sure what's with the rush to get the Mecha Sally arc or Sonic Unleashed done. I felt entertained by the subplots and storyarcs that were going on during them, so I didn't feel like they must end fast. The only reason why that would've been beneficial is the hindsight knowledge we have about The Pendering and other unfortunate obstacles popping up to interfere with the comic. If the stories had reached their conclusions faster, we would've gotten some closure instead of just "oops, looks like we're not allowed to get a proper ending anymore".

>Remember when Archie announced there would be that Sonic Underground epilogue for Sonic Universe #50 milestone issue, but then it never happened and I'm not sure if they ever even explained their reason?
IIRC, Ian Flynn said on his (now defunct) forum that, just after they announced that issue, a change in their contract with Sega barred them from using elements of Underground (along with other things like Knuckles's OVA hat), probably in an effort to bury the past media they're embarrassed by. So they had to scrap it and put together that Metal Sonic story, which you can tell was rushed out because it didn't reach the full page length, so they had to fill the rest of the pages with a reprint of Sonic vs Metal Sonic from Sonic #25.
>>
>>92199322
>which you can tell was rushed out because it didn't reach the full page length, so they had to fill the rest of the pages with a reprint of Sonic vs Metal Sonic from Sonic #25
It was actually 24 pages which was a few pages longer than a normal issue. The reprint was just included because it was a milestone. Sonic #250 did the same thing a few months later.

Scourge wasn't a bad character though. If you ignore the fact that his origin is as Sonic's evil twin from the goatee dimension, he was fun.

He was basically a totally different character from Penders' boring Star Trek ripoff anyways. Ian started his run in the middle of Penders jerking off about evil twins so he had to do SOMETHING with it. What he did was to basically cut the rope and change the stupid evil twin into a totally different character.

Honestly, the worst thing about the reboot besides the stupidity of that first arc was that it WASN'T a fresh jumping on point.

Because they just replaced 20 years of comic back story with 20 years of game back story, leaving it almost exactly as impenetrable as it was before the reboot.

Just replace editor's notes that say "For more about Lien-Da, see Knuckles and the Dark Legion #3" with notes that say "For more about Wendy Witchcart, play this obscure two decade-old Game Gear game that was never released outside of Japan".

Incompetence at every level.

Because it's a story that didn't get finished, unlike the recent Universe arc and the Unleashed arc? People also waited MONTHS for it, so getting cancelled right at release stings.

>Evidently the arc that started over and showed the early years of the reboot universe was the biggest loss in the cancellation.
Well yeah, unlike everything else there's absolutely no closure there.

>Maybe they shoulda started there instead of the incompetent, meandering garbage they went with.
Mega Drive only exists because they got permission from Sega to use Classic for the 25th anni. They couldn't do that. Even then, a goofy filler story set ~five or six games in would have sent the wrong message. The way Ian handled it was poor, but your idea is worse simply because it wasn't even an option.

that anon has no idea what he's talking about. the comic is most definitely cancelled, at least for now. things are a little more complicated as in, archie has given the dead signal to retailers but the license is still up in the air. they haven't lost it but aren't exactly allowed to put out new content unless they either renew it or someone swoops in to take it. considering how long it's been, it's obvious no other comic company wants this hot potato. so yes, it's cancelled but this isn't news and everything we know now we've basically known for the past few months

Sonic Underground wasn't a change in contract. It was SEGA just getting cold feet and not approving it.

None of this has to do with Archie willfully hurting themselves, being forced to scrap content for legal reasons.

Kind of sad about this, not gonna lie. I mean I haven't really read the comic in a few years but I was a huge fan of it as a kid and it's still probably the comic I own the most physical copies of.

Sad to see it go, but on the other hand it's also had so much executive meddling in the last few years, with constant story arc interruptions and the like, that I'm really not surprised it was losing sales. Stuff like the Mega Man crossover and Genesis interrupting things every ten issues are why I stopped caring.

