I'm going to guess that Aku realizes that Ashi is the one thing that's keeping Jack somewhat happy at this point, and decides he has to kill her, being the overall dick he is.
Maybe Jack knows of this somehow, and has to keep Ashi hidden from Aku, or split up as not to endanger her any more.
Given Jack's look of shock at the end of the S5E9 promo clip, I'm guessing that the portal is gone, or the guardian is dead... or both.

Jack steps halfway through the portal after defeating the guardian, and realizes that killing Aku in the past would erase Ashi forever, and steps back out to fight Aku in the present, rationalizing that it would still avenge those who died in the past.
Possibly re-entering the past allows him to age again. Of course all this would be an easy shortcut in the plot, but we only have two episodes left to conclude a whole series.

We aren't sure what the caveats of time travel are, Jack, for example isn't aging. It would rewrite history and effectively kill every character in the show (The characters reaffirmed in episode 6 s5). Ashi going back with him to change the future that created her might make her disappear.

Honestly people who are upset about this forgot just how episodic seasons 1-4 are and how literally anything could happen episode to episode. Sure episodes 1-3 of season 5 show us what a fully realized samurai jack movie could have been like, but I'm happier having the best of both worlds with jack transitioning from punished movie jack back to his old self from seasons 1-4. It works on multiple levels. He has to get 'back to the past' to complete his quest and save the world, but season 5 was also about him getting back to the past in the sense of the show returning to the way it was in the original run, (and Genndy returning back to the past of his childhood to the original inspiration of the show).If episodes 9 and 10 conclude the series well then I'll consider season 5 an absolute success.
