All I remember is they started showing less of Flash and started focusing on Gwen and Harry (this was during his time as the Green Goblin) and then a change of writers suddenly reintroduces Flash. If I was to pinpoint a specific time when they started being more friendly its when Flash got back from Vietnam and Peter moved in with him. Flash never hated Peter, he just sorta took advantage of him being a nerdy outcast to make him look cooler & cement him as the BMOC. When Peter was trying to lure the Big Man into a trap by boasting he'd figured out hs secret ID Flash privately pulled him aside & said "dude you are gonna get yourself killed...stop it!" & even Peter was kind of aghast at that.
Ditko & Lee's run was peppered with pretty good side character quirks I never expected when I read them. You learn Jameson isn't as much a prick as he always seems. Liz Allen grows up faster than all the kids at the school. Sandman wants a high school diploma (and the principle is ready to fucking die before he gives him one). I dunno if you'd call all of that 'good' writing but its entertaining as hell...

Peter Parker is actually a total dick, always has been.
He bullies his supervillains in rather petty ways, he even bullies some of his supporting cast, he whines about little problems in an otherwise blessed life, he doesn't value the women who love him, and let's not forget that he let Uncle Ben's eventual killer escape easy capture because he wanted someone who caught him cheating to be the victim of a crime as petty payback.