I'll miss it though. Good memories.

Ah well. At least Sonic might get a new lease on life.
>>
>>92207592

Honestly, if the book had featured a better writer it might not be suffering such a fate.

But this is what happens when you keep the lowest bidder on staff for 10+ years. Decay.

The Riverdale books didn't start to succeed again until Archie fired all the writers who had been causing the book to stagnate for a decade and piped in upper level talent like Waid and Zdarsky.

If they'd done that with Sonic it probably wouldn't be in the mess, at least selling enough units to justify the licensing costs. But who the fuck wants to write for Sonic the Hedgehog that isn't autist-tier like Ian Flynn? No one.

I think he lost his touch in the last few years, but given that the factors that contributed to this were all completely out of his hands, I don't think better writing would've helped. The Penders thing just snowballed into a lot of other problems, including having to reset the comic's continuity and try to keep the same longtime readers while having to start a new continuity from scratch.
>>
>>92207861

It's true, though, Whito Knighto-san.

The Riverdale books were struggling, so Archie hired superior talent to save them. Now the books sell much better and have avoided cancellation.

If they'd done that for Sonic, he'd have made enough money to be worth saving on a financial level.

But they didn't and here we are. You can't protect Precious Ian forever.
>>
>>92207766
>>92207889

Honestly, the Pendering would have been the time to ditch Ian, bring in some new blood and start over with a fresh #1 to maximize sales and interest with a legit jumping on point.

But instead Archie kept the numbering, kept the creative team that continued to write "business as usual" and half-assed a "reboot" that had just as much confusing back story as the old universe.

They fucked up their chance and they won't be getting another.

I'm assuming that the old issues of the Sonic comics are going to up to insane prices now.

Thats the beauty of it. For whatever reason, the Sonicfags and Br--um, the fans of that show hate each other with a passion. They'll destroy each other.

Oh, there were some real stinkers doing art duties over the years... I remember somebody did a collage of every artist's take on Sonic (and maybe Sally?) but damned if I can find it.

Then start a new thread cause this one is done.

Barging in, I want no SatAM at all and he isn't that good of a writer. The ones you talk of reside on DA anyway.

I've got it at home, won't have access to it for 3 hours. I'll post in a new thread if one comes up by then.

There are more possibilities than just IDW. There's Boom, DC, Dynamite, Dark Horse there could also never be another sonic comic

Did that issue where Rouge kisses Shadow come out yet?

Heh. Maybe thats why its cancelled. They broke the "no romance" rule.
>>
>>92208600
but then other fandoms get caught up in the fight cause fans of the horse show have invade many other shows, games, and other series, and sonic itself has official connections to other games at the very least and thats enough alone to let the fight to spread

They need something to replace the giant Star Wars-shaped hole that Disney yanked out of them.

Marvel is kind of expected; Mars Attacks, funny but not unthinkable; but The X-Files? That's fucking shameless, IDW.

He isn't talking about this thread, friend. He's talking about The Ride.

I'm sure Dark Horse is probably slavering for something, anything, after the loss of Star Wasr

It's not Flynn's fault that he had to keep interrupting the story for things like the crossovers and old game adaptations. It was people above him demanding that.

It's true to a certain extent, but it only works in the short term. Writing is supremely important to a comic's longevity.

He's not that great. He's better than Penders, but things like Silver thinking Rotor is the traitor because he used to go by the name Boomer keep him from being that good. He worked with shit and made it passable, but then there's stupid things he does all by himself.

They should've gone with this when they redesigned her. Made her look more like a robot in general.

That reboot was the epitome of wasted potential.

I'll never stop being angry that the forced reboot took vest-n-boots Sally away from us. I notice everyone who praised the new design in the least either A)hated Sally/SatAM, or B)didn't like any of the SatAM characters, and didn't want them in the comic.

>>92208346
All that's still better than being a salty fuck desu. I'm coming out ahead.

The redesign was the best thing that happened to her, SatAM furfag.
