You could've kept the Supergirl adventures canon while Superman and PG THOUGHT she was his cousin while 'discovering' the Atlantean origin was true all along (as they tried to do on PG in the initial post-Crisis era). And she thus could've had a Dick Grayson-style career of going from (kinda-)sidekick to independent hero within a mentor hero's family.

Incredibly convoluted backstory involving multiple editorial retcons that have somehow actually been built into her character.

Also, her entire home universe is kill. Which causes her to be a perennial outsider, no matter how friendly everyone is.

As a result there's a kind of inherent loneliness to her character that I think resonates well with a lot of readers.

I would hardly describe the Palmiotti run as a comedy book. In fact that's pretty much completely wrong. It was a more lighthearted slice of life. And her other "runs" are basically non-existent, aside from the awful Nu52 thing with her and Huntress. But then again Nu52 was pretty much shit in general.
